DIE ANTWOORD LIVE Like several of their c o n t e m p o r a r i e s (i.e. Kreayshawn), the Johannesburg-based Die Antwoord released a video (“Enter the Ninja”) that went viral and contained themes that left viewers -- especially American journalists -- wondering if it was sincere, or a joke, or just a heavily-e x a g g e r a t e d appropriation of

another culture.

The reality is more complicated: Yolandi Visser and Ninja of Die Antwoord’s zef aesthetic is linked to the South African movement of the same name, a subculture supposedly analogous to hip-hop elsewhere in the world -- one that’s about being fresh and posh even when you don’t necessarily have the means to. Zef, though, is a post-apartheid entity, so it’s rife with more questions about race than about class; Yolandi and Ninja may or may not be adopting the style of their black or mixed-race counterparts. In interviews, they’ve insisted that race is a particularly moot point for the average South African.

Once the academic dialogue is removed from the Die Antwoord equation, it’s less difficult to decide if you love them or hate them: post-viral video, Yolandi became a sex symbol (while her style is undeniably great, the girl is hot); the songs are horribly vulgar but fun; their live show is, as Ninja described in an interview with New

York, “a mind fuck.” You can decide for yourself when they play at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale at 8pm on October 22.

SKELETONS ON PARADEDespite South Florida’s large Hispanic population, La Dia de Los Muertos doesn’t get a lot of play down here. The simple explanation is that the Latin American world is not a monolith, and the Day of the Dead is a primarily Mexican celebration, with a few notable exceptions. But the festivities Friday, Nov. 2, should bring the holiday a good deal of notoriety, at least to the denizens of Fort Lauderdale.

If you’re not all skeletoned-out from Halloween, the Day of the Dead will cap off that spooky time with a traditional processional through the heart of town, from the Museum of Art on Las Olas Boulevard, up Andrews Avenue, to the FAT Village Art District beyond Northwest Fifth Street. If you want to view the parade, lineup on the west side of Andrews by the time things kick off at 6:15 pm. But if you’d rather march, meet at the museum by 5:45.

The parade will feature the expected skeletons, including little skeletons, pirate skeletons, giant skeleton puppets, skeleton circus performers, and so on. Also, other traditionally Mexican cultural touchstones will march, including mariachis and Aztec icons.

As with the American bastardization of St. Patrick’s Day, which has turned a religious Irish holiday into an American one filled with booze and drunken sing-alongs, so we have turned a day generally spent privately honoring deceased family members in Mexico, to a skeleton-filled parade. Which is not to say that such things do not exist in Mexico, but they aren’t exactly the point of the Day of the Dead. So, while you’re checking out this year’s parade, don’t forget to tip one to the homies.

Day of the Dead festivities take place Friday, Nov. 2, at FAT Village Art District in Fort Lauderdale. Festivities begin at 6:15pm with a parade from the Museum of Art in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free.

BOW WOW WOW MEETS MOONFEST #20 Moonfest, the downtown West Palm Beach time-honored tradition of lowering one’s inhibitions for a night and dressing up like a half-naked zombie or drunken troll, rolls into its milestone 20th year on Saturday, October 27. Event organizers look to bring this ghastly bash back to its ghoulish adult fun-time roots. Moonfest will be strictly 21-and-over this year, and

attendees can expect to pay a nominal entrance fee. The costume contest prize money has been raised to $1000 for first place. As with every edition of the yearly twilight revelry--that packed as many as 70-thousand people in the 200 through 500 blocks of Clematis Street last year,--Moonfest will feature a bevy of musical acts. If the same vein of previous years, we expect the exact number of performers to be 20-- in honor of this, the platinum (20th,) anniversary of MoonFest. Local favorites such as post-punk purveyors Mission Veo, groovesters South Side Dub and crusty folk punk troubadours Everymen are slated to take the stage.

All eyes will be on new wave progenitors Bow Wow Wow however, and its alluring front woman Annabella Lwin. Not to be confused with West Coast hip-hop idol Snoop Doggy’s nephew with a similar moniker (minus the one bow,) Bow Wow Wow rose to prominence in the early ‘80s. the group’s debut album, featuring a 14-year-old Lwin naked on the cover, stirred up some quick controversy for the band. A project that was the brainchild of Sex Pistols’ manger Malcom McLaren, Bow Wow Wow would eventually put out two mega hits in ”Go Wild in the Country” and ”I Want Candy.” The latter would make a profound impact on director Sofia Coppola, who cites that number and Lwin as a huge influence in her cinematic biopic of French teen queen Marie Antoinette. Lwin is reunited with original Bow Wow Wow bassist Leigh Gorman to perform at this year’s MoonFest. It is only one of two dates scheduled for the fashionable and influential group, MoonFest party-goers should considered themselves lucky. By Alex Rendon

SWANS, HOT PANTS, MONEY SHOT Swans, obliterating eardrums since 1982. What a fitting bumper sticker slogan that would be for the aforementioned bombastic noise-rock act from Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Alas, the group’s enigmatic front man, 58-year-old Michael Gira, would never agree. Although much has been made of his group’s audible assault throughout the years, Gira feels that notion has been overblown. “We are loud, but I doubt we are

any louder than My Bloody Valentine or AC/DC was.” Gira quantifies his brand of clamor. “[Swans] is not loud because of an aggressive intent, the electric instruments we use sustain in such a way, and the overtones we emit are more pronounced, that a sort of whirlpool is created for listeners to fall into.” The jarring whirlpools of sound heard on Swans’ 1983 debut, Filth, quickly made Gira and company’s leaders of New York’s no wave scene. Fast forward 29 years and 12 studio albums later and Gira is still knee deep in swirls of sonic fervor. Swans latest effort, The Seer, released in August, is his group’s

most ambitious effort to date. It is a dense, multi-layered, post-rock 2-hour

long opus that showcases Swans’ entire bag of tricks. An instrumentally inclined effort, the album contains lengthy numbers, such as the wrought 32-minute title track, which challenges listener’s attention spans. “We just follow the thread of where the music is going,” said Gira about his newest album. “We went for whatever seemed to be necessary, without any consideration for commerciality or audience appeal.” Luckily for Gira, Swans has a number of avid fans that seek out wherever his musical inclinations land. Swans performed before a packed house at West Palm Beach live music dive, Respectable Street Café, in 2011. “I liked the young ladies in hot pants,” said Gira about his fondest memory of performing in West Palm Beach. Besides being assaulted by the Swans’ abrasive music, concert goers might have noticed the heat, as Gira demands that air conditioning is turned off when he performs. Gira explains that there are a couple of reasons why he does this; “the A.C. causes my vocal chords to seize up, it is a very common demand amongst singer. And, I also like the physical trial aspect. Turning the air off makes the shows like an ordeal, but one that leads to a money shot.”
