Recently I ventured onto Facebook. I have always felt that I just didn’t have the time to deal with that application which seems to be an obsession with the younger crowd. I made this leap so that I could keep tabs on PFC Michael Frey, as he uses Facebook to keep family and friends up to date on his exploits at the Marine base at 29 Palms, CA. When my daughter Kathleen heard that I had opened a Facebook page her comment was something like “Hell must have frozen over”. Now , I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I don’t spend much time on Facebook and rarely “post” anything. However, I did venture over to the NSSA Facebook page and made a “Post” over there. Thank you Sherry Kerr at the NSSA for helping me with that “Post”. We picked up 24 new subscribers

overnight and more each day as people read about the Red Chute Gazette on the NSSA Facebook page. I was amazed. Some of those new subscribers were from Canada, Australia and all across the U. S. To all of our new subscribers we say welcome! We hope you enjoy reading our little magazine and we hope you will come visit one of the clubs you read about here soon. It has been a really harsh Winter and most of us are looking forward to some Spring time weather. Well it is on the way! Debbie and I had the pleasure of making a trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for business and pleasure in February. It is always a blessing when those two things can happen together. I enjoyed shooting at the Sweetheart Open at Coast Rifle & Pistol Club in Biloxi. We had some really good food and got to visit with some really nice people. Skeet folks are always a hospitable bunch and our friends at Coast Rifle & Pistol Club are a prime example. Next weekend I will be visiting the Lafayette Skeet Academy to volunteer in whatever way I can be of assistance to help our friends there put on their annual LSA Youth Shoot which is designed to get youngsters interested in the shooting sports. Many of our readers have volunteered their time to help with that event. See the ad on page 8. In this issue “L.P.” will talk about goal setting. If you interested in getting some professional help with your game, check out the flyer for LP’s Clinic in this issue. Don’t forget our want ads on pages 40 and 41. If you are expecting an income tax refund, you might find something you can’t live without on those pages. If you have something to list, let us know. Want ads are free. Wishin’ you 3 @ 8, I am

Setting The Bar By: Paul “L.P.” Giambrone, III

Often times, shooters find themselves out on the skeet field and have nothing that they are working for; they are just out there firing away and having a good time. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, some shooters wonder why their scores are not as high as they would like…interesting. When Bill Gates decided to create a multi-million dollar company in Microsoft, I don’t think he just woke up one morning and decided that’s what he would do. In other words, Bill had a plan. If you look at anyone who has been successful in anything that they do, more than likely, they had a plan and thought their way through every little detail in order to succeed. What about some of the great athletes out there? They didn’t just wake up one day and decide to be good at whichever sport they chose, they had to put in plenty of hours each day in practice to become what they are today. Each practice was a scheduled and planned event. They had objectives and goals they wanted to reach. So, whether you are a weekend warrior or someone who likes to shoot for fun, there still has to be a plan. With a solid plan in place, I can guarantee your scores will be higher and more consistent than the times you didn’t have a plan or a goal. For example, I was working with some shooters recently and we began to discuss the importance of a pre-shot routine. During my explanation of why the pre-shot routine is so important, it made me realize how important it is to set the bar high. Remember that old saying, “Aim for the stars and if you fall short you are still above the trees?” Why not use that same concept for skeet? Hey, let’s be honest with each other…when do you have the most fun? When you are breaking targets and lots of them! This is why I set my standards so high when preparing for the next station because if I fall a little short, I can probably still get a break even if it is not a dead center hit! However, if my goal was to just casually “break targets” then I wouldn’t be as effective in those moments of being slightly off. In other words, I would miss more often with the bar being set lower rather than having it set high.

Setting The Bar (Continued)

So how can we correct this? It starts with goals and being realistic with those goals. Did you see the key word in that last sentence? REALISTIC! So what is realistic for you as a shooter? Start with examining your practice schedule and how much time you are able to dedicate to the game. Is it realistic for someone that shoots 10 rounds of practice every couple of weeks to go to a major tournament and win a gun championship or the HOA? Probably not going to happen… However, if you take someone that shoots 30-40 rounds per week AND has proper fundamentals (both mentally and mechanically), then that is a realistic expectation. My advice on goal setting is to start with something achievable to keep your confidence high and to be fair to yourself. For example, if you are still relatively new to the sport, perhaps you could set your goal to raise your HOA average by a target or try to match or pass your highest score. If you have been shooting for a while, maybe your goal could be to win your class and/or concurrent at a big shoot this year or perhaps win a major gun championship. These are just simple goals that can be set and can be easily obtained when you have realistic expectations. Some other experienced shooters could want to make the top 10 in their concurrent for high average or make the All-American team. It doesn’t really matter what your goal is, just be realistic with it! To close with goal setting, we have already established the what (meaning what your goal will be for the upcoming season), now let’s establish the when. When is a good time to set your goals? Long before the next season actually starts! My recommendation would be to analyze your previous year as soon as it is over (for most of us that would be some time in October after the World Shoot) and make goals for the next season. This is the perfect time when everything is still fresh in your mind to determine what you would like to do for the following year. It is also important to write these goals down and then store them away until the next year is over. Why? Well if you continually remind yourself of what your goals are, don’t you think that is putting added pressure on yourself? If you had a constant reminder of something, wouldn’t it be constantly on your mind? The last thing you want to have happen is going into a tournament knowing that you need to shoot a certain score in order to achieve the average you want for that year. Next thing you know, you’ll be completely focused on your score rather than executing each individual shot. Speaking of which, the only goal that I set for myself each year is to execute as many shots as I possibly can to the best of my ability. Is it realistic for me to expect to execute every shot

perfectly? Absolutely not! However, if I set the bar very high and try to execute each shot perfectly, I can still break targets even when I am not executing the shot perfectly. Tip of the month: Next time you are at the range, ask yourself after a miss, “How well did I see that target?” or “Was I fully prepared for that shot?” and remember to be honest with yourself!

Dining on The Road In Gulfport, Mississippi

RED CHUTE GAZETTE Page 13

Last February, Debbie and I attended the Sweetheart Shoot at Coast Rifle & Pistol Club near Biloxi, Mississippi. While there Randy Brownlee took us to Rickey’s in Bay St. Louis. We had a fabulous time and we shared that with you in the March issue 2010. This year we were able to make the Sweetheart Shoot again. We did get to go to Ricky’s again on Saturday, but on Friday night Randy and Linda took us to another of their favorite places to dine, Vrazel’s in Gulfport.. Wow! What a treat! Vrazel’s is a family business, owned and operated by Chef William Vrazel, his wife Louise and his children. Randy and Linda have been dining here for years and have their own favorite table. While we dined we were waited on by Vince and Spike who always take good care of the Brownlees. We were visited by Chef Vrazel and his daughter Heather Radix. The service was excellent. The restaurant is located on West Beach Boulevard in Gulfport. The setting is lovely, as you can see in the pictures here. It was completely rebuilt after a hurricane demolished it. The facilities are very nice. The dress is dressy casual, although I am told that some of the nearby casino clientele may lean more to the casual side.

Dining on The Road Vrazel’s Fine Food Restaurant, Gulfport, Mississippi

. Vrazel’s specializes in fresh local seafood, prime beef and chicken. Chef Vrazel puts his distinctive touch to French, Italian and Cajun cuisine. Our food was fabulous. To start we had house salads and fresh baked French bread. That bread was really good and we had to restrain ourselves to make sure we had room for the main course. Randy and I both had Chef Vrazel’s Dish, which was made with fresh gulf shrimp and jumbo lump crabmeat sautéed in a spicy Italian sauce. It is served over your choice of pasta. We had it over linguini. It was delicious. Debbie had Eggplant La Rosa . This dish is prepared with baby gulf shrimp and fresh crabmeat blended with eggplant, herbs, spices and cheese. Those ingredients are topped with parmesan cheese and baked in a dish until golden brown. This one is outstanding.

We had creamed spinach as a side dish. Now that was the best creamed spinach I have ever eaten.

Linda ordered pan seared Flounder with lump crabmeat, which is one of her favorite dishes here. I can see why she likes it. I don’t know how we managed to do it, but we did finish with a brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

. If you are going to be near Gulfport at lunch or dinner time and you are in the mood for fine dining, spend a few hours at Vrazel’s. Their menu is quite extensive and the food and service are excellent. They are open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. Dinner is served from 5 P.M. to 9 P.M. on Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday they stay open until 10 P.M. If you go, please tell Chef Vrazel you read about them in the Red Chute Gazette.

Saturday and Sunday, February 12th - 13th, at Coast Rifle and pistol Club, Biloxi the Good Lord blessed us with great weather and good friends. Now I am certain that Mike Brown, AKA “The Resident Weatherman”, will take all the credit for the weather even though he could not attend due to a much more pending event! With the great weather, we had shooters from the Florida Panhandle to the Monroe, Shreveport and Lafayette, Louisiana areas. There were some that could only shoot Saturday and some that came in for Sunday. This is the beauty of this new format we are using. It gives the shooter a great deal of flexibility. On Saturday we shot 50 each 12 & 20 and 50 pair of doubles in the afternoon. Sunday brought even better weather and better scores. A regular 4 X 50 was shot Sunday. Jeff Sullivan of Jackson took HOA honors with Gregory Duda of Pensacola RU. Jeff Sullivan won 12 and 28 gauge, with Greg Duda winning the 20 and yours truly winning the 410.

The highlight of the weekend was the trip to Rickey’s on Saturday night. We had fifteen folks go and have an enormous meal. And to top it off we had a birthday party for Walter Williams. Better known as WWIII! Now the exact age was never disclosed but Walter stated it was the “Twentieth Anniversary of His Forty-Third Birthday”. So you do the math!! Somehow we managed to eat birthday cake provided by Walter’s Bride, Sandie, even after stuffing ourselves with Ricky’s culinary treats.

On Sunday, we had a great lunch prepared by “Chefs John and Julie are de” of Red beans and sausage with bread and all the dessert you could handle. Many thanks to John and Julie Russell for the great meal. Also many thanks to all who helped referee, load traps and just pitch in to make this a great shoot. Special thanks to Clark for continuing to guide me through the process of shoot administration. We are looking for another date for another MS50 shoot. Hopefully in a couple months. Watch this site for details. Don’t forget the upcoming Second Annual Redfish Open April 1-3. The Redfish looks to be filling up quickly, so make your plans and let me know. We should have our lights up and ready for the Redfish as well. We couldn’t go without giving a huge THANK YOU to Doug and Debbie Frey for providing this great online magazine. The work they do for skeet needs to be praised. Thanks Doug and Debbie!

Randy Brownlee Publishers Note: Thank you Randy for the kind words and for your hospitality and a great shoot! For our readers who have not yet visited Coast Rifle & Pistol Club, I highly recommend you attend one of their shoots. It is a nice club with some very nice members ready to extend to you some good old Southern hospitality. We also want to thank Carla McNamee for providing the photos you see on the following pages.

Don’t miss this one. The Briley Louisiana Open is one of the most fun shoots you will ever attend. Fabulous food (start your diet now) and warm friendly Southern hospitality Cajun style. The shoot is held at David and Mary Hebert’s Farm (aka The Lafayette Skeet Academy) near Kaplan, Louisiana. Six skeet fields and a beautiful clubhouse in the middle of a rice field. Great background and great targets! Did we mention fabulous food!

The Red Chute Gazette Deal

Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. These states comprise Zone VI within the National Skeet Shooting Association. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will include flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost

to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That’s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge.

These rates have been substantially discounted for gun clubs. Other commercial advertisers should request a rate quote. To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) 635-6218 or via E-Mail at [email protected].
