2. WHAT IS A PULSE ENGINE?2.1 Concepts fueling the Pulse Engine2.2 Techniques driving the Pulse Engine 2.3 Principles that apply the concepts and tech-niques

The Pulse Engine integrates more than 30 concepts tech-niques and principles into a powerful gunfighting meth-odology that enables you to dominate a lethal force con-frontation.

At it’s core, the Pulse En-gine shapes conflict to your advantage, and to the disad-vantage of your attacker.

The reality of a gunfight is that they are over within seconds, which doesn’t leave any room for remembering a complex

orchestration of concepts or techniques. We teach you when and how to “flip the switch”so that the power of your subconscious integrates with your natural movements and reflexes which are fueled by the adrenaline dump that occurs during a high stress event. You will literally “pulse” between observation and acting, between animal instinct and human rea-soning resulting in deliberate execution of decisive actions during a lethal force encounter.

The Pulse Engine Methodology is taught in building block fashion allowing you to study the concepts and practice the techniques until they become second nature. How you end up assembling those blocks is

BRIEFINGFig. 2.1THE PULSE ENGINE

entirely dependent upon the situation you encounter. Never is it done the same way twice.

Scenario

The best way to explain the Pulse Engine Methodol-ogy is by first thinking about your personal space (see Figure 1). Imagine yourself in the center of a circle that has a seven yard radius (about one and a half car lengths). You want to control the space in this circle at all times. Additionally, in certain situa-tions it might also mean up and down - like in a stair-well - so now your two dimensional “circle” becomes a three dimensional “bubble” or sphere.

Now, imagine a mark at the 12:00 position (straight ahead) and the 4:00 and 8:00 positions on your circle as well. As you are walking down the street you are going to check your 12, 4, and 8 positions periodically to monitor your personal space. Or, in other words, you are going to “pulse” your personal sphere to make sure all is well, in the same way radar pulses or pings for any threats.

The frequency of your pulsing is dependent upon the activity that is taking place. Walking at a leisurely pace in your own neighborhood during the day might require a pulse every few minutes. Walking back to your car at 2:00 a.m. in the morning in a sketchy section of town might require a pulse every few sec-onds, this is all situational dependent.

Think about your security bubble again - your per-sonal sphere. We asked you initially to think about 7 yards because most lost gunfights take place within a space of 7 yards or less. But as you move through your day this personal bubble will expand and con-tract based upon the environment you’re in. If you’re in a large empty parking lot your personal bubble

Page 3: PULSE O2DA - DISTRIBUTED SECURITY · 2016-10-27 · PULSE O2DA FIREARMS TRAINING, INC. ... The frequency of your pulsing is dependent upon the activity that is taking place. Walking

may expand to the edges of the parking lot. If you’re in a staircase between floors of an office high rise your bubble may compress to the few feet on either side of you. The key here is that you are always pulsing your personal bubble for threats.

Back to the parking lot at 2:00am. As you are walk-ing across the partially empty lot to get into your car, you notice at your 2 o’clock position a shadow mov-ing about 50 yards away. You have no idea if it’s a threat. But now having received a ping back, you’re going to pulse more rapidly (appropriate to your situ-ation) while monitoring the situation. With your next pulse you can see that the shadow is actually a man walking towards you. You have no idea if he is threat or not but what you do next will determine whether you live to see another day.

Your frequency of pulsing your personal sphere increases and you move from condition yellow which you have been in towards the color orange as you first run a simple threat assessment, were you now notice that this individual is on a trajectory to inter-cept. At this point you have identified a potential threat, and as he steps under a parking lot light, you now notice that he has what seems to be a heavy pipe of some sort in his hand that he is attempting to partially conceal.

Your increased pulsing tells you that you are too far from your vehicle to be able to safely run in order to get away, that there appear to be no more threats materializing anywhere else (because you are not solely focused on this one individual now to your 3 o’clock), and that there are enough vehicles in the parking lot to offer you some man-made obstacles if needed. Because this individual is closing the dis-tance and you are still not sure of the level of threat

presented, you decide to change your vector for a closer vehicle that will at the very least offer you some cover/concealment as well as an obstacle to your adversary.

You change your course for the nearest vehicle, and as you do so you notice a corresponding aspect change of your adversary as well. With your adver-sary yet 20 yards out and nearing your 5 o’clock, you decide to test for compliance and while rounding the nearest edge of the vehicle. You stop, make eye contact and in a loud and authoritative voice you demand “STOP! What do you want?!”

Your loud command only serves to prompt the individual to sprint towards you with what you can now clearly identify as a solid looking pipe. Upon his failure to comply and the added speed you immedi-ately move well behind the vehicle mentally moving from color code orange to red, and simultaneously present your firearm while loudly and authoritatively proclaiming “Stop, or I will f*****g kill you!” Your are now a few yards back from behind cover moving in a manner that allows you to keep an eye on the adver-sary, yet will force him to move around the vehicle to get to you if he chooses to continue his charge.

Your adversary seemingly undeterred continues his charge and begins to round the vehicle in a parabola as you continue to egress out and away from the vehicle and simultaneously flip the switch, ready to kill and solidly in condition red.

As your adversary clears the corner of the vehicle, while still moving you use reflexive combative fire

from about 5 yards as you ruthlessly and rapidly shoot two shots to the center of your adversary’s chest and immediately begin to raise your hand-

gun for a failure to stop when you notice that your adversary is dropping. Without stopping, you simul-taneously and instinctively change your vector again, moving off the line of your adversary’s course of travel, stepping sharply and smartly to the side back towards the vehicle as you notice the adversary crumpling only a few feet away.

As you continue to move around the vehicle, you once again resume pulsing to secure your per-sonal sphere again. Moving towards the front of the vehicle, you make the decision to move a few more car lengths away while pulsing an ever-expanding sphere as you move.

As you reach your chosen position behind another vehicle approximately 20 yards from the downed ad-versary, and while behind your newly chosen cover and concealment, you begin your combat breathing, and while keeping an accessible line of sight to your adversary, you begin your contact drills combining them with your combat breathing in order to slow your heart rate, wrestling your mind from the mid-brain back to the forebrain. You realize that you have been shooting and as a precaution you conduct a speed reload to ensure your handgun is fully topped off and ready for more action.

You have completed two of the three phases of your contact drills when at this point you realize that your hands are shaking, a by-product of an adrenaline dump, and you focus your efforts on your proper and deeper combat breathing techniques. You continue with the third phase of your contact drills and you now realize that you are secure and both your peripheral vision and hearing are returning fully, giving you the sense of relief and easing you into an uneasy calm.

Now more in control by managing your SNS re-sponse and regained your senses you continue to secure a broad sphere about you with slowing and ever wider pulses. You now reach into your support side pocket in order to withdraw your cellphone, in order to communicate with the authorities.

With shaky fingers you easily dial 911, press the send button, and when the operator answers you issue a short and concise statement that which gives out only the basic and necessary facts in a memo-rized SITREP format that you have practiced numer-ous times during your Reality Based Training or RBT scenarios, many of which were eerily similar to this real life event.

After the facts have been reported (who, what, where, when, why), EMS requested, and the state-ment of your desire to press charges against your adversary has been made you hang up, then dial your lawyer, all the while thankful that you have faced this same situation enough times in your RBT training to make the experience old hat to you, something you now realize can only be accom-plished by proper training, not just academic knowl-edge and traditional learning/training methods.

You have faced death and emerged triumphant, liv-ing to face another glorious day, your time and effort in training for reality have paid off, unlike so many other unfortunate souls who have either wound up dead, scarred for life, or in jail.

The Pulse Engine is fueled by concepts, tech-niques and principles. Concepts are intellectual in nature and are studied and mastered. Techniques are physical in nature and are trained and mastered. Principles are tactical building blocks that apply concepts and techniques. Pulse Engine concepts, techniques and principles are briefly described be-low and most have further explanation either in the Strategy, Tactics and Drills Manuals and online in the Pulse O2DA Armory.

CONCEPTS

2.1.1 Maneuver Theory (concept)

Maneuver Theory is the military concept of conflict that advocates attempting to defeat an adversary by incapacitating their decision making process (OODA Loop) through shock and disruption brought about by intelligent, purposeful, and timely movement. For an in-depth discussion of this concept, please refer to the Pulse O2DA Strategic Manual.

2.1.2 OODA Loop (concept)

The Decision Making Process can be seen as a time-competitive observation-orientation-decision-action cycle or ‘OODA Loop.’ Each party to a conflict be-gins by observing. He observes himself, his physi-cal surroundings, and his enemy. On the basis of his observation, he orientates; that is to say, he makes a mental image or snapshot of his situation and under-stands the role he holds in it (what if any influence he can have in the situation). On the basis of this ori-entation, he makes a decision. He puts the decision into effect (he acts), and then, because he assumes his action has changed the situation, he observes again, and starts the process anew. His actions fol-

low this cycle, sometimes called the ‘Boyd Cycle’ or the OODA Loop.

To win any conflict, you need to get inside the adver-sary’s OODA Loop (their decision making process). You can either go through the OODA Loop cycle fast-er than your opponent, or you can vary your tempos and rhythms so your opponent cannot keep up with you.”

For example: when someone has a weapon malfunc-tion and needs to pause momentarily to think about what should be done, or when he clears a malfunc-tion improperly, he expands his OODA Loop. When someone has made the decision to flip the switch, and then waits for his adversary to react to his ac-tions, he is expanding his OODA Loop.

Conversely, when someone has a weapon malfunc-tion and reflexively clears a malfunction properly, he shrinks his OODA Loop. And, when someone has made the decision to flip the switch, and then im-mediately and ruthlessly attacks his adversary and begins shaping the situation to suit his own desires, he is shrinking his OODA Loop while expanding and unraveling his adversaries decision making process.

Furthermore, the concept of observing, orienting, deciding, and acting can be trained to such a fine point (ingrained at the unconscious competent level) and compressed to such a short time that the lines blur and start to blend together into what appears one single observation/orientation and decision/action, this concept is what we refer to as an OODA PULSE.

Herein lies the raw power that you will be experienc-ing during your training with us. We will teach you

simple, and reliable techniques which will give you skills that are easily learnable and adaptable. Tech-niques that quickly become second nature and blend into your body’s natural reaction to high stress events like lethal force encounters. Through our unique and proprietary training methodology you will learn and apply these concepts and techniques both on the range and during your RBT scenarios where you will see and feel the power of the Pulse Engine as you mold these techniques to become uniquely your own.Note: As mentioned previously, we are not attempt-ing to give you a formula to memorize in order to win. What is important is that you understand that you must cause your opponent to react to you, and not vice-versa. Once you have gained the initiative, you must keep pressing until you have destroyed your ad-versary’s ability to be a threat.

2.1.3 Task Triad (concept)

Is made up of three components; killing enabling, skill mastery, and stress inoculation, which are the foun-dational building blocks that must be solidly in place to give the fighter the greatest chances for decisive victory during a lethal force encounter. The stronger and more balanced these components are, the more you stack the odds in your favor.

It is important to note that while the three sides to the task triangle are unique, there are a myriad of direct and indirect connections that are directly linked, and whether they are implicitly or explicitly linked, they are all relevant to making a holistic and capable fighter. These concepts are what we call endosymbiotic, that is to say that they can not be separated without great-ly weakening and potentially destroying the whole.

The first arm - skill mastery, is something most shoot-ers do practice to varying degrees. Skill often relates to the physical attributes of speed, accuracy, and the ability to safely and appropriately manipulate your firearm so you can keep it up and running. Skill also relates to the mental and physical attributes of tactics and techniques as well.

The second arm - stress inoculation, is where things start to degrade somewhat for most shooters. Stress focuses on both the internal and external factors or-ganic to the fighter; this is where adrenaline, your sympathetic nervous systems reactions, techniques, confidence, new experiences, and proximity come into play. As the stress levels rise in direct propor-tion to the level of perceived danger, the average per-sons ability to function both mentally and physically quickly and dramatically deteriorates the higher they are stressed.

The third arm - violence enabling, is where the wheels fall off for the average person during a lethal force en-counter, and in my opinion this is the single most im-portant factor that a person who wants to protect him-self and his loved ones MUST absolutely possess. Frankly, without the ability to instantly and ruthlessly inflict violence on your adversary (the willingness to kill), all of your other skills, knowledge, and equip-ment become completely useless.

Unfortunately, one can not learn the latter two (stress inoculation and violence enabling) at a live fire range, as no amount of shooting inert paper, plastic, or steel targets will gain you the knowledge, skills, and abili-ties you will need to shore up the task triad. The only way to gain these invaluable assets is through a qual-ity reality based training program.

2.1.4 Lethality Curve (concept)

Can be measured and graphed by tracking the ele-ments of time, and one’s interaction/isolation with one’s environment. The sharper the parabola (as-cending and descending) the more effective your ac-tions are against your adversary, and the less effec-tive your adversaries actions will be.

2.1.5 Color Code (concept)

A generalization used for the level of mental aware-ness, mental arousal, and mental preparedness for a lethal force encounter expressed in the colors white, yellow, orange, red, and black.

White = Unawares of surroundings, and unprepared for a fight for life.

Yellow = Relaxed awareness of surroundings, and preparing to move up the aggression scale if neces-sary.

Orange = Heightened level of awareness, keying in on specific events/activities, while maintaining situ-ational awareness and moving into a mental posture that is gearing up for a fight, where you are mentally setting the parameters for taking action.

Red = High level of situational awareness where the previous mental triggers for action have been tripped and you begin to take action.

Black = The condition one finds themselves in if they have failed to maintain situational awareness. The color code has an endosymbiotic and direct link to the decision making process, which should be un-derstood.

2.1.6 Threat Assessment (concept)

A process of assessing immediate or future threats to an individual, family, or team. Generally threat as-sessments take a look at and prepare one for imme-diate, short, mid, and long term threats.

Threat assessments force us to take a realistic look at our vulnerabilities and compare them against the potential for an adversaries opportunity, capability, and payoff factors, with the objective of identifying potential threats, discriminating between realistic and unrealistic scenarios, and reducing exposure to those behaviors that may invite an attack, eliminating immediate threats, or de-escalation non-lethal force threats.

Threat assessments take on many forms and cover numerous situations and time frames:Immediate threat assessments usually revolve around the here and now, focusing on target discrimination, target identification, target selection, target elimina-tion, and/or de-escalation of potential threats.

Short-term threat assessments consider any im-promptu events, and take into account factors such as travel time, routs (to and from venue), exposure, environment (personnel and physical), as well as any venue considerations (such as lighting, parking, exits, etc).

Mid and long-term threat assessments may add to the above factors such elements as personal, busi-ness, and family routines; medical considerations (medications, etc.); available ingress, egress, and al-ternate routs (both to and from venues, as well as the venues themselves); actions (well as rehearsal of) on contact, and a plan to shore up and mitigate any un-

necessary exposure, while maximizing safer alterna-tives and lifestyles.

2.1.7 Shock Triad (concept)

Consists of the three elements of surprise, speed, and violence of action, that when properly employed allow one to immediately seize the initiative, driving one’s opponents adversary down the lethality curve while simultaneously thrusting one’s vector up the le-thality curve.

For instance: If you act quickly and reasonably with an unexpected action that surprises our adversary (interrupts his thoughts/plans for you, thereby caus-ing him to react to you), and you do so while imparting maximum violence (real physical trauma) at every op-portunity (which will causes your adversaries actions to be less effective the more you damage them), then we will be imparting shock into our adversaries mind.

2.1.8 Cover and Concealment (concept)

The situationally appropriate techniques used to maximize and leverage the benefits of one’s own cover/concealment while using those techniques to minimize your adversaries leverage.

Most of the time this will mean that you will be ma-neuvering in a manner that allows you to utilize both cover and concealment to either obscure or give your movements ambiguity, as well a providing yourself with additional ballistic protection, while denying the benefit to your adversary.

This essentially means that you will be using simple geometric angles in aiding you to shield yourself both from visual as well as ballistic threats.

2.1.9 SNS Management (concept)

The conscious and willful act of regulating the Sym-pathetic Nervous System in order to regain control of your body and mind before, during, and after a lethal force encounter via the technique of Combat Breath-ing.

During a high stress event our body has a tendency to cause an adrenaline dump courtesy of the Sympa-thetic Nervous System response, and this adrenaline dump can cause many adverse effects (lid lift, tunnel vision, fixation, etc.)

By managing the SNS responce via combat breath-ing technique you can literally override the physio-logical and psychological affects of this SNS caused adrenaline dump.

Combat breathing is a simple 4-step process:

1. Take a deep breath in through the nose, deep into the lower part of the lungs, for a four count

2. Hold that deep breath for a four count

3. Breath out through the mouth as you exhale from the lower lungs first, for a four count

4. Hold your deflated lungs for a four count

Repeat as necessary.

It is important to note that this technique is not a mag-ic mantra that will work simply by repeating it. You must focus on the technique consciously; you must say it, think it and perform it consciously to have it work effectively.

To walk yourself through the process repeat the fol-lowing in your mind as you accurately follow your own directions: “Breath in through the nose, two, three four. Hold, two, three, four. Out through the mouth, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four. And in through the nose, two three four…”

This technique is so effective in lowering the SNS re-action and reducing stress, that we highly encourage you to practice it every time you fire your handgun and conduct the Contact Drills. Additionally, Col. Da-vid Grossman says that every time you hear a siren and every time you find yourself in a potential high stress situation you should begin to combat breath.

Remember; proper practice makes perfect, and every opportunity you practice properly is the faster you will make the practice become an unconscious habit.

2.1.10 SIT REP (concept)

(Communicate with Authorities): A systematic ap-proach to proper situational reporting (SITREP) via. SNS Management immediately after a lethal force encounter, which allows the fighter to report only those facts relevant to the situation in order to protect his future from unnecessary trials and litigation.

As an example, a proper SITREP to authorities would sound something like this:

911 operator: “911, what is the nature of your emer-gency?”

You: “I want to report that an armed man broke into my house and threatened me with a weapon, I was in fear for my life and I was forced to shoot him. Please send the police and an ambulance, and let the police

know I want to press charges against the man for at-tempted murder.”

2.1.11 Initiative (concept)

In the tactical arena, initiative is the freedom of action; the ability to chose ones course of action from all the available options.

Our goal is always to either begin with and keep the initiative, or wrestle it away from our adversary at the first opportunity, thus giving ourselves more options while limiting our adversaries options and isolating him.

By keeping the initiative - remaining the causal factor in our adversaries life - and driving the attack, we are not only keeping all of our options open, we are creat-ing more options as we continue to effect change and keeps our adversary in a reactive state.

2.1.12 Personal Sphere (concept)

Is an imaginary and adaptive sphere of personal space that exists around the fighter, which he is intent on securing (whenever and to whatever extent practi-cal) in order to maximize his situational awareness and thus, his security.

Think about your personal sphere by imagining your-self in the center of a circle that has a seven yard radius (about one and a half car lengths). You want to be cognisant of - and to the maximum extent possible - control the space in this circle. In certain situations it might also mean looking vertically, up and down - like in a stairwell, or up to a roof or balcony - so now this imaginary two dimensional “circle” becomes a three dimensional “bubble” or sphere.

Now, imagine a mark at the 12:00 position (straight ahead) and the 4:00 and 8:00 positions (over your shoulders) on your circle as well. As you are walking down the street you are going to check your 12, 4, and 8 positions randomly and periodically to monitor your personal space. Or, in other words, you are go-ing to “pulse” your personal sphere to make sure all is well, in the same way radar pulses or pings for any threats.

The frequency of your pulsing is dependent upon the activity that is taking place: Walking at a leisurely pace in your own neighborhood during the day might require a pulse every moment or so, however walk-ing back to your car at 2:00 a.m. in the morning in a sketchy section of town might require a pulse every few seconds, the frequency of the pulsing is all situ-ational dependent.

Think about your security bubble again - your per-sonal sphere. We asked you initially to think about 7 yards because most lost gunfights take place within a space of 7 yards or less. But as you move through your day this personal bubble will expand and con-tract based upon the environment you’re in. If you’re in a large empty parking lot your personal bubble may expand to the edges of the parking lot. If you’re in a staircase between floors of an office high rise your bubble may compress to the few feet on either side of you, if you are in an elevator you may be lucky to get a few inches. The key here is that you are always pulsing your personal bubble in order to be situation-ally aware of your surroundings.

TECHNIQUES

2.2.1 Vectoring (technique)

Is a change in one’s positioning (mental and physical) in order to cause your adversary to become reactive with the intent of seizing the initiative in the devel-oping situation. Vectoring often consists of, moving, shooting, and communicating which are key element in Maneuver Warfare/theory.

Examples of mental vectoring would be shifting from yellow to orange, and orange to red. Physical vector-ing would include moving to cover and shooting on the move.

One could vector all three simultaneously; you could have psychologically have moved into condition red, and while drawing your handgun you may be moving to cover and shouting to your adversary, your partner, or innocents in the area.

Cover and concealment are the two considerations that will be taken in to account by the fighter in order to gain him a physical advantage in maintaining phys-ical distance of his choosing, while avoiding incoming fire, thereby gaining leverage over his adversary.

Cover will stop an incoming projectile and conceal-ment will only serve to hide you from your adversary. A big boulder, cement pillars, and engine blocks can provide cover if properly utilized, whereas most fur-niture, walls, and vehicle body’s will at best give you some form of concealment.

2.2.2 Ammunition Management (technique)

The timely employment of techniques that facilitate the feeding of ammunition into your firearm in order to ensure that you either do not run out of ammuni-tion at an inappropriate time, or to reload in a man-ner that reduces the amount of time that the firearm is less than fully primed and for deployment.

For an in-depth discussion of these techniques, please refer to the Pulse O2DA Drills Manual, which covers this subject for handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

2.2.3 Testing for Compliance (technique)

A series of verbal commands and physical articula-tions that both clearly communicate your intent while assessing a potential target for compliance.

It is important to note that having the time to both challenge and test for compliance is a luxury that is not always available to the operator, as the natural tendency of lethal conflict is to gain the upper hand immediately. That is to say, if your adversary is even marginally skilled, his desire will be to ambush you in a manner that does not allow you time to challenge or test for compliance.

None the less, learning how to challenge and test for compliance can go a long way in gaining the initiative, as well as helping you in your target identification and selection should the situation permit.

2.2.4 Combative Fire (technique)

Consists of the two techniques of reflexive and com-bative sighted fire.

In combative sighted fire, all the extraneous (and time consuming) elements are removed, leaving only those techniques needed to guarantee one’s hits on an appropriate target of one’s choosing, with combat accuracy.

Combative reflexive fire mirrors the combative sighted fire technique in that the firearm presentation is iden-tical (follows the same physical and neural pathways as combative sighted fire), yet one is not attempting to establish a sight picture (as is most often taught), nor is one attempting to “index” the sights.

Regardless of the technique selected, the process of selection is both instantaneous and appropriate to the situation, and will allow you to consistently and rapid-ly eliminate the threat, even if higher SNS responses have been reached.

2.2.5 Contact Drills (technique)

A general reference to a series of a three phase technique that is employed with specific pulse pat-terns which are sent out in order to regain situational awareness and security of one’s personal sphere im-mediately following a fight for life.

Contact drills, like all other techniques are situation-ally dependent for both the time and to what extent that they will be employed.

2.2.6 Firearms Manipulations (technique)

A generic term used to describe the techniques used in order to keep your firearm up and running by both managing the ammunition supply and quickly and ef-ficiently clearing any malfunctions that may occur, be-fore, during, and after the fight.

Firearms manipulations include techniques such as chamber checks, proper loading and unloading, re-loads, and malfunction clearances.

For an in-depth discussion of these techniques, please refer to the Pulse O2DA Drills Manual, which covers the subject for handguns, rifles, and shotguns

2.2.7 Flipping the Switch (technique)

The mental act of either switching from a social and communicative being to a violent being (usually fol-lowing the realization that the time for communicating has ended and the time for swift, and ruthless vio-lence has begun), or gearing down from violence to a communicative being.

There is a point in assessing a potential lethal force encounter where you must realize that there is noth-ing more to do than to immediately and decisively stop the potential threat (thereby probably killing it). If this realization comes too late or not at all, you or a loved one could be killed or seriously harmed without you ever putting up a real fight.

When talking about the effective use of lethal force, you must understand first and foremost that your ac-tions will most likely lead to the death of another hu-man being, and in order to fight effectively, you must learn how to efficiently and ruthlessly kill and make peace with this reality well before the fight. Because if you don’t have the will to kill instantaneously, you will be a target waiting to be killed.

The hesitation to kill when necessary comes from a lack of training and a lifetime of over-socialization, and the only way to break through the wall of over-

socialization is to train for the reality of a lethal force encounter via Reality Based Training scenarios.

As dramatic as this may sound, it’s a fact. It’s not a pleasant thing to say, and it is even less pleasant to actually perform, yet if it goes unstated, we are set-ting you up for failure. This isn’t hyperbole, this is the cold hard truth that both science and statistics point to.

At the point you finally realize that there is nothing left to say, nothing left to communicate, and that you must now fight, you have reached a point where in your mind you must decisively and ruthlessly inflict violence into your adversary.

We call the point in time when communication ceases and violence is necessary “flipping the switch” and learning how to truly flip that switch is a key to saving innocent life.

While the specific signals can be different for exact situations, it becomes easier to recognize it the more you train with realistic scenarios in your RBT. It is at this point of flipping the switch that you draw upon another being inside you, one that will stop at nothing to protect innocent life by destroying another.

At Pulse O2DA you will learn when and how to flip your switch so that you will decisively win that fight for life. Through realistic RBT scenarios and our pro-prietary training techniques, we give you the tools to conquer the challenges that come up in a lethal force encounter.

While you may not yet fully understand flipping the switch, what you need to know right now is: when you recognize that communications will not work and that

you will need to fight to save lives, you must do so unreservedly and commit all of your effort and focus on your adversary in order destroy him.

2.2.8 Proper Presentation (technique)

Proper Presentation: The act of drawing or present-ing a weapon at the appropriate time and in a manner that does not place one behind in the decision making process: The fastest “draw” is to have the firearm in your hands the instant before you need it.

2.2.9 Pulsing (technique)

The act of forcing Boyd’s decision making process (OODA Loop) onto one’s environment in order to gain and maintain situational awareness (directly linked to the color code yellow). Think of a radar pulse and a returning ping to visualize this concept.

The frequency and strength of pulses sent out will be appropriate for the circumstances at hand.

Strictly speaking, pulsing an OODA Pulse are not identical. The technical separator between pulsing and OODA Pulsing is physical action.

In pulsing you are passively taking in the information gathered from your observation and orientation, and you will allow the non-threatening events to simply flow over you. Event thought full OODA loops are present, when no physical action is required, you can be said to be pulsing for incoming information.

Whereas with the OODA Pulse, you are actively en-gaging your adversaries in order to effect change. Think of an OODA Pulse is the trained response of instinctively and instantaneously observing, orienting,

deciding, and acting (carrying out a decision) com-pressed to such a short time that the lines blur and start to blend together into what appears one single observation/orientation and decision/action. Where you pulse from one observation/action to the next without hesitation or conscious thought.

2.2.10 OODA Pulse (technique)

The concept of observing, orienting, deciding, and acting can be trained to such a fine point (ingrained at the unconscious competent level) and compressed to such a short time that the lines blur and start to blend together into what appears one single observation/orientation and decision/action, this concept is what we refer to as an OODA PULSE.

Herein lies the raw power that you will be experienc-ing during your training with us. We will teach you simple, and reliable techniques which will give you skills that are easily learnable and adaptable. Tech-niques that quickly become second nature and blend into your body’s natural reaction to high stress events like lethal force encounters. Through our unique and proprietary training methodology you will learn and apply these concepts and techniques both on the range and during your RBT scenarios where you will see and feel the power of the Pulse Engine as you mold these techniques to become uniquely your own.

2.2.11 Moving/Shooting Platform (technique)

A series of techniques used to balance and stabilize the human body during the firing of a firearm while moving (a key element in maneuver). The shooting platform allows one to shoot with combat efficiency, while both moving towards cover/concealment and becoming a more difficult target to hit.

2.2.12 Target I.D (technique)

The act of assessing and prioritizing potential threats for engagement and/or elimination.

During this press you will determine which adversary presents the greatest threat to you, and then you will prioritize the targets accordingly.

The criteria for target I.D.ing will include many fac-tors, but primarily look at what type of weapons the adversary possesses, the distance of your adversary, and his posture.

For instance, a man with a shotgun at 15-yards who is about to shoot you is probably a greater immediate threat than his partner who is now running at you with a knife from a distance of 10-yards.

Conversely, if the man with the shotgun was in the middle of a reload, and his partner were running to-wards you from 10-yards, you may want to consider dealing with the knife wielding individual first.

There are a number of simple tweaks that can be made in the above scenario, each of which could cause one to prioritize one target above another, again, there is no magic formula, as addressing real life threats is a matter of receiving sufficient RBT sce-nario training that will allow you to make those split second decisions based on real life experiences, not just academic knowledge.

2.3 PRINCIPLES

2.3.1 The principle of scrutiny (principle)

Think of this principle as the holistic color code of mental awareness. Using the principle of scrutiny, you will be utilizing all of your senses to observe your surroundings.

2.3.2 The principle of brutality (principle)

One of the most important tactical principal that we want to drive into your soul is this: The most impor-tant tool in your tactical tool bag is your intellect and willingness to decisively and instantaneously deploy violence in the most ruthless manner available to you once you have determined that violence is the appropriate action.

2.3.3 The principle of instantaneity (principle)

This principle works hand in hand with the principle of brutality. It is precisely the ability to do something unexpected immediately, which brings about surprise and causes a reaction in your adversary, thereby snatching the advantage of initiative for yourself. By mixing the speed of instantaneity with surprising violence you generate shock in your adversary. This is at the very heart of the Pulse methodology.

2.3.4 The principle of reality (principle)Understand that things in life are the way that they are, not the way that you might like or wish for them to be, and then build your paradigms on the solid foundation of reality, not fantasy.

2.3.5 The principle of duality (principle)

Understand that most principles and techniques explained in this manual have two sides that can be exploited to your advantage depending on where you find yourself in the tactical situation. As with most things in life, these tactical principles have give and take; that is you are gaining something while at the same time you losing something in the process.

2.3.6 The principle of plurality (principle)

It is always better to have more (and properly trained) fighters coordinating their efforts with you than it is to attempt doing something by yourself. Conversely, unless you are sending people out as sacrificial sheep, cannon fodder, or decoys, it is better to be by yourself than working with a poorly trained individual.

2.3.7 The principle of moving tactically (principle)

Which is using a broad brush stroke to state that your movement should fit your situation. Many times you will want to move stealthfully (swift, silent, and deadly), and sometimes you may not have the luxury nor desire due to the situation.

2.3.8 The principle of eventuality (principle)

Simply states that we will only prioritize our time, invest into and prepare for what we truly believe we have a reasonable chance of facing in our lives.
