From the desk of… Reverend Thomas A. Davenport

Living INTO Lent…

Lent is a season of reflection, re-ordering priorities,

reviewing actions taken…or it can be.

One of the issues some have with Lent is that we don’t

actually choose to live INTO Lent. It is easier and less

time consuming to NOT do the work of reflecting, or

self-examination. Perhaps it is because we suspect if we look quite closely, it may

require some change, and we don’t like change! DUH!

But change is part and parcel of Lent! (as well as life!)

The gift of Lent is the permission to look at ourselves with brutal honesty. It may

be a little scary, but ultimately, it can lead to growth. It might help us become

who God is calling us all to be!

The caterpillar is a lovely thing, (well, some are sort of pretty), but it is really

destine to be a butterfly! We all have some resistance to change because we like

what and who we are, but it may not be what God has intended for us, we may

not be fully formed as we are.

I have been praying for Parchment United Methodist Church for many months

with the specific prayer of shaping us for the kingdom of God. I believe God is

calling us to be the church we once were, a “neighborhood Church” in the heart

of Parchment, where everyone is welcome.

I have been always celebrating where we have come from, yet I am praying for

where we will be going! I am always looking to who we can become, without dis-

honoring our memory. Yet, if we are concerned with change, we may face the

same fate as a caterpillar who refuses to become a butterfly. And it is not pretty.

I believe God is moving us to be about new things, and change is part of it. By the

time this newsletter is printed, I hope we will have permission from the city to

put up new signs for our church. I hope that we will also update our sanctuary

sound and visuals, so that we all can “Hear and See” so we may thrive, and live

into our vision of “Making Disciples of Jesus Christ, for the Transformation of the

World!” and we would be at place where everyone can “Come as You Are! We

Welcome You, We Love You, and offer HOPE!

I do not propose these changes just for change sake, but for the sake of the Gos-

pel of Jesus Christ, and for the Kingdom of God in Parchment (and the world)!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Thom Page 1

FEBRUARY FINANCES

Total Income: $9,055.25

Expenses:

Staff $8,524.37

Other Expenses 5,611.11

Ministry Shares 2,237.20

$16,372.68

You can see by the above figures we are barely bringing in enough to pay our staff. The Fi-

nance Committee has had to make some difficult decisions for February and March. We ask

you to pray for our church and the Finance Committee as we continue to work on the budg-

et. As you pray, ask God what you can do to help our church.
