Puppet Script:Where the Light is Better

Mary is searching the ground looking for a lost coin. John comes along, humming This Little Light of Mine, notices Mary and offers to help look.

Puppet LinesJohn Hi Mary! What are you doing?Mary Looking for a coin I dropped.John I have some time. Maybe I can help you find it.MARY Okay. I could use some help. I’ve been looking for hours.MARY and JOHN

(Search around the puppet stage for a while.)

JOHN Did you say you have been searching for hours and haven’t found your coin yet?

MARY Yes.JOHN Well, we have looked everywhere I can think and some places I

can’t think. And still no coin. Are you sure you lost your coin?MARY Oh, I lost it all right.JOHN Well, think about it. What were you doing when you lost it?MARY Well, I was at the vending machine buying a Pepsi. I tried to put

my coin in the slot. But it slipped out of my hand. I heard it hit the ground and roll a little.

JOHN But MARY, the vending machine is way over there.MARY Yeah, so what?JOHN Well, don’t you think you should look for your coin over there?MARY No. The light’s better here.JOHN But the coin’s over there.MARY I know, but I’m afraid of the dark. You never know what could be

hiding out there in the dark.JOHN But, don’t you have a flashlight?MARY Yes, but I’m still scared. And, you never know what the light may

attract. It may attract a scary monster.JOHN A monster? I doubt that. You have to look for lost things where

lost things are. You look where you lost them.MARY What do you mean, JOHN?JOHN The purpose of the flashlight is to shine light in dark places. You

know, it’s like that cute little song “This Little Light of Mine.”

MARY Now you’re getting really serious.JOHN Not really. Think about this. If you shine your light where lost

things are, you will probably find lost things. If you stay in the comfort of bright lights, you’ll never find lost things.

MARY So, do you think I should go over there and turn on the flashlight?JOHN Yes MARY, that’s exactly what I mean.MARY and JOHN

(walk back and forth across the stage for a few seconds, humming “This Little Light of Mine)

MARY Look JOHN, I found my coin!JOHN Right on! You found it where it was lost.MARY Mmmmmmmm. JOHN, this wasn’t about me losing my coin, was

it?JOHN Not exactly, MARY. It was about lost things and where to find

them.MARY Okay, I get it now. We can find a lost coin or other wonderful

things like God if we really look with our whole heart. Then, we can know the joy of God in our life.

JOHN That’s probably better than I could have said.MARY Thanks, JOHN.JOHN No problemo. Hey, you know what, these girls and boys look like

good singers. I bet they would help us sing. Boys & girls, can you help us sing that song?

MARY Them? Now I know you’re fooling me.JOHN No, I trust them. They look excited.MARY Okay, let’s sing it.MARY, JOHN and children

MARY That was fun, JOHN.JOHN It was fun MARY. You know what, let’s go lose another coin.
