Appendage Piles, South Side of Wilshire

• Appendage piles are the ancillary piles for the structures on the sides of the station box. • Located on the north and south side of Wilshire Blvd on La Brea, Sycamore, and Orange. • Appendage structures include:

• Vent shafts, exit stairwells, and station entrance at La Brea • Appendage piles are smaller and shorter (40-60ft.) than the station box piles. • Requires closures on La Brea, Sycamore, and Orange.

Decking • On Wilshire, between Orange Dr. and Detroit St. • Construction of a concrete deck, curb to curb • Sidewalks be maintained, or pedestrian detours created • Decking will serve as the temporary street surface • Traffic will travel on the installed deck panels while the station

is constructed underground • La Brea Station:

– Approx. 1,000 feet long – Approx. 70 feet wide – Approx. 60 feet deep

• Will follow pile operations; anticipated to begin June 2016 • Will work closely with First Responders on emergency access

● Jet grouting is a construction process that uses high-pressure air

and grout to create a deep soil-concrete block. ● The purpose of jet grouting is to reinforce and strengthen the

soil with concrete to support tunneling and cross-passage excavation.
