NO HOLDS BARRED What a contrast to the Talibanised Peshawar school

where children keep dying from the horror of bullet rain thathas created a record in

While the animals in Taliban uniforms rained death oninnocent children for fun, the Bangalore-Chennai greencorridor turned greener, awakening the thought in our mindsthat humanity has no boundaries in a flight for life.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORTANGEDCO hounds consumer viaautomated SMS for one rupee dueSir, Tamilnadu Generation and Distribution

Corporation (TANGEDCO) recently updatedthe mobile numbers of its consumers with aview to keep them posted of the power dues. Thewell-intentioned move sometimes causesnuisance to the consumers. A retired teacher, who stays in our apartment complex keptreceiving repeated SMS from TANGEDCO onhis mobile last week informing him that he hasan outstanding amount of Re.1 and that heshould pay the same immediately or his powersupply could get disconnected. Since he had nopending dues, he approached EB office. Theofficials found that the messages were beingdelivered to his mobile by mistake due to adatabase error. Considering the due of Re. 1, isit worth at all to send such messages even tothe correct consumer? TANGEDCO has beencollecting security deposits every two yearsbased on the consumption levels of eachconsumer. While one cannot but laugh at theway the TANGEDCO works, incurring suchwasteful expenditure for such a piddly amountcould be the reason for the recurring loss. Forthe inefficiency of the officials, the consumersare made to pay in the forms of hike in powertariff!—V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street,T. Nagar

No white board bus on 12C routeSir, At present, MTC is only plying deluxe

buses on the 12C route. The ticket rates aremuch higher compared to the white board(ordinary fare) MTC buses. The service isinfrequent and hence the buses are oftenovercrowded. It is a popular route for a numberof students, office goers and senior citizens likeme who regularly visit temples en route. Whenwill the MTC and the government understandabout the difficulties of poor commuters? I urgethe authorities to increase the frequency andalso ply white board buses on the 12C route forthe benefit of the commuters. – A.Venkitachalam, 21, Abdul Aziz Street, T.Nagar

Beggars’ menace in Natesan ParkSir, I would like to bring to the notice of park

Beggarsare on the rise within the park. They disturb thepark visitors. It appears to be the work of aracket as a number of these beggars alsoappear to be mentally challenged. They areuncouth and also litter the park. There has alsobeen a recent spurt of young couples datinginside the park and indulging in unsavoryactivities causing embarrassment to thevisitors and setting a bad example to youngkids who come to the park to play. I appeal tothe authorities to take suitable action so thatthe peace and tranquility of the park and itsvisitors are maintained. – H. Nagesh Bhan-darkar, 40, Sri Krishna Apartments, 8th

Where are the PDS inspectorsand officials?

Sir, This refers to the article ‘Hazard outsideration shop on Rameswaram Road’ publishedin Mambalam Times last week under the‘Letters to the Editor’ column. This is the secondtime it has been highlighted. The first reportappeared in 2013 and was also taken up withthe PDS officials then. However it is sad to notethat the same situation continues two yearsdown the line. It has actually gone from bad toworse. I too buy from the same shop and haveoften seen rats and roaches inside the shop. The shop owner in completely unmindful andturns a blind eye when we point it out to him.It is high time the sanitary inspectors or theelected representative did their job and tooksuitable action against the ration shop owner.—S. No proper fire safety norms forcommercials establishments

Sir, The report “T. Nagar residents movecourt on fire safety” published in last week’sissue of Mambalam Times is an eye opener notonly for T. Nagar/Mambalam residents butalso for every resident of Chennai. There hasbeen a spurt of uncontrolled commercializationand rampant construction of high risestructures in narrow streets all over Chennai. Most of these are not as per constructionsnorms and I wonder how these get sanctionfrom the concerned authorities. In any panicsituation arises, there is no way to exit from thefloor to safety. The awareness level of thepublic is low and hence there are noprotests. The Government too is blind eyed tothe situation and must strengthen the sanctionnorms and also conduct regular inspection ofthese multi level complexes.— A.Venkitachalam Iyer, Badrachalam Street,West Mambalam
