PROGRAM INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS This program has the following limitations:

1. The program has been designed using well documented, standard calculations for centrifugal pumps.

2. This program does not include viscosity correction. While viscosity

correction is not commonly used, the user should verify using standard viscosity correction charts that the program will produce accurate results for the fluid being studied.

Pump Calculations supports the European number convention (i.e., using a "," instead of a "." for the decimal point). The program determines which convention to use based on the Country setting you have selected for your device.

To change the calculation mode, tap the drop-down list-box as shown below:

As shown, there are three calculation modes available, i.e.,

1. Manually enter discharge pressure (and efficiency) 2. Manually enter differential head (and efficiency) 3. Automatically enter differential head and efficiency from a pump curve

Note that if you choose Use Curve, a second popup appears allowing you to choose between the speed entered on the Curve form or the actual speed of the pump. After choosing a mode and entering your data, tap the CALC button for your calculations to proceed. Results are shown at the bottom of the screen. Tapping the NPSH button will take you to a form where you can calculate NPSH available as well as the pump suction pressure, while tapping ECON will take you to the Operating Cost form. These will be discussed in the following sections. If you tap the information button to the right of efficiency the program will display the Specific Speed, which is useful for estimating the efficiency of the pump if you do not have information from the manufacturer.

Page 13: Pump Calculations

Pump Calculations version 2.5.2 12

NPSH Form The NPSH form allows you to calculate the NPSH available for the pump as well as the suction pressure.

If flowrate or density was supplied when in the main form, these values are carried over into the NPSH form. Also, changing them in the NPSH form will update the main form. After entering your data into all of the supplied fields, tap the CALC button for your calculations to proceed. The results appear at the bottom of the screen. Tapping the LINE SIZE button will take you to the Steel Pipe Properties form. Here you can choose a nominal pipe size and schedule number to allow the program to find the suction line I.D. for you.

Tapping the EQUIV LENGTH button on the NPSH form will take you to the Equiv. Length Estimator form. This form lets you enter the number of the different types of fittings used for the pump suction line along with the quantity (straight length) of pipe. NOTE: A fitting for the entry into the suction line from a process vessel is built into the equivalent length calculation.

Tap the CALC button to calculate the equivalent length of your suction piping. Note that on this form the result appears near the top right hand side of the screen. To return to the NPSH form, tap the X button at the upper right hand corner of the screen. The calculated equivalent length will replace any previous value that may have been entered. While on the NPSH form you can also tap the information icon beside the absolute roughness entry. This will call up a form where you can select an absolute roughness for your pipe material.

Tapping the X button at the upper right hand corner of the NPSH form will return you to the main form. Note that if the calculated suction pressure is significantly different from the value entered on the main form an alert box will appear asking if you want to update the main form’s value (choose yes or no).

Troubleshooting Guide Problem Solution My Tungsten T3 crashes with a “Fatal” error when my device powers down with Pump Calculations running.

Verify that you have NSBSystemLib version 2.01 and NSBRuntime version 4.4.1 installed on your device.

I get a “Fatal” error:

• On start-up or

• When the Splash Screen

appears or

• When I use a menu

These type of errors are due to one of the following:

1. A “hack” (i.e., some third party launcher programs) being installed on your device. These programs modify Palm OS, sometimes with unpredictable results. Pump Calculations will work properly with unmodified Palm OS. Disable the hack to verify if this is the problem.

2. NSBRuntime, NSBSystemLib or MathLib being installed on a memory card instead of on the handheld itself. These files must be installed ONLY on the handheld.
