Te Awamutu Chamber of Com-merce has written to Hallen-steins head offi ce to urge them not to close the Te Awamutu store.

“Closures such as yours, in small towns such as Te Awamutu, leave very large gaps in the main street,” the Chamber wrote.

“You obviously have good fi nancial reasons for your deci-sion, but we would ask that you reconsider, based on the wider damage caused to our commu-nity.”

The event will take place at 916 Bond Road from 2pm on Sunday, February 12.

Bellachord, the 12 voice a-capella group from Waitomo that thrilled locals at St John’s carol service and at the Lyceum Club last year, will be performing.

Also performing will be Vocal Focus, the four voice a-capella group that won the entertain-ment section of Te Awamutu Competitions in 2005 and solo-ists Tamara Mayo of Cambridge and local, Christopher Gold-smith. There will be no entry fee, but donations to Te Awamutu Church Building Development will be accepted.

tion is hosting an address by a leading tinnitus researcher on the revolutionary new neuromon-ics tinnitus treatment.

Dr Grant Searchfi eld is an Auckland University audiology lecturer and head of the tinnitus research team.

He will speak at the Burchell Pavilion in Gorst Avenue at 1pm on Wednesday, February 22. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. The new treatment is now available at Auckland University, the only clinic outside Australia to offer neuromonics.

Food, wine festival back

Te Awamutu Lions Food and Wine Festival is back for its third year next month.

Entertainment will include Copper Kin, Zebra and Abba Gold.

Stalls are for products as-sociated with agriculture, horticulture, fl oraculture and cottage industries.

Cassia enjoys taste of fameBy Dean Taylor

Cassia Donovan doesn’t have her dream career as a singer yet, but she has tasted what it would feel like to be famous.

On the Sunday night of the Parachute ‘06 Festival at Mys-tery Creek Cassia sang on the main stage in front of 20,000 as winner of the Parachute Rock-star Comp.

“It was awesome,” she says.Cassia has just completed a

one year vocal course at Vision College in Hamilton and this year takes up an internship as art director for The Church at Te Awamutu.

A keen all-rounder in the arts, she plans to get lots of music, dance, drama and visual art hap-pening.

Cassia especially enjoys dance and music, but aspires to be a singer.

She took the opportunity along with about 100 other hopefuls to audition for Parachute Rockstar Comp, choosing to sing ‘More To Life’ by one of her favourite art-ists Stacie Oricco.

She made the semi fi nal with 20 others and sang on the Vil-lage Stage to make the top three, and stepping up to the Palladium Stage. Then after being named winner, Cassia was put on the bill for the main stage on Sunday night, and once again performed, this time for 20,000 people.

She wins the chance to record at Parachute Studios, an op-portunity she plans to make the

most of.Cassia comes from a musi-

cal family and plans to involve them.

Both parents and her four brothers play instruments and sing. She says she is very proud of them all.

Already family and friends have offered to help out with the recording, so Cassia hopes to be able to put a band together and record some original material.

Twin brother Karl writes songs, so she plans to record one of his pieces, as well as a

specially written piece by friend Riana Douglas.

If there is time she would also like to record something written by her father Terry.

The ultimate goal would be to use the opportunity to launch a career. Who can tell?

Police cracking down on speed near schools

As thousands of children return to school for 2006, police are warn-ing they intend to take a tougher line on people speeding in school zones.

Speed Kills Kids Programme is designed to reduce death and injury of our young people due to traffi c accidents.

The programme will see police strictly enforce a 5km/h tolerance within 250 metres on each side of school boundaries during the key risk times of 7.30 to 9am and 3 to 4.30pm weekdays.

Police say the move counters a quantifi able and publicly obvious road safety risk.

Deployment of the low tolerance programme will be by both staff

and cameras.Generally, but not always, there

is a 10km/h tolerance which police say allows for variations in the ac-curacy of speedometers of vehicles.

The programme comes into force today and applies to all school zones for an unlimited time.

In the last fi ve years 1200 child pedestrians have been killed or injured during school terms.

The most vulnerable group is the 11 to 15-year-old age group.

That age group accounts for 44% of all child casualties aged between fi ve and 18.

Even at the urban speed limit of 50km/h signifi cant injuries and death can be caused in accidents involving pedestrians.

At 50km/h a vehicle travels about 41 metres once the driver has reacted and applied the brakes for an unexpected event.

At that speed the reaction time means the vehicle is still travelling at 50km/h for about 20 metres un-til the brakes are applied.

An adult pedestrian hit at 50km/h has a 40% chance of be-ing killed. It is worse for a child at 45%.

An increase in speed by just 10km/h increases the risk of death for a child to 85%.

Police say they are adjusting ros-ters and timetables to administer the new programme, and it will not result in reduced services in other areas of policing.

only won the women’s section of Manu Bay fi shing contest, she took overall hon-ours with a 10.43 kg (23lb) snapper.

The elated 55-year-old says she couldn’t believe her good fortune in Sunday’s event, hosted by Raglan Sports Fishing Club.

“It was my fi rst ever competition, I don’t think I’ll do it again - how can I beat that one,” she quipped.

The Kihikihi resident landed her per-sonal best catch in 13 metres of water.

It gave her quite a fi ght for fi ve-six minutes.

It appeared to be a regulation catch un-til the reel, on borrowed gear, jammed.

“Fortunately, I’d tired the fi sh out by then,” she says. “The reel wouldn’t go out but I was able to reel it in. I was deter-mined not to lose it.”

Once she had landed the fi sh, she was confi dent the fi sh was big enough to claim the women’s prize ... but upstaging the men - “it was an awesome feeling beating them.”

“Not many ladies enter the competi-tion. The same ones seem to feature every year, so I guess it was nice to see a new face winning.”

The winner says she caught her fi sh for Ted Benseman, a founder member, life member and ex-president of the Manu Bay Fishing Club, who died of a heart attack while on a bush walk in the Coro-mandel in 2004.

“It was a special day being on Ted’s boat with his son Trevor.”

Sally Pratt’s partner Terry Nolan, who accompanied Benseman on the bush walk, was also aboard Ted’s boat.

He, too, is a life member of the Manu Bay club and was for many years a mem-ber of the Raglan Search and Rescue team.

As overall winner, Pratt won an elec-tric weed eater and a $70 fi sh and tackle voucher.

She also collected a $75 voucher cour-tesy of Raglan Four Square, $50 Bombay Orchards voucher and two bottles of wine for winning the women’s section.

The big fi sh were biting at Kawhia last weekend, with two striped marlin caught on Saturday and one on Sun-day.

Biggest of all was the 148.5kg whopper hooked by jun-ior angler, Jessica Woodcock on Saturday.

The same day Grant Hawkes caught a 128kg fi sh and on Sunday Andrew Storey reeled in a 116.5kg specimen.

What’s in a name?By John Aldworth

A hobby that began as a way of fi lling in hours at sea is now a part time shore-based business for ex-Royal Marine John McIl-roy and his wife Ann.

A former staff sergeant with 18 years service Mr McIlroy used his time at sea fi rstly to fi nd out the origin of his own surname and its coat of arms and then did the same thing for his shipmates.

“The research fascinated me and I learned many things I never knew,” he says.

“From then I was hooked on genealogy, or Nameology as I now prefer to call the business, and it has been my hobby ever since.”

Through the years at sea and later on land when he was working in Britain, Mr McIl-roy accumulated a database of 240,000 surname histories and 2500 coats of arms from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Holland, Spain, France and other countries.

He personally researched many of the names and fam-ily histories from ancient church records, libraries, heraldic socie-ties and Britain’s Public Records Offi ce in Somerset House. Some he has traced back to the 1066 Domesday Book, which recorded English places and people after the Norman conquest.

Importantly he fi nds out where the names originated, where they were fi rst registered and what the name means.

“The origin is important. Many people mix up their surname’s history with their family geneal-ogy.

“For example a family may have come to New Zealand from England but their surname comes from Scotland.”

The McIlroys, who recently moved to Te Awamutu, from Northland, are true survivors.

They have had 10 children, shifted half way round the world to live in New Zealand and both recently underwent major opera-tions - Mr McIlroy a triple heart bypass operation and Mrs McIl-roy a hip replacement.

Now working in security Mr McIlroy, a former corrosion en-gineer, and his wife are also kept busy satisfying a stream of in-quiries from people approaching them to fi nd out about the origin of their surnames and whether they have a coat of arms.

Some want a framed history to keep for the children; others the details of two family names as they marry.

Christenings, weddings and commemorations are other suit-able occasions.

To improve their skills the pair studied graphics and designed a unique heraldic surround for the family name histories and coats

of arms Mr McIlroy now creates for clients.

Produced in colour and hand-somely framed the family name histories draw on authentic history and feature pictures of famous people and scenes from the name place of origin as well as fl ags, icons and coats of arms.

To Mr McIlroy the New Zea-land connection is important.

“We don’t have enough pride in our nationhood. Why? They don’t even fl y the fl ag at most schools now.

“That’s why I include icons of New Zealand people and places in my name histories.”

New one-stop fl ooring shopThe new ‘Tile and Carpet Court’

store opens in Te Awamutu’s Mitre 10 building today, considerably ex-panding the fl ooring options avail-able from the local retailer.

Carpet Court owners Brett and Ruth Watson have teamed up with fl ooring specialists Darin and An-gela Davis to form Tile and Carpet Court, which combined with Cur-tain and Carpet Court creates a ‘one stop’ fl ooring shop.

“We already have a comprehen-sive range of carpets and vinyls available at the Carpet Court store on Cambridge Road, but we wanted to also meet the grow-ing demand for ceramic tiles and wooden fl ooring.

“To do this we have developed a specialist shop, with plenty of display space to show the exciting new options in tiles and wooden fl ooring.

“We can now offer a full range of all fl ooring types from either store - so that customers can complete all of their requirements at once.

“We can ‘cover’ the entire area - working from plans for new homes or measuring the space in existing homes and businesses to supply the necessary fl ooring.

“This also means customers can deal with one place through-out the process and only need one payment option, instead of dealing with several different companies.”

The Cambridge Road store also has a range of window treatments, again extending the options avail-able for customers and allowing for an integrated approach to inte-rior decorating.

The day-to-day operation of the new Tile and Carpet Court Store will be in the capable hands of Angela Davis.

Along with her husband Darin, who heads the team of tilers, they have been involved in the fl ooring industry for the past 15 years, both in New Zealand and in their home-land, Ireland.

Angela’s experience and knowledge means customers can receive help matching the right fl ooring option to their particular situation, while her eye for interior decorating means she can help suggest options to create a unique decor for each client.

“I have a passion for interior dec-orating, especially fl ooring, and enjoy helping people make their selections.”

Angela has extensively re-searched what is available from suppliers around the country and has selected the best products to suit the local market and custom-

ers requirements.These include a range of tile siz-

es, shapes, colours and textures with complementary borders, including the stylish new glass borders. A comprehensive range of wooden fl ooring samples is also stocked.

Continuing the ‘one stop shop’ service available at Carpet Court, customers also have access to a team of top tradesmen to lay the fl ooring.

Local people are invited to join the grand opening of Tile and Car-pet Court on Arawata Street today (February 7) to see the options available and meet staff.

The new Arawata Street market day got off to a good start on Saturday, January 28.

Many thanks to all stall holders and the public who attended.

Those at St John’s Anglican Church who have organised this new venture aim to bring a regular farmers’ market to Te Awamutu and were pleased with the extremely high qual-ity of all the 19 stall holders’ goods and their superb pres-entation.

Arawata market days will continue on the fourth Sat-urday of each month from 8am-1pm on the frontage of St John’s Church in Arawata Street.

All stall holders have booked to continue attending and an extra six stalls are already booked in for February 25 market day,

New stalls of all types would be welcomed, particularly fresh produce, home baking and arts and crafts of all types.

To help make this a commu-nity event, the organisers want to invite clubs and groups who need to raise money to come forward to run a sausage siz-zle, provide live music or run a raffl e each market day.

He bemoans the in-evitable burden on his family budget and the disloyalty to his partner.

I’m sure he will be relieved to learn that neither central govern-ment nor Waipa District Council has plans to make brothel visits com-pulsory and that secure relationships would not be targeted by any broth-el’s marketing strategy.

Being a son of Te Awamutu I have recently returned to care-give for my elderly, infi rm mother only to fi nd we are being subjected to the very disturbing incessant barking of dogs.

I don’t mean just occasionally, but at times 24 hours a day.

The Christmas holiday was especially distressing as they never stopped for the four days.

Yes, I did ring and complain.Recently I placed a Public No-

tice in your newspaper calling for anybody annoyed by barking dogs in the Te Rahu Road area to contact me.

I was overwhelmed by the response!

On canvassing my neighbours, I found a group of extremely unhappy ratepayers who have made many offi cial complaints, which seem to mysteriously disappear, and have given up as they feel they have been ignored!

One family have had to sell their property to escape the racket and tell me the property was undervalued because of the

barking dogs.Other people will no longer sit

outside in the evening for the same reason.

These people are ratepayers and this is an untenable situ-ation.

I did not name the SPCA in my Public Notice but they have declared their hand with an abusive phonecall and two pat-ently ridiculous letters to your newspaper.

One claimed dogs are better than humans and the other that we need to hear their inmates barking.

Try living next to it before making these inane sugges-tions.

There is absolutely no excuse for this cacophony and the Te Awamutu people need to be made aware of our distress.

And please would people stop asking me if I have something against dogs. I do not, only their irresponsible owners.

Give my old mother a break. This is a serious situation.

Passion for contracting still strong after 25 years

John Austin has a passion for agricultural contracting and a love of machinery.

Couple this with an ability to look ahead and implement his ideas and you have an understanding of why John Austin Ltd has been so successful.

John’s enthusiasm for contracting began on a neighbour’s farm over 30 years ago.

Today it still drives the man at the helm of one of New Zealand’s largest contract-ing companies and 2005 marks 25 years in business - no mean feat in an industry characterised by intense competition and high levels of stress.

John’s interest in machinery began as a boy - visiting Doug and Ngaire Short’s home across the road from his home at Te Mawhai.

He helped out on the farm after school and had his introduction to contracting alongside Doug.

As a teenager he began work for local agricultural contractor, Peter Hoar, and one drive on a John Deere at age 16 began his interest in the brand.

A visit to the John Deere plant in Illinois as an 18 year old confi rmed that interest and in 1980 at just 21, he achieved his fi rst major goal of buying an agricultural contracting business, taking over Peter’s machinery and client base.

He began his dream of operating his own contracting business with just one combine and one tractor.

As the business grew through demand he was able to expand the services offered, and by the 1992/93 season the company was offering a full complement - from initial spray-out to establishment, managing and harvesting.

Grass harvesting followed soon after-wards and with the huge growth in maize across the Waikato (as a dairy supplement and grain crop) the business grew along with it.

Maize now constitutes 50-60% of the business workload - rising from 560ha in the fi rst year to 4700ha this year.

The Te Mawhai business headquarters is an expanse of machinery and tractors. It is

the hub for almost every imaginable com-bination of mowing, harvesting, cropping gear and is a hive of activity.

The property is also home for his family - wife Jackie and three children Michael (10), Daniel (8) and Hannah (6).

Today John Austin Ltd has 25 tractors, three forage harvesters, two combine har-

vesters, fi ve eight-row maize planters, three sprayers, seven trucks and a full range of cultivation, planting, harvesting equipment for grass, maize and other forage crops.

He employs a full time staff of 46 and

hires a further 20-30 workers at the height of the season and they service over 1000 customers living within a 45 km radius of Te Awamutu.

John says his enthusiasm for the industry has been maintained by the huge techno-logical leaps being made each year.

He was the fi rst in New Zealand to intro-duce global positioning systems (GPS) for yield mapping technology in the grain grow-ing industry.

Precision farming continues to be at the forefront of John’s focus as the company works towards learning more about site specifi c farming and ways to better manage inputs, including fertiliser and seed.

His company was the fi rst to implement hybrid strip trials, an idea he brought home from the United States.

John’s enthusiasm for machinery means he also heads off shore to view new developments and works with overseas companies such as John Deere to modify agricultural equipment to meet New Zea-land conditions

He shares his enthusiasm for contracting at fi eld days and conferences (both in New Zealand and overseas), runs seminars, dis-tributes full colour newsletters and maga-zines to clients and has his own website (www.johnaustinltd.co.nz)

John Austin Ltd was the fi rst member of the Rural and Associated Contractors Federation to achieve ISO9001: 2000 Certifi cation in 2003 and was also named RACF New Holland Contractor of the Year in 2003.

Last year the company’s success was featured on the iconic New Zealand pro-gramme, Country Calendar.

Mike Cosgrove reckons there is nothing quite like the Wild Tur-key off road half marathon and 16km race.

The fourth annual event, held at Whatipu, at the southern end of the Waitakere Ranges, at-tracted 300 runners - including Te Awamutu’s Mike Cosgrove, his daughter Melissa, son-in-law Gerard Dorssers, Justin Ellis, Dion Higgie and Matthew Cook.

“It’s certainly not for the faint hearted,” says Cosgrove.

He should know, having moun-tain climbed six continents, excluding North America. He is doing Rainier in August and climbed Mt Aspiring a week be-fore the Wild Turkey event.

The latter race started with a 7km run along the beach.

Participants then turned in-land and followed the Pararaha Stream with its several steep rock faces and inclines.

They climbed and scrambled their way over rough, slippery terrain.

For these reasons, the track is not suitable for vertigo suf-ferers.

Some parts required par-ticipants to wade/swim through freezing water holes, resulting in cramping.

At times, the 21km entrants were in water over their heads.

The 16km runners did not have to negotiate the Pararaha Stream, but did go through waist high water.

They then ran up to the high-est point (400m) before negoti-ating their way through bush tracks back down to the fi nish line.

Each competitor had to carry a small back pack containing compulsory clothing and equip-ment for safety purposes - map, weatherproof parker, thermal gloves and hat, polypropylene or thermal long sleeve shirt, sur-vival blanket, fi rst aid kit, water and nutritional supplies.

The day was hot and fi ne, with a head wind thrown in to test the runners mettle.

Melissa Cosgrove placed fourth in the open women’s

16km run in a time of 1.37.05.Dorssers was 17th in the men’s

open 16km run in 1.42.52.Mike Cosgrove was 15th home

in the veteran men’s 21km half marathon in a time of 2.44.56.

Justin Ellis was 69th and Dion Higgie 70th in the open men’s 21km event in 2.55.07 and 2.55.08 respectively.

Matthew Cook placed 75th in the open men’s fi eld in 3.01.48.

The latter trio entered the event purely by chance.

“We met Mike Cosgrove half way up Kakepuku one day on a training run and he suggested we enter the Wild Turkey he’d competed in last year,” says Higgie.

“We said we’d train for it and away we went.

“The event was a little dif-ferent to what I expected. The terrain wasn’t as steep as Kakepuku but there was a lot of swimming and we had to carry those back-packs, including two litres of water.”

Higgie says running in a straight line should be a breeze from now on.”

Standout performances for Midlands at the Northern Districts under-15 tourna-ment at Taupo had its reward for three Te Awamutu cricket-ers.

Peter West, Peter Bocock and Levi Jamieson (reserve) were all named in the Northern Districts Under-15 Development Team to play their Auckland counterparts in Auckland.

West had the honour of cap-taining the side.

He fi nished the tournament at Delaney Park, Taupo with 10 wickets at an average of 13 runs per dismal, includ-ing fi gures of 2-9 off six overs opening the bowling against Counties.

His best score with the bat was 36 against Poverty Bay.

Peter Bocock averaged 40 runs with the bat with best knocks of 32no against Pov-erty Bay and 37no against Counties, laced with seven fours.

Levi Jamieson claimed seven wickets at an average of 15 with his left-arm spin. His best return was 3-19 off 10 overs against Poverty Bay.

He had useful knocks with the bat of 31 against Hamil-ton, 18 against Poverty Bay and 17 against Counties.

Midlands’ loss to Hamilton was offset with wins over Counties and Poverty Bay in the one-dayers, and a draw against Bay of Plenty Lake-lands in their two-day match.

The rain affected match between ND and Auckland Development teams petered out to a tame draw.

Boost for Kihikihi polo ahead of test

Kihikihi Polo Club is abuzz with excitement after the se-lection of Robert Watson in the New Zealand squad for FIP World Cup in 2007.

“It great news ahead of the international between New Zea-land and England at Kihikihi on February 11,” says club spokes-person Simon Bennett.

New Zealand will host a re-gional playoff for the fi rst time, involving six Zone D teams from Australia, Asia, Africa and New Zealand.

Watson says the thought of playing for the New Zealand FIP team in front of a home crowd has certainly got him excited.

“I’m just as excited as I was before my two tests and one previous FIP World Cup quali-fying series for New Zealand in India.”

Watson has had a long and illustrious career, spanning 23 years. He made his debut for New Zealand against Peru in 1991.

He heralds from one of the strongest polo families in New Zealand. Seven relations are currently playing polo.

His father represented New Zealand and his uncle Jim captained the national side for sometime.

Watson’s best moment in polo, to date, was winning the pres-tigious Savile Cup when playing for Cambridge at the time.

His worst polo moment was getting soundly beaten in his fi rst Savile Cup fi nal.

Polo has taken him to all cor-ners of the world.

“It’s a great sport,” he says.“What better way to see the

world and also have your busi-ness as your sport.”

His love of travelling and new places, through his polo, has seen him spend very few win-ters in New Zealand over the past 12 years.

Polo has taken precedence over his economics degree which still waits to be fi nished.

“My focus is straight forward. I want to be the best I can be, both as a player and developing polo ponies.”

He takes real pride in bring-ing them on to be the best they can be as well.

With U2 being his favourite

band, Watson is eagerly await-ing their fast-approaching New Zealand concert.

But there is one other part of New Zealand polo that needs to be addressed - winning the New Zealand Open which is on about the same time as this month’s U2 concert.

Looks like he’s got a busy week ahead of him.
