    PROMOTIONMORFITT SMITH

As the dedicated runners were tackling Ecclesall Road onthe Sheffield Half Marathons new route last month, another newcomer to Banner Cross was also making itsmark.

Independent estate agent Morfitt Smith, established inHillsborough in the summer of 2013, opened its brand newoffice on that same Sunday and is already drawing interest fromhomeowners and landlords alike.

Because, as well as a superb sales service for which thebusiness has become renowned all over the city, the newbranch also offers a specialist lettings service.

As the rental market continues to grow, there is a hugedemand for landlords and hot rental properties are nothanging around for long. But its not just existing landlords whocan benefit. If you are considering letting a property forinvestment or as an alternative to selling, Morfitt Smith canoffer excellent advice on how to become a successful landlord.

The new branch isnt the only exciting news that MorfittSmith has announced this year. They were also proud to havebeen shortlisted in the Best Estate Agent in Yorkshire andHumberside category at the prestigious 2015 ESTAs (Estate andLetting Agent Awards), held at Hilton Park Lane in London. Ahighly commendable feat for a business established less thantwo years ago. But when you consider all that John Morfitt andhis talented team have done since first launching on

Middlewood Road, its clearto see why they haveattracted such praise.

Priding themselves ontheir personal touch, theyare determined to find theright client for the righthome, rather than simplyselling or letting a property without a second thought. Theyknow that choosing an estate agent to sell or rent your home isa big decision and go out of their way to ensure the entireprocess is as stress-free as possible.

Combining traditional old-fashioned values with modernpractices, they offer the best service possible. Theircomprehensive website and active social media accounts areexcellent resources for sellers, buyers and landlords. Vendorshave their own login details and online personal file so they cankeep track of developments in their sale. And buyers can createa wish list, which can be changed at any time, putting them incontrol of the house buying experience.

Morfitt Smith is one local company on the up and is lookingforward to a bright future. To see how they can help you, andfor more information on selling or letting your property, donthesitate to contact them via the details below.

Sheffield GlazingFor an affordable solution to mistyWindows, call Sheffield Glazing. OwnerGraham Warsop has more than 30years experience in the industry andhas worked on both themanufacturing and installation sidesof the business. Now specialising ininstallation, he knows this industryinside out and is proud to offerfantastic products at very reasonableprices.

After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of glass in a doubleglazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect, explains Graham. When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or soundproofing and heat loss can become a big problem.

Graham fits the latest energy efficient glass into existing frames of any size, whichcan save people a lot of money. The Pilkington KS glass sealed units fitted asstandard are argon gas filled and manufactured to BSI standard.

He also carries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect of glazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patio door units.

With summer just around the corner, now is thetime for our thoughts to turn to the garden andour lawns in particular. Is your lawn looking asgreen, healthy and weed free as it should?

If the grass is lacklustre, perhaps with unsightly barepatches or clumps of weeds or moss, then the chancesare your lawn needs some TLC.

But if the idea of going to the DIY store, buyingpreparations and spending precious time over theweekend putting down feed-and-weed products on yourlawn does not appeal, then help is at hand.

GreenThumb are lawn care experts who will keep yourlawn looking healthy and green for less than it wouldcost you to do the job yourself.

Our pictures taken just weeks apart show how inonly a short time a patchy lawn can be transformed intoa lush, green sward with no weeds.

GreenThumbs value-for-money lawn treatments startat just 16 for a small garden and the average treatmentis only 22.

We can also help your lawn stay greener during hotsummers, tackle pests or diseases that attack grass andgive your grass the best chance of avoiding moss in thewinter.

Picture the scene: youre in the pub with your friends on aFriday night and someone asks what youre planning to dowith your Saturday. Your answer most probably will notbe that, on the spur of the moment, youll be trekking more than20 miles from the heart of the Peak District to the very same pubyoure currently sitting in. But then, youre not Chris Blantern.

It was back in 1996 that Chris and a group of mates whoregularly met at the Acorn Inn in Burncross decided to tackle thismost unlikely challenge, all in the name of charity. It was onlywhen the 14 walkers had completed what would become knownas the Acorn Amble, and were enjoying their fair share ofcelebratory pints afterwards, that they garnered interest from somany other pub regulars that they decided to continue thetradition the following year. Apart from 2001, when the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak caused the event to be cancelled, it hastaken place every year since.

Sheffield Childrens Hospital Charity benefitted from the 1,300worth of donations in response to that very first walk and, to date,a grand total of 95,870.34 has been raised for a variety of localand national charities. This year, the walk takes place on 6 June andtheyre hoping to break the 100,000 barrier.

Never in a million years did I think wed raise this much, saysChris incredulously. We were just a group of guys from the pubthat went for a walk and now some years were oversubscribed!

Its an early start on the Saturday morning as up to 80 walkershead to the Acorn Inn for around 6.30am. A troop of volunteers including a group from Chris company Hi-Point Access Limited then ferries them over to Castleton to begin the walk in earnest ataround 7.30am. The route travels via very pleasant terrain down toEdale, past Ladybower, to Low Bradfield, up to High Bradfield andover to Oughtibridge before reaching the Acorn Inn by mid-to-lateafternoon.

For those not able to complete the full 22 miles, there is an

It started as a spur-of-the-moment idea in the pub, but the Acorn Amble now attracts hordes of charity walkers and is set to reach a very special milestone.

  • option to be picked up or dropped off bythe back-up team at one of the threecheckpoints along the way Ladybower,Low Bradfield (which includes baconbutties at The Plough) and The Pheasantin Oughtibridge. However, theres anunspoken rule that everyone must walkthe final stretch down Bracken Hill towards the Acorn Inn as thewalkers are cheered back in to an amazing atmosphere.

The challenge is helped enormously by the supportive brewerythat owns the pub, Greene King, and all the staff and managerswho have pitched in over the years. Current manager AmyGrayhurst, who took the reins last Christmas, is even joining in thetrek herself this year.

The back-up team (otherwise known as the unofficial AcornAmble committee) is also invaluable. Currently comprising aroundeight or nine volunteers, they ensure the event is a success yearafter year and keep the organisation rigid. Walkers are given anumber on the day and a pack which contains a map of the routeand the phone numbers of the back-up team in case they get intodifficulty. Every walker is counted out at Castleton and countedback in at the pub and the back-up team doesnt rest untileveryone is back safely with a pint in their hand.

Last month, eager to spread their fundraising wings beyond thewalk itself, they held a charity evening at the pub with a raffle, complimentary bar snacks and an auction. The event raised 1,000and was attended by the Lord Mayor, councillor Peter Rippon, whose charity Sheffield Carers Centre, along with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Support UK), will benefit this year.

Auction items kindly donated by local businesses included asigned SWFC shirt, SUFC tickets, memorabilia signed by OneDirections Louis Tomlinson, a central heating boiler service byChapeltown Gas, high street shopping vouchers, a meal at TheWortley Arms, a meal for two at Napoleons Casino Owlerton,

tickets for Lord of the Dance at Sheffield City Hall,Manor Operatic tickets and many more.

The last couple of years have set high standardsas 6,500 was raised for Bluebell Wood ChildrensHospice last year and 7,600 for Macmillan CancerSupport in 2013. Each year, the walkers nominatenational or local causes and the charity is decided by a group vote at a publicisedcommittee meeting.

How much we raise depends on the charitywere raising money for that year, says Russ Kelly,

who has been involved in the walk eitherby taking part or as a back-up team member since he moved to Burncross from HighGreen. Charities such as Bluebell Wood,MacMillan Cancer Support and St LukesHospice, which we raised 10,000 for in 2010,have done very well because theyre wellknown and close to a lot of peoples hearts.

And when Russ says that people reallymake an event of it, hes not kidding. Peoplehave often sported fancy dress costumesover the years but, in 2013, a group of guystook it one step further. Snow White and her

seven dwarves were quite a sight to behold as they made theirway through the countryside stopping at almost every pub theycame across along the way.

Clearly, you dont have to be a seasoned marathon runner tocomplete the walk, but a certain standard of fitness is expected. We say its a walk in the park the Peak District National Park, jokes Chris.

Im hoping younger people will start getting on board. Im 55 soIve got another five years I reckon. One local guy, Stuart Marsden, who has done about 90 per cent of the walks, is in his mid-60s now.He once got back at the unbelievable time of 1pm.

Though, fortunately, there have never been any accidents, thewalks havent been without a bit of drama. In 2011, one groupwent the wrong way and got 12 miles towards Manchester whenthey had to be rescued by Russ and taken to Low Bradfield, wherethey completed the rest of the walk. Technically, they did all themiles, they just didnt do the correct route, says Russ. Ironically, thechosen charity was Yorkshire Air Ambulance though thankfullyhe saved them from having to use the service.

This community event is open to all but places are limited. To getinvolved, register your details by filling in a form at the Acorn Innor by emailing back-up team member Jonathan Jones [email protected], and then start fundraising! No minimumamount is required, everyone is simply asked to raise as much asthey can. Maybe the local pub on a Friday night would be a goodplace to start?

Never in a million yearsdid I think wed raise thismuch. We were just agroup of guys from thepub that went for a walkand now some yearswere oversubscribed!

  • PULSEMUSIC

For one week each summer,a quaint North Sheffieldvillage transforms into abustling hub for classicalmusicians, composers, singersand the hundreds of peoplewho come to see them perform.

The reason? Bradfield Festivalof Music, the history of whichcan be traced back to the early19th century. Since its modernrevival in 1998, the week-longevent has welcomed thousandsof classical music enthusiastsfrom across the country.

From Saturday 20 to Saturday27 June this year, the medievalGrade I listed Parish Church ofSt Nicholas in High Bradfield

will once again provide aspectacular setting for the

festival, with world-classacts making the most ofthe 900-year-oldbuildings excellentacoustics.

Its a unique settingwith a unique sound, says festival secretary

Keith Hoyland. We dont use any amplification so all you hear ispure sound with the acoustics of the church. Our president JulianLloyd Webber always says theres nowhere better on earth to playwhen the church is full.

For the past two years, an impressive 90 per cent turnout hasensured the 300-strong audiences at each of the seven concertsenjoy this optimum sound. The intimate venue, where artists playjust a couple of feet from the front row, enhances the atmosphereeven further and people often comment on how wonderful it is toexperience the performances away from vast concert halls. Its littlewonder, then, that the festival continues to go from strength tostrength.

What began as a platform for local and amateur musicians hasgrown greatly in confidence and now features the industrysinternationally acclaimed stars. Having established good contactswith renowned music agents, and pitching years in advance fortop performers, the festival organisers are able to secure sometruly outstanding acts.

Sometimes people dont believe that we get the artists we get especially Classic Brit Awards winners who we have year by year, says Keith proudly. Julian works as a talent spotter and gives mean early heads-up about people who are likely to be coming intothe limelight those who are at the start of their career andmaking leaps and bounds into the classical music industry.

Weve already booked most of our artists for 2016 and 2017and my favourite part of the festival is trying to introduce newartists to Sheffield as many have never been to the area before.

Its this kind of thinking that sees artists such asRomanian/Nigerian pianist Rebeca Omordia (Justins

    PULSEEDUCATION

What makes good writing?Kip McGraths David Kayeexplains

How many adults, let alone children, find writing difficult? Why do we make so many mistakes? How can weimprove our writing?

Writing is a creative process and we have to be active in it.There are many elements, including handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, syntax and the organisationof ideas. All of these must be mastered if any sense is to bemade, but it is quite a list to get through.

Many times as a teacher, I have encountered childrenlearning higher-order punctuation when they cannot reliablyuse a capital letter or full stop. I have observed young writersattempting longer pieces when they are unable to form asimple sentence.

The first step to good writing is speaking. If a child is unableto speak clearly with meaning, they will not be able to write. Itis worth considering what sort of speaking and listeninghappens in the home. Is it passive listening in front of atelevision? Is talk in the home of a functional nature, forexample: Come downstairs, tea is ready?

Talk for writing needs to be rich so try discussing somethingtopical. Always encourage open conversation and try to modelit as accurately as possible. Children should be made aware ofpoor grammar, slang and dialect.

A child who is able to speak clearly, with good grammar anda wide vocabulary, will be in an excellent position to write well.

This leaves us with the mechanics of writing: handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Of these three, most people will findspelling the most difficult. This is not surprising as we have somany exceptions to our spelling rules.

For each aspect of writing, time and practice is needed tofully embed each element. Children spend a large proportion oftheir time in school on writing, yet they are also expected todeal with more elements at an earlier age.

Writing can be improved with more time to reinforce andpractise those elements taught in school so their accurate usebecomes habit. It also requires self-discipline on the part of thewriter so errors are not ignored when editing.
