We welcome students who have previously participated in Phase I or II of the PULSE program to reapply for admission to a more advanced level. There is no charge to participate in the PULSE program. Students that complete the program will earn a monetary stipend. CMSRU reserves the right to withhold stipend if a student is not making satisfactory progress. Special consideration will be given to groups traditionally under-represented in the fields of medicine and science (black/African American/Hispanic/Latino/American Indian/Alaskan Native) and those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Housing The PULSE program does not provide housing to participants; however Rutgers-Camden offers dormitory style accommodations at a discount to PULSE students. Rutgers-Camden is within walking distance to Cooper Medical School and is easily accessible via public transportation. PULSE participants are responsible for all housing costs and must adhere to Rutgers-Camden residential rules.

M PULSE is an academic enrichment program for college undergraduates interested in healthcare professions. Its primary goal is to introduce medical professions to groups traditionally underrepresented in the field, as well as those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

PULSE provides academic, clinical, research and service learning opportunities with a focus on urban health needs. The program helps students become lifelong learners and empowers them to use their knowledge to make a difference in their communities.

The full-day program runs five days per week for six weeks and culminates with the PULSE Symposium, a special event where students formally present posters highlighting their summer work or research projects to faculty, family and friends.

2015 Program Dates: June 8 – July 17 Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

PathophysiologyStudents in the PULSE program are introduced to new concepts through lectures and problem based learning activities. Biomedical and clinical faculty educate students about infections and diseases that are prevalent in urban settings. The pathophysiology section focuses on basic mechanisms of diseases affecting humans.

Urban Health FocusStudents learn about health, economic and educational disparities that exist for residents of urban communities. They interact with Camden healthcare providers and community

Participants in the PULSE program take part in a variety of science enrichment and health-oriented activities. The PULSE program offers three phases to serve students at all stages of undergraduate education. The curriculum includes a combination of course work, seminars, study skills workshops, and exposure to clinical settings.

Students in all phases have the opportunity to develop close relationships with medical school faculty, staff, and students who are delighted to provide individual mentoring on career choices and application procedures.

Learning & Presentation SkillsStudents learn how to develop the skills needed to succeed in science and medicine-based curricula. They attend and participate in various workshops about delivering effective poster and oral presentations.
