This year’s conferences and those coming up next year play a big

Another enjoyable day for us was Saturday’s Summer Fair with fun

for everyone. We have just completed our final assembly for this

year and it was wonderful to see the great effort put in by Year 3

and year 4. Putting on an assembly not only gives a class the

chance to showcase the activities and learning taking place in their

c classroom but is a visible lesson to the whole school of the IB

Learner’s Profile in Collaboration, Risk Takers and Caring.

Greetings to our Parents and families,

Where has this school Year gone? In our classroom we have

recently been busily preparing for our assembly, which was held

on Monday the 17th of June.

In our assembly, we show-cased our

reading, writing and musical talents. We

hope some of you got to see and to hear

our awesome stories, singing and dancing.

We all contributed in creating a big yellow

school bus and we drew our faces to go in

the window. We used this as a back drop for

our assembly items. It looked great!

Ms Lily, the children and I. would like to take this opportunity to

thank you all for supporting us over the year. It has been an

absolute pleasure to teach such wonderful kids, and I will miss

them all very much when I head back to New Zealand in a few

weeks.

What’s Happening with Year 3 and 4

Welcome back from the Dragon Boat Festival! Hope everyone has had a good break and ready for our last stretch of learning before the summer break. Over the next few weeks, Year 3 and 4 will be undergoing assessments in all areas of the curriculum to see how much progress the students have made during the year. Students have made significant achievements in reading, writing and mathematics. All the children have enjoyed the specialist classes and the learning that has been made is commendable by those specialist teachers. This has being shown in our class with the visual presentation skills in relation to art; the increased motor skills and teamwork that has been developed through PE; the development of spoken Mandarin and cultural enrichment with Chinese. Music and ICT has also played a great part in developing technological skills and the appreciation of Music. I am always struck by how children can learn in such a short time, once they have mastered a concept and I am looking forward to seeing the end product of one year’s hard work, great effort and determination from all the students. 端午假期之后,我们已进入这学年的最后一段。在剩下的

Participation with the Local

Chinese Department Some of our students took part in a fashion show with the local Chinese Department. It was an auspicious occasion with local government attending. Rebecca, Elliot, Helmi and Jude should be commended for their patience and participation. All were very tired and hungry from waiting around, but they still managed to put on a good show. 国际儿童节之前,国内部组织了隆重的庆

Sharing of News/Poetry Recital This is always received with a lot of intrigue and interest from the students. It develops good oral presentation and questioning skills. Helmi’s book on different sports activities evoked lots of discussion. It has also been wonderful to see the increase in confidence of Bella and Isabella, our two new students, when sharing their news. Our weekly poetry recital, where children choose their own poems each Friday is also developing good oral and presentation skills, enjoyed by all the students and is increasing confidence. 学生们总是跟我聊起很多有趣的事。这个一个很好的方式,既

Football Competition with the

Local Chinese Department Some of our students took part in a friendly football match with the local department; it proved to be a fun event. Thanks to our PE Teacher, Lisa Grimm, a competitive edge was shown by both teams and good sportsmanship. 我们的一些学生与国内部的学生踢了一场友谊赛。

As a teacher at this time of the year, one of the things I most enjoy about teaching is looking back over the past year with my students individually and getting the children to assess and evaluate just how far they have come, in terms of learning and personal growth. The expressions on most of my students faces are both memorable and touching, when they too realise what they have achieved; how far they have grown in confidence and have become good citizens. Our classroom is a community and Year 3 and 4 have shown all the traits of the IB learner profile and more. Co-operation, respect and a caring attitude are part of our class culture. I am very fortunate as a teacher that my students fully enjoy learning and are constantly seeking to absorb more about their world. UNIT OF INQUIRY

Over the past few weeks, Year Five and Six have embarked on two big projects. The first is one related to our Unit Of Inquiry (UOI) which is centred around the challenges, risks, and opportunities that children around the world

face. 在过去的几周内,5/6年级已经完成了两大题

We looked into a few examples from Russia, USA, Cambodia and various countries in Africa. Students compared the challenges, risks, and opportunities that those children face, to those that they personally face. They almost immediately started devising a plan to help a chosen charity and settled on fundraising for a monetary donation.

Due to the personal connection that Elin (and certainly the rest of the class as well) feels with India, we chose the orphanage that Eric came from. The students made candles, organised games and prizes, made skoobies and twisted their parents’ arms to bake for them! We sold these items at a mini fair and

made a whopping 2000 RMB!! 由于Elin及班上其他的

LITERACY

Our second big project is the compilation of a newspaper for Literacy. Students practiced writing an article, before interviewing via Skype a reporter in America about what it is like to work for a newspaper

and what the requirements for articles are. 我们的第二个大项目是识字报纸上的汇编。学生练写了一篇文

We then brainstormed the general topics found in newspapers, before deciding on specific article ideas. Each student was required to choose two articles to write for their English Literacy assessment. They

were then given the freedom to choose minor tasks or writing in their mother tongue. 然后,我们集思广

MATHEMATICS

In Mathematics, we have worked extensively on fractions, looking initially at proper- and improper fractions, along with mixed numbers. Students have played games related to equivalent fractions and explored addition of mixed numbers, using their multiplication and division skills.

OUTING TO LISHAN

We went on an unexpected adventure when we took

to the Lishan mountain on Thursday 13 June! 我们去

Once we had taken the cable car up the mountain, the search for a place to sit and paint a scene from nature began. Thank goodness for Ms Fiona, who asked where there might be a nice place to sit. She was told that we could walk “ten minutes” up the

Xhis had acquired more book resources for literacy, teaching and for

the library in general. We are expanding our resources to fill the

needs of our students. A widely range of reading materials was been

donated recently by the Local Department during the Children’s day

showing the good relationship between our department and theirs.

西安高新国际学校的图书馆有很多关于文学及教学的图书。我们试

图增加这些资源。儿童节当天国内部向我们捐助了很多各种各样内容广泛的图书,显示了我们与国

内部良好的关系。

For the next school year, the Xhis library will have a big change. We will start using our new

in-house Library system where students and guests can check the availability of

our library resource books and for easy check-in and check-out. Library cards

will be imposed when borrowing books and there will be a new drop box system.

Specifically labelled shelves will be seen also for easy access and students will

be trained more on how to use the library. We will also inform everyone about

the Library House rules and update all activities that the library will have for

every month. It will be an exciting new school year with a lot of activities and

more to learn each month.

明年图书馆会有一个很大的变动。我们将开始启用新的图书馆管理系统,学生们及

其它人可以很容易查到他们所需要的图书,并享受便捷的借还书制度。我们会教大家如何使用这种

新图书馆管理系统。每个月我们都会安排各类相关活动,以促进大家学习的积极性。

About an hour (and a thousand stairs) later we reached the pavilion, exhausted! Although there wasn’t much access to nature, the class managed to paint beautiful water colour

scenes from the top of the pavilion. 一千楼梯)大约一个小时

After a total of about 3000 stairs, we can say that we learnt a great deal about stamina and the Chinese translation for “ten

Thank you to all the Student, Teachers and Parents who helped and supported

the Library. Most especially to Mrs. Schultz for helping us since they started in

the school. Thank you also to all who assisted me in encoding books into the

We have finished our lesson with PYP and MYP will be finishing off their

activities this week. MYP 7 is doing Music mapping to determine the

migration of music and its influence from one country to another, while

year 8 made a video commercial about environment to understand the

impact of music on an audience or listener, as well they are comparing the

differences with their previous project radio commercial. Year 10-11 had their final assessment on

music composition and arrangement with the use of poetic lyrics; and family chords with the use of

different instruments focusing on Rhythm, Harmony and Melody.

For the next School year, Music will use a revised

curriculum which will enhance the student’s ability and

musical understanding. New enthusiastic units will be developing with in the IB framework to allow

for more exciting activities and games.

IB的课程框架,但会更有趣,因为我们增加了更多的活动

Thank you to all Parents and co-teachers in supporting

me and my students with all of our projects and activities

Y5-6 – During these weeks, students have discussed that all

living things offer explanations about the world around us.

Students have made some posters to show what they have learnt

in last unit. We also had a role play as the dragon boat festival

coming. We are going to learn what challenges, risks and chances

worldwide children have in this unit. Students will do some

research to see what difficulties children have in different

counties.

Y1-4 During these weeks, students have

earned the vocabulary about transport. We learn how to writ

e the character and Pin Yin in order .Then we will continue

to learn the activity about transport and other useful words

in daily life.

Nursery/Reception-For these weeks, we have been learning about the animals. We learned some songsand Pinyin about animals.

At the same time, we made crafts and read stories about animal’s .We also obsdrved golden fish, turtle and

parrot’s growth and activities and discussed t

he problems happening in their life.

We had a fantastic year of learning together in EAL

class. As we approach the end of another wonderful

year at XHIS, I would like to thank my parents for

all their support and contributions. I couldn’t have

done it without you. A big thank you to my students.

You brought my classroom to life, made learning

fun, but more importantly you have grown

academically and developed as life-long learners.

I am proud of the work you have done this year,

Steven, Aino, Jacob and Louis.

I wish for you all great success in your academic

future.

What Every Parent of a Primary School Child Needs to Know

Did you know your child may be a victim of summer reading loss? Students

can lose up to three months’ worth of reading progress over one summer

holiday period.

Make Summer Reading Fun!

Summer reading is different from reading during the school year. It should be less structured and much more informal. Summer reading should emphasize:

Student interest to keep students motivated to read.

Wide-reading to help students learn the meanings of new words

Scheduling time for reading on a daily basis throughout the summer helps support your child’s reading development. Make reading a priority this summer for yourself and your child.

Read to your child daily

Read a lot of different materials

Discuss what you have read together

Ask questions as you read

Encourage your child to write or draw a picture about what you have read. Happy Reading!

SPORTS DAY

My first thought in the morning: “Is it raining?” But luckily

it wasn’t. We got a beautiful sunny Sports Day, with a lot

of good results and smiling faces.

The students competed in running short distance, long

jump, throwing, shot put, high jump and relay race. There

were also some funny games for the whole school to take

part in together. Those games included sack race, clothing

race, spoon race, three leg race and beanbag toss. The

parents tried very hard to beat their kids in Tug of War,

but the PYP students were too strong and won. They beat

the staff as well, unfortunately…

Even though we are a small school we have a lot of great

athletes. But most important, we support each other and

are happy for other people’s success. If you try your best

you have succeeded!
