Solar Energy — It’s Clean, It’s Green and Best of All — It’s Free

Today’s solar energy technologies are simple, compact and efficient. Current photovoltaic (PV) systems are state-of-the-art, constructed of silicon cells that function as semiconductors and convert light directly into electricity.

Solar energy will cut or eliminate your electric bills while providing a hedge against future electricity price increases. Solar energy reduces dependence on foreign oil and conserves valuable natural resources while preventing greenhouse gas production.

Sunlight falls on high capacity solar panels during daylight hours. The solar panels convert the sun’s energy into Direct Current (DC) electricity which is sent to an inverter.

The inverter converts the Direct Current into Alternating Current

(AC) electricity. This is sometimes called “conditioning” the power.

Net Metering

California’s net metering law allows residential and business users to sell their extra electricity back to the grid (PG&E) at retail prices during the day and draw from the grid during the night. During the day, the electric meter spins backwards as it registers excess energy. At night the electric meter spins forward as it returns electricity from the grid into the customer’s home or business.

Time of Use metering gives you the most credit for your excess energy produced during peak hours. The utility credits your account during peak rate periods at three times the off-peak rates. This helps to reduce the size of your solar installation, and can zero out your bill over the course of each year.

Net energy metering program offers customers the opportunity to get credit for the electricity they have produced in excess of the amount they use. During the day, the system “banks” any surplus energy on the utility grid (PG&E), feeding it back to the utility and generating a credit on your bill. The more electricity you produce, the more you save. At night, the system automatically draws the electricity you need from the grid. The advance and reverse flow of electricity is completely automatic, and provides a smooth, uninterrupted flow of power for all your household needs. Utilities also benefit from net metering because the system load factor is improved when customers are producing electricity during peak periods.

Tie Into the Grid to Sell Your Energy

Solar electric systems are tied to the utility grid through inverters. The solar energy system’s kilowatt-hour (kWh) production is tracked every day by the inverters. When more electricity is produced than is used, the inverter sends the surplus power to the grid. Your utility meter actually spins backwards!

By properly sizing your solar energy system to cover your electricity usage, you can zero out your bill completely and you won’t have to pay an electric bill again for the life of the system, except for a small monthly connection fee.

SolarCraft, the North Bay’s Solar Energy Experts, can design a solar energy system tailored to your home’s size and your budget. In fact, many homeowners are finding that an entry-level, solar energy system drastically reduces PG&E bills and is affordable.

Be kind to the environment and your budget. You probably already know that you pay a higher rate for the amount of electricity you use over PG&E’s “baseline”. The more you use, the higher rates you pay for each “tier”. A small solar energy system will provide enough FREE, clean electricity to reduce your usage and allow you to stay in the lower cost tiers and purchase your energy at the lowest rates possible.

See for yourself! Locate the rate tiers under Electric Account Detail of your PG&E bill. If your bill regularly includes charges in Tiers 3, 4, or 5, you can eliminate the top, most expensive tiers from your PG&E bill, just by installing a small solar energy system.

“SolarCraft installed our turnkey 5 kW solar electric system. They designed the system and procured all necessary permits. The system was installed in a matter of days without a glitch. Our system started generating electricity immediately and I haven’t had an electric bill since. I do not understand why every homeowner in California doesn’t take advantage of this opportunity. SolarCraft did an excellent job and I would use them again in an instant.”

— Chris Valentino, Novato, CA

“Solar energy seemed like the best way to do our part in reducing dependency on foreign oil. The workers were great. The job was tough but they completed on time, cleaned up the worksite beautifully and the system works like a charm. Our first full month of operation generated a $110 credit from PG&E, and that was with two air conditioners and pool equipment going every day. I look forward to receiving our utility bills now.”

— Richard & Wendy Grahman, Sonoma, CA
