CREDIT FOR READING

The pupil who reads fifty or more books, following the directions given, is entitled to a Testi¬ monial of Reading issued by the New York State Department of Education.

The pupil who reads ten or more books in a school year will receive a blue seal.

DIRECTIONS TO READERS

Each pupil must have one of the graded book lists for the permanent record of his reading. The books read in each grade must be selected from every group, and not more than half may

be stories.. Fifteen short poems, approved by the teacher, will receive the same credit as one book.

SUGGESTIONS REGARDING THE USE OF THIS BOOK

For many years Binghamton has kept a permanent record of the pupil’s reading throughout the first nine years of the child’s school life. Two years after this plan was adopted, a survey of the supplementary reading showed that more than thirty thousand titles were read by children from the fourth to the eighth years inclusive.

It is important that children form the habit of home and library reading as soon as they are able to read. The teacher should direct the child in this work. Before children are able to read they must get their appreciation of literature through the teacher’s presentation of interesting- stories and poems. The responsibility of forming for the child the habit of reading wholesome literature because of keen enjoyment of it rests largely with the teacher in the elementary school.

Careful attention should be given to the selection of the book that meets the needs of the individual child. Teachers should bear in mind that it is not possible to grade all pupils of the same year alike in literature, for some have heard through reading done in the home much more than others. The gradation designated in this book is therefore only that which is to be expected of the average pupil who is up-to-grade in his ability to read. The better reader will forge ahead into new realms of literature much more readily than pupils for whom the thought of the printed page is obscure. Because of this fact it is necessary for the teacher to know the reading ability of the individual well enough to suggest a book which he can comprehend, leading him gradually to the deeper and higher type.

The permanent record of the pupil’s reading has proved a great stimulus for promoting sup¬ plementary reading, for the child takes pride in this accomplishment and delights in preserving a record of his reading. Each pupil should be required to buy his own book which is held in the possession of the teacher until the end of the eighth or ninth years when the book is given to the pupil.

A minimum of three books should be required each half year. Best results are secured by some uniformity of plan in regard to the time for reports. For convenience we have made a three- part division of the term, the pupil being required to have read, reported upon to the satisfaction of the teacher, and recorded by her in the record book, one book at the end of the sixth, the twelfth, and the eighteenth weeks. The record book should be placed in the hands of the child during the first, seventh, and thirteenth weeks so that he may, with the help of the teacher, decide what books he wishes to read during the allotted six weeks’ period. Before allowing the pupil credit for having read the book, the teacher should require an oral account of the story. There are several good ways of testing the child’s knowledge of what he has read. It often happens that a number of children are reading the same book. All pupils who wish to report upon the same book may arrange a program for oral English. Two pupils may plan to tell the story, another may give a vivid description connected with the book, another a characterization of the most interesting character, others may give impressions or opinions of the book. This group method arouses interest.

Pupils should be encouraged to give accounts of articles which from time to time they find interesting. As they recommend favorite titles the skilful teacher will read the books or articles recommended. This practice establishes a friendly confidence between teacher and pupil and encourages others to read that they, too, may recommend.

For non-fiction the following form of book report may be found satisfactory:

I. Name of book and author. 1 II. Other books by the same author.

III. Type or kind of book: biography, travel, etc. IV. Interesting features of the book.

V. Your impressions of the book. VI. Values worth remembering.

FOREWORD

This graded book list is designed to be an aid to teachers and pupils in the intelligent selection of the books to be read by the latter.

As it is for school use, with a few exceptions, the most expensive editions have not been included.

Beginning with the third grade, and purposely avoiding a technical classification, the titles have been arranged in seven groups. This will stimulate a variety of reading on the part of every child, and yet provide for the individual taste of each one.

In addition, space is given in every grade for the listing of other approved books read. This record will show at a glance the books read year by year by the child, and should be of

interest as a permanent possession. It is important to encourage pupils to do more than simply say that they did or did not like a

book. The following outline taken from the Pennsylvania library manual is suggested as a basis for a more extended report.
