has always been overseen by an engaged editorial staff and impactful designers, like former designer Otl Aicher or present art director Mike Meiré. Together, we continue to enhance the quality of the magazine’s content and design. In an unprece-dented fashion, we continue to invest in the degree of prepara-tion, depth of content, and thematic breadth of our print issues, and in discursive formats like the features and

displays, and our new Salons.

THEMES AND DATES 2020/21 – all issues are released in German, titels are translated to English for information only

THE FACADE PROJECT

Release date: September 2021Editorial deadline: August 1st, 2021

Facades are bearers of meaning and ideology. They also express the influence of architectural theories, demonstrate political and economic power, and represent the developers behind the project. Drawing on Walter Benjamin’s seminal analysis The Arcades Project, scholars from the field of cultural studies will examine buildings in terms of both formal and aesthetic aspects as well as the social, economic, and political contexts in which they were built in order to highlight how facades influence the establishment of power relations and social structures in the 21st century.

In cooperation with Stefan Fuchs and Raphael Dillhof

GENDER AND ARCHITECTURE

Release date: December 2021Editorial deadline: November 1st, 2021

This issue examines the relationships between gender and architecture – understood as both the production and use of space. To what extent do gender-based power relations continue to shape our material living environment today? How can spatial practices contribute to equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion? Findings from the field of Gender Studies will expand the spatial discourse in order to discuss the spatial dimension of the emancipation of women, people of color, and people with diverse sexual and gender identities with regard to underlying social power relations, from an intersectional perspective.

In cooperation with Torsten Lange, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, Daniela Ortiz dos Santos, Gabrielle Schaad

CONTESTED MODERNITIES

Release date: March 2021Editorial deadline: February 1st, 2021

Following decolonization in the mid-20th century, many countries of South-east Asia, such as Burma (now Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, and Singapore, were faced with the task of re-figuring themselves as new nations and developing an independent postcolonial identity. This process of nation building was also achieved through architecture and urban planning. The resulting tropical modernism and its buildings are increasingly at risk due to rapid urbanization. This issue makes a case for the critical investigation, preservation, and reprogramming of buildings from this important period.

HOUSING IN VIENNA

Release date:Juni 2021Editorial deadline: May 1st, 2021

In light of the current Europe-wide housing crisis and the Left’s loss of rel-evance, many are looking enviously to Vienna, whose social housing poli-cies are considered a model for Europe and beyond. Using this situation as a starting point, this issue highlights current issues regarding the con-struction of mass housing in Vienna and expands the discourse to include critical aspects and new perspectives. At the crossroads of notions on the common good by the welfare state and the promise of individual pros-perity by the market, the contributions in this issue explore various posi-tions on housing policy and production.

Building on the exhibition 1989–2019: Politics of Space in the New Berlin, this issue examines the city's spatial transformation since the fall of the Wall.

was founded in 1967 by a group of idealists at the University of Stuttgart who, in the words of one founder, “hungered after theoretical concepts,” and sought a way to combine theory with practice. The first issue was published in January 1968.

For 50 years now, has charted and defined the discourse. 50 years of radically advancing the orientation, topics, features, and layout. 50 years of passing on the fundamental approach from generation to generation––a magazine that is idealistic, independent, nonconformist, challenging, opinionated, and political.

Each issue is dedicated to a specific theme that addresses the latest developments in architecture, urban planning, art, and technology, while tying these to innovative projects.
