The Brief

A Puffin 2012/13 competition Brief

To design a contemporary book cover for the Puffin children’s classic story book The Wind in the Willows. The design must be engaging and appeal to a young audience as well as the adults who will purchase the book.

The Concept

The concept of this brief was to create an interactive activity set that would involve young children in colouring in the book cover. An activity set would also come with the book when purchased which will include character masks, colouring in sheets and bookmarks.

Spend a season on the river bank and take a walk on the wildside.

Spring is in the air and Mole has found a wonderful new world. There’s boating with Ratty, a feast with Badger and high jinx on the open road with that reckless ruffian, Mr Toad of Toad Hall.

The four become the firmest of friends, but after Toad’s latest escapade, can they join together and beat the wretched weasels?

The Cover

The book cover has been printed onto 120 gsm cartridge paper with a belly band of the same stock. The reason of choice for the stock is that it has a soft texture to it which works well with the coloured pencils provided to colour it in.

The belly band is coloured in as an example of the concept of the book, which is to colour in. The belly band has been designed to be removed once the book has been purchased.

The Typeface

The typeface used is Arial Rounded MT Bold. The reason for using this typeface was its rounded ends. It is readable

for young children and works well with the style of the

vectored animals.

The Activity Set

The activity set has been printed onto the same stock as the book cover (120 gsm cartridge paper) this is due

to it making good colouring in paper.

The colouring in sheets with the characters on also have

the characters names which means children can learn to spell and write the

names.

The product range comes together well with a consistent design concept.

The interactive reading set could be developed further with an interactive

digital version.

More and more children are playing and learning with digital technology, a proposed idea could include a digital

book where children can have the story read out to them, as well as

interactive games to aid learning to read and be creative.
