Falling is a major concern for people as they progress through the aging process; many of us know someone who has fallen in the past or may currently have the fear of falling. If you know of someone that suffers from fear of falling or has fallen multiple times, the Falls Coalition urges you to read and share this article. The Falls Coalition is comprised of several community- oriented individuals with a desire to help the elderly population by promoting fall prevention techniques and maintaining a safe home environment. The Falls Coalition has been a driving force in St. Augustine, promoting safe environments for seniors since the 2000’s and consists of members from the Fire Department, Sheriffs Office, Council on Aging, Elder Source, Brooks Rehabilitation, St. Johns Housing Partnership and the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Their mission is to help at-risk seniors create an environment that is more conducive to their specific needs.

The consequences of falling can be harsh for individuals who are above the age of 60. A fall can cause traumatic injury leading to permanent or temporary disability, loss of independence, financial burden and, in worst cases,

lead to death. This is why preventative action to stop falling is so important. The Falls Coalition tries to provide seniors in the area with preventative steps to counteract the rising number of falls reported each year. Debra Gray, a Physical Therapist and Geriatric Specialist at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, along with her colleague Julie Watson DPT., provide free in- home assessments in order to “identify potential barriers or obstacles and to make recommendations for home modifications with the goal of keeping an older adult as safe and independent as possible in their home.” Independence is extremely important to people but, as we age that becomes more difficult. The home assessment services of Debra Gray and Julie Watson provide seniors with tips as to how they can keep their home safe and hazard free. In addition to their services Michael Large, head of

the Care Connection Department at the Council on Aging, helps provide individuals who would benefit from assistive devices such as walkers or canes, grab bars and small home repairs like light bulb replacement, to reduce fall risk.

In addition to the home services offered to prevent falls there are two classes available through River House, a COA community center. These classes are designed to help individuals recovering from falls and those who want to prevent them in the future.

6 ABOUT THE GOLFCOA GOLF TOURNAMENT BENEFITS SUNSHINE CENTER AND MEMORY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMSSwing away. And support the COA! The Council on Aging is pleased to announce a perfect way to support services for COA memory services and for the almost 4,000 St. Johns County residents currently dealing with brain trauma, Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementias. Take a look... it’s as easy as one...two...swing!Mark your calendars for this year’s COA Sunshine Golf Tournament, scheduled for Friday, March 31st, 1:30pm at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club located at 205 St. Johns Golf Drive. This tournament is a Captain’s Choice event and includes a BBQ Buffet and Awards Ceremony. The Cost is $100 per golfer or $380 per team of four. In addition, there are several sponsorship opportunities available – from $100 hole sponsorships to a $5000 title sponsorship.

ABOUT THE SERVICESCOA’s Adult Day Care can be a valuable resource for those who are faced with daily caregiving duties. One hurdle that is difficult to overcome is the feeling that no one can provide the same type of care that a family member can offer in his or her own home. But the truth is that caregiving, while often a joyous and rewarding task, can also be frustrating, overwhelming and exhausting. Another truth is that everyone receives physical and emotional benefits from regular social interaction with others – and that’s where the COA Sunshine Center comes in. At the Sunshine Center, we believe that everyone has a unique gift or contribution to make – sometimes it just takes a little effort to help them find and share their own special light. Our COA Integrative Memory Enhancement Programs (IMEP) offer support for those just beginning to experience memory changes. For many, the first step after noticing these changes is to schedule a simple, 10-minute test called a memory screening. Then, utilizing modalities like cognitive awareness exercises and other strategies, COA memory services that help address memory issues. Memory enhancement programs are currently offered in six convenient locations. All proceeds from participation in the Sunshine Golf Tournament will support the services provided by the COA Sunshine Center and the COA integrative Memory Enhancement Program. So, what are you waiting for? Get in the swing! For more information on the tournament or details on sponsorship opportunities, please call Debbie Van Gemert, 904-209-3684.

EAT RIGHTFood, Nutrition and Health Tips from the Academy of Nutrition and DieteticsBuilding a healthy plate is easy when you make half your plate fruits and vegetables. It’s also a great way to add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. All this is packed in fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and fat. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Try the following tips to enjoy more fruits and vegetables every day.

1. Variety abounds when using vegetables as pizza topping. Try broccoli, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and zucchini.

2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie made with low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana.

3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled in a whole-wheat tortilla.

4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite low-fat salad dressing for dipping.

5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red peppers, mushrooms and onions.

6. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves or mandarin oranges.*

7. Keep cut vegetables handy for mid-afternoon snacks, side dishes, lunch box additions or a quick nibble while waiting for dinner. Ready-to-eat favorites: red, green or yellow peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, carrots, celery sticks, cucumbers, snap peas or whole radishes.

8. Place colorful fruit where everyone can easily grab something for a snack-on-therun. Keep a bowl of fresh, just ripe whole fruit in the center of your kitchen or dining table.

9. Get saucy with fruit. Puree apples, berries, peaches or pears in a blender for a thick, sweet sauce on grilled or broiled seafood or poultry, or on pancakes, French toast or waffles.

10. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. Turn any omelet into a hearty meal with broccoli, squash, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions with low-fat sharp cheddar cheese.

11. “Sandwich” in fruits and vegetables. Add pizzazz to sandwiches with sliced pineapple, apple, peppers, cucumber and tomato as fillings.

12. Wake up to fruit. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal, ready-to-eat cereal, yogurt or toaster waffle.

13. Top a baked potato with beans and salsa or broccoli and low-fat cheese.14. Microwave a cup of vegetable soup as a snack or with a sandwich for lunch.15. Add grated, shredded or chopped vegetables such as zucchini, spinach and

carrots to lasagna, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce and rice dishes.16. Make fruit your dessert: Slice a banana lengthwise and top with a scoop of low-

fat frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of chopped nuts.17. Stock your freezer with frozen vegetables to steam or stir-fry for a quick side

dish.18. Make your main dish a salad of dark, leafy greens and other colorful vegetables.

Add chickpeas or edamame (fresh soybeans). Top with low-fat dressing.*19. Fruit on the grill: Make kabobs with pineapple, peaches and banana. Grill on low

heat until fruit is hot and slightly golden.20. Dip: Whole wheat pita wedges in hummus, baked tortilla chips in salsa,

strawberries or apple slices in low-fat yogurt, or graham crackers in applesauce.

GET BEHIND THE PLATE! THE COA HOME PLATE PROJECT

At the office or a restaurant, eating away from home doesn’t have to undermine your healthful habits. To help find your healthy eating style during National Nutrition Month®, celebrated each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages everyone to “Put Your Best Fork Forward” when dining out.“Choosing healthful options at restaurants is easier today than it ever has been,” says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy spokesperson Robin Foroutan. “Use a smart-eating strategy to plan ahead, consider the menu and choose foods carefully.”According to Foroutan, how much you eat is as important as what you eat.

For example, if you plan to have lunch with coworkers, eat a light dinner. If you know you’re going to a restaurant in the evening, plan to have lighter meals earlier in the day.“It’s important to consider meal options at different restaurants and choose places with a range of menu items,” Foroutan says. “You can balance your meal by choosing healthier items such as lean protein foods, non-starchy vegetables and fruits.”Most restaurants offer healthy side dishes such as salads and steamed or roasted vegetables.“Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how the food is prepared or for a substitute or an extra side of veggies,” Foroutan says. “Make special requests

to meet your nutritional needs, like asking for a side salad instead of mashed potatoes or fries.”To-go boxes can help control portions. Eat half your meal at the restaurant and take the other half home for a second meal.As part of National Nutrition Month, the Academy’s website includes articles, recipes, videos and educational resources to spread the message of good nutrition and an overall healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Consumers can also follow National Nutrition Month on Facebook and Twitter(#NationalNutritionMonth).
