All the right connectionsPDP connections include i.LINK (IEEE 1394)terminals, Pioneer SR+ inputs, opticaldigital audio outputs, and two high-bandwidth HDMI inputs. You’ll beready for full reception of audio and video signals in current formats and inupcoming generations as well.

Versatile Media Receiver The PDPs’ powerful, easy-to-use MediaReceiver incorporates a terrestrial digitalTV (DTV) tuner and provides three sets ofcomponent inputs, including one set on thefront panel. Only 11-11/16” deep, it can beinstalled vertically (using its suppliedstand) or horizontally.

Easy on-screen GUI HOME MENUA new graphical user interface (GUI)makes it easy to control the panels’settings. Starting with the HOME MENUbutton on the remote control, you’ll quicklymaster the units’ functions with theintuitive on-screen GUI.

SR+ input for amplifier controlConnect a PureVision plasma TV’s SR+terminal to a separately available PioneerAV Receiver*, and the displayautomatically selects the receiver’s signalsource. This gives you on-screen controlof the receiver’s volume level, surroundmode, and other functions.*SR+ compatible Pioneer receivers only.

Integrated ATSC Terrestrial DTV TunerA built-in next-generation terrestrial ATSC (Advanced Television SystemsCommittee-compatible) tuner featuresDTV (digital TV) program channelselection function to check or search forsuch programs. Connect the unit’s IEEE1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) terminal to a D-VHS recorder torecord DTV programs. DTV CC (closedcaption) is also available.

Multi-Window Display: a great view x2This is for those times when you want towatch two shows at the same time. Multi-Window Display takes dual-materialviewing to new levels, letting you displayany combination of HDTV, NTSC—evencomputer—either as twin images (50/50split screen) or as Picture in Picture. Now,you can watch pro football on HDTValongside fantasy football on your PC. Ora right-corner freeze frame of a golfswing alongside the telecast it camefrom. Or two music specials….OK, you get the picture.

Three surround modes mix things upTo expand your sound options, Pioneer plasma TVs feature threesurround modes: SRS, for dynamic 3-Dsurround throughout an expansivelistening area; TRU BASS for surprisinglybig, natural bass sound; and FOCUS,which enhances the surround effect andshifts the sound field upward—ideal if thedetachable speakers are installedhorizontally underneath the plasma TV.

Slim speakers, big soundDespite their compact size—and stylishdesign—the PDPs’ detachable, two-waybass-reflex speakers deliver maximumsound quality, imaging clarity, and soundfield performance. Each speaker featuresan oval full-range speaker and a tweeterwith a neodymium magnet.

Speakers that change locationsThe PDPs’ detachable speakers can be mounted in two locations: either back-set slightly on the panel’s sides, or underneath it, which is especiallyconvenient when you place the panel in a corner. This mounting flexibility alsoallows you to change the panel’s lookperiodically.

Further enhanced reproduction in the low brightness range

Deep Encased Cell Structure: truebrilliance Pioneer’s patented Deep Encased CellStructure has been upgraded with newgreen and blue phosphor elements, delivering unprecedented contrast andbrightness: 1,100 cd/m2 for the 43-inchand 1,000 cd/m2 for the 50-inch panel.White reproduction is improved for moresubtle nuances, while clarity is boostedfor more natural, precise rendering ofcharacters and images.

PURE DRIVE1.07 billion colours on displayPure Drive technology is the key to howprocessed images are able to look clearand natural on a plasma display panel. A perfect example: Pioneer’s ACE II(Advanced Continuous Emission II)processes red, green, and blue primarycolour elements (RGB) to reproduce anastonishing 1.07 billion colours. Other displays just can’t match thesmoothness and subtlety of colour onPioneer PDPs. But that’s not all. ACE II produces an amazing 1,024grayscale steps, for vastly improvedrendering of images in darker scenes, and virtually eliminates quantization.

Bottom line: for the most accurate colourreproduction, the choice is clear.

Advanced PureCinema with 3-3 pulldownFilm doesn’t translate directly to a standard that a TV can process; to display a movie, 6 frames per second (fps) must be added to the film’s original 24 fps to equal 30 fps, the standard that TV uses. Called 3-2 Pulldown, thisinterpolation process improved NTSC reproduction of film-based material, but generates uneven motion known as judder. Pioneer solved the issue by developing an exclusive IC that enables 3-3 Pulldown, which synchronizes perfectly the frame rate of film andeliminates the need for interpolations. Now, film-based material on DVD, videotape, and regular TV will match the smooth, natural reproduction of film.

Digital processing, absolute fidelityPure Drive circuitry unifies and digitallyprocesses all signals right up to thedriver, from the instant they’re input intothe receiver until they’re displayed asimages. Also, each block in the imageprocessing circuit is directly connectedusing the shortest signal path, to minimizeimage-degrading noise and signaldeterioration. This adds up to superiorretention of signal quality, from HDTV, PC,or other signal sources.

Conventional PDP Pioneer’s NaturalEnhancer

Dynamic HD Converter

Natural Enhancer for sharper detailNatural Enhancer is an industry firsttechnology that takes contour imagecorrection to the next level. On any source, analog or digital, Pure Drive-poweredNatural Enhancer cleans up those wavyMoire (“moray”) patterns and enhances thecontrast at the edges of images—renderinga clean, detailed picture.

Dynamic Range Expander boosts contrast Fuller use of video signal spectrum capacityexpands dynamic range, for blacker blacks, whiter whites, and outstanding overallcontrast. You can select among high, medium, and low settings for best results.

Digital CTI keeps colours honestWhen two colour images intersect on-screen, the usual result is a ditheredpattern and a muddy combination ofcolours. For this reason, Digital ColourTransient Improvement (CTI) is used tomaintain true colour fidelity and colourresolution.

MPEG Noise Reduction smooths out imagesFor smoother-looking pictures, even whenyou’re viewing low-light scenes, MPEGNoise Reduction cuts “mosquito noise”caused by MPEG video compression usedin DVD and HDTV sources.

Digital Noise Reduction for a cleaner pictureSpecial high-luminance cyclic DigitalNoise Reduction circuitry reducesrandom digital noise, including colournoise and inconsistency (especially seenin dark image areas) that arise in thesignal reproduction process of terrestrialbroadcasts, DVDs, and HD.

10-Bit 3D Y/C Separation ends dot crawlPowered by Pure Drive, 10-Bit 3D Y/CSeparation effectively keeps luminance(Y) and chrominance (C) signals separate, reducing the annoying video noise called“dot crawl” and improving the renderingof contoured objects.

10-Bit Digital Colour Decoder cuts colour noiseColour noise is another form of videointerference—noticeable speckledimperfections seen within solid colours on your screen. 10-bit Digital ColourDecoder reduces colour noise andprovides better frequency response, for purer, cleaner colours.

HD Converter sharpens up imagesInterlaced signals of terrestrialbroadcasts, as well as DVD and PC videosources, are up-converted intoprogressive signals, for optimal viewingon the PDP-5040HD (1,280 x 768-dot high-resolution) and the PDP-4340HD (1,024 x768-dot high-resolution). Now with 84detection points on the screen, HDConverter offers sharper, more naturalimages free of the jagged edges anddistortion seen on displays usingconventional converters.
