Who Should Publish?

! Everyone !

Faculty Members, Researchersand Students

Who in Thailand are publishing?

What about at SUT?

What about at SUT?

What about at SUT?

How could these people publish so many articles?

Mostly through collaborations and team effort!

How could these people publish so many articles?

If it is not a miracle (it is not really),

what are their secrets of success and recipes?

Let’s make a simple analysis!(my personal view in

Why publish?

To let everyone else know what you have done and to give other people a chance to help you improve quality of your work

- How to select journal- Author & Reviewer Communications

Why we need to publish?

- To communicate with other researchers- Record keeping of the knowledge obtained- Let others check/evaluate the results- For other to learn what has been known- Prevent redundant work- For personal promotion ?

When?

ASAP

How do you know? What are required?

It COULD take up to 1 year to be accepted

International JournalsISI Impact Factors

Why international journal?

- Broader audience- In English, accessible to all audience- Has more strict criteria/better referee process- More experts accessing- Generally has a forum for comment/response

How journals are rated? How to rate an individual article? How to rate a person publication record?

- JIF indicate how good the journal is- The higher JIF the better (exponentially better!)- Roughly the JIF value is the number of time an average article in the journal get cited per year- Cannot compare JIF between journal from different fields!- Of course, the higher the JIF, the more difficult to publish in that journal- Getting accepted in high JIF journal does not necessarily mean the work is good

How to rate an individual article?“ A quick way (but not the best) is looking at

the journal the article published in. ”

“ A better way is checking how many times the article is cited by others. ”

However, this takes time. The article has to be published at least two years.

How to

check? The most accurate resource is an international

database such as “Sci. Citation Index”.

In complete, but free!

How to rate a person publication record

“ Again, a quick way is by looking at the journal the articles are published in.

(some time the avg. JIF is used)”

“ A better way is by looking at the lifetime citation record. Recently, another simple yet

effective way is invented Hirsch’s h-index.”

Publish or Perish

Hirsch’s index (h-index)Hirsch writes:

“A scientist has index h if h of his Np papers have at least h citations each, and the other

(Np - h) papers have at most h citations each.”

Hirsch’s index (h-index)

- Find the journal that the specific topic of your work are generally published- Compare your work with average work published in the journal

Tactics

- Prepare a neat and error-free manuscript.- Draw clear with full detailed figures (show that you are dedicated).- Let friends read the manuscript and take comments for revising before submission.- Prepare an easy to read and (a little bit overselling) justification paragraph.- When reply to the referees, use professional and as polite as possible language.- Try to comply as much as possible with the comments.
