PRESIDENT'S PAGE
Dear Friends:
May you all have a healthy, prosperous yedl'. We are starting 1987 with many positive plans, and if all goes as planned, should have a very interesting yea~.
Your new slate of officers was nominated dnd elected at the December annual meeting. The installdtion ceremony was beautifully accomplished by Past President, Margery Wright. The celebration of our 30 + I anniversary followed. Jeannie Boyett and her committee are to be complimented. The tables looked lovely, as usual we had more than enough of all kinds of tasty christmas food. We ail enjoyed the good will and fellowship.
We are planning a workshop in July, and the Book ~air in August. Joyce Bridges is also planning a cookbook, to be sold at the Book fair=proceeds to be used to help purchase Pension Records for Shreve Memorial Library. All our members are asked to contribute family recipes.
The genealogical classes for beginners will be held in February and March.
Wanda Head has invited Beverly Smith, director of the Hubert S. Ford Museum near Homer, to present a program on Historic Claiborne Parish at our February 14 meeting. Rita Krouse will present the program in March. The topic will be the Germantown Settlement, and she will also
'give some'pointers on getting started on researching German ancestors.
Priscilla Reinowski is always looking for material for 'The Genie. If you have any Bible records, old letters or family history you would like to share, please send
. them to the editor.
We hope your research is doing well. The desire or need to 'know where we came from is the mystery that keeps us searChing. Our roots are the support system that give value to what we are recording for future generations.

HISTORY OF THE VANCE GUARDS By Johrl Ardis Manry
The first organized cUlllpany to leave Bossier Parish was the Bossier Boys. It left Bellevue, the parish seat, 9 May 1861, and was mustered into State service at New Orleans. It went to Camp MOORE, near New Orleans, where they were drilled for about three weeks. On account of a controversy between Governor MOORE and the Secretary of War the company was mustered out of service and ret.urneJ home to enter other companies, organized and to be organized. Thirty joined the Vance Guards.
Six companies, enrolling 800 men, were organized as speedily as possible. In view of the fact that the voting strength of the parish was but slightly over 700 at this time, the enlistment of 800 speaks eloquently for the loyalty of Bossier's beardless youth.
"On Monday, 23 September 1861, a barbecue was given by the citizens of Red Land-a large number of the men enlisting from that place and the surrounding country," wrote William H. SCANLAND, editor of the Bossier Banner, many years later.
"What a magnificent country was the Red Land settlement in 1861! Peopled by patriotic home-builders of sterling manhood and women of noble character and admirable domestic habitsthey were a happy, industrious and prosperous community, ever ready to lend a helping hand to neighbor or country."
"Good men and citizens were the SWINDLES, EDENS, ALLENS, GARRETS, WYCHES, BOGGS, CAVETTS, HERRONS, CAMPBELLS, CRAWFORDS, WINGETS, SCOTTS, SPURLINS, SHAVERS, LYNNS, FRANKS, MARTINS, CASONS, COCHRANS, MATLOCKS, WALKERS, COVINGTONS, MADINGS, DAVIS, H,OLLOWAYS,.WALLACES, MC DONALDS, MATTISONS, WALDROPS, WINDSORS, FARRINGTONS, OWENS, O'DANIELS and many others" whose name the old editor could not remember after a lapse of more than 50 years. '
The company went to Monroe, caught a train to Camp MOORE where a school of instruction had been set up. This camp had been hastily constructed and many of the Vance guards died, the first of whom was J. G. HARRIS.
On 9 March 1862, the Nineteenth Louisiana Infantry, CSA, was activated, and was composed of companies from northwest Louisiana as follows:
Company A (Vance Guards), Captain R. R. TURNER; Bossier. Company B (Robin Greys), Captain Loudon BUTLER; Bossier. Company C (Claiborne Volunteers), H. A. KENNEDY; Claiborne. Company D (Claiborne Greys), Captain W.E. SCOTT; Claiborne. Company E (Keachi Warriors), Captain H.H. HAMM, DeSoto. Company F (Henry MARSHAL Guards), Captain J. M. HOLLINGS-
WORTH; DeSoto. Company· G (Caddo Tenth), Captain 'Wesley P. WINANS, Suc
ceededby J. P. BRIDGES; Caddo .
mE GENIE First Quarter 1987
Company H (DeSoto Creoles), Captain John H. SUTHERLIN, succeeded by Joshua LOGAN; De Soto.
Company K (Anacoco Rangers), Captain W.W. SMART; Sabine.
There was no Webster Parish at that time, it being created later from Claiborne and Bossier parishes.
The Nineteenth Regiment arrived at Corinth, Miss., where it was discovered the entire regiment was poorly armed "and had not a single cartridge, and none can be had in Memphis or Nashville." .
On April 6-7, the Nineteenth became part of the Second Corps, Fwst Division, in the Army of Missis8ippe, Colonel R. L. GIBSON was in command. The Confederates had concentrated 40,000 men at Corinth·with a view of beating the Yankees under General U. S. GRANT before reinforoements under General BUELL could arrive to assist him. The f~rst day of battle could have been a victory for the Rebels but they were decisively defeated the second day of the Battle of Shiloh, just north of Corinth,Miss., in Tennessee. It was a Confederate failure but not a Union Victory, each side being weakened by about 10,000 men.
Casualties in their first battle were heavy.

OLD SHADY GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY IN \~INN PARISH
The Old Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Winn Parish had been neglected and abandoned until this summer when five descendants of the SOWERS Family concentrated their efforts in restoring and recording the grave~ and tombstones.
The original Shady Grove Baptist Churc,h was built and the cemetery established in the 1850's in the mid-eastern part of Winn Parish. Located in an area now approximately 12 miles east of Winnfield on Highway 84 and four miles north, the old cemetery is now surrounded by deep forest land. Prior to the tLd'rl of the century, the congregation moved four miles north and the third church building was built on the present site. It is still standing and in use by the congregation.
According to June Sowers GREEN of Shreveport, La., one hundred or more graves are unmarked, many have plain boards for markers, and five or six are marked with pieces of petrified wood.
Inscriptions from g~aves with readable and permanent markers are given below. Anyone knowing the names and information as to others who might be buried hel'e, is asked to contact Mrs. Leonard GREEN, Jr., 3311 Fairfield Avenue, Shreveport, LA., 71104.

DESOTO EXCELLS IN REFINEMENT" EDUCATION From A TOURIST,' S DESCRIPTION
OF LOUISIANA IN 1860
Ed. Crescent-My last letter was from the town of Natchitoches, which is distant from Mansfield, the parish seat of DeSoto, 'whence I write, fifty-five miles via stage road-fifty-five long and weary miles this dry season, for the road is rough and dusty in the ext.reme.. It is a "ridge road" and running thus along the high "lands which are comparatively sparsely populated, the traveler sees few of the improvements of a wealthy and populous parish, . for these are mostly located in the bottom lands, where may be found many ' fine and extensive cotton estates that add many thousands of bales to the yearly, aggregate of the crop returns of Louisiana.
The heavier planters of the parish are Messrs. Henry Marshall, John Marshall, Boykin Witherspoon, Charles Edwards, T.M. Gatlin, E. T .• Robinson,. Jesse Goodwin, Dr. G.A. Frierson, Major J.J. Grening, Mrs. Maria Childres, Dr. B.F. Chapman, Henry Morse, Geo. C. Burns" R. T. Johson, John Jordan, H. Phillips, M. Hale, T. P. Hale, Wm. Hale, John Ross, Samuel Ivey, Jesse Ivey, B. Dixon, H. Turner, John and Isaac Murrell, A.M. Chapman, J.W. Munday, Samuel Clark,Mrs. Rochelle, W.T. Fortson, Major Logan, Charles S. Pegues, Thomas Gilmer, GeorgeR. Hayden, W. Pitts, D. Eastman, Col. H. Sloan, John W. Reeves, James Hollingsworth, Wm. Crosly, Major Tompkies, L.L. Tompkies, George Eldridge, Dr. Firman, Mrs. Means, Jeptha McCraw, B.W. Pearson, Jas. Nolan, Y.W. Graves and perhaps others, but all of the above can make two hundred bales and some of them quadruple thos.e pretty figures.
DeSoto parish lies between Red river and the Texas line, and borders -on the parishes of Natchitoches, Sabine and Caddo. By the Red River and Mississippi route its lowest point of the parish on the former river is something over five hundred miles for New Orleans. It is ,rapidly increasing in wealthy and population, which it has chiefly drawn and is still drawing from the States of Georgia and Alabama. As indicative of this prosperous increase, the parish, will be assessed for the present year at upwards of a million dollars more than for the previous, and the vote will reach nearly eleven hundred, or near two hundred more than heretofore. The population of the parish is about thirteen thousand, of whom near' eight thousand are slaves. Its area ,comprises two hundred and forty-six thousand acres in round numbers, of which some thirty-six or seven thousand are in cotton, and. some twenty-eight thousand are in corn. Its valuable .lands are about all in private hands, and are held-for the bottom. ,lands, at. from fifteen to twenty dollars per acre; the uplands.at from five to ten dollars. Among the larger land holders ~y be mentioned T. H. Patterson and Thomas Hunter, who have from eighteen to twenty thousand acres each. The soil is light ~ ft'iable and easily tilled, and the labor of "keeping the
THE GENIE First Quarter 1987 19
crop out of the grass" is small compared with what it is in the alluvial lands of the State. The climate and atmosphere partake in a large degree of the dry, pure and healthful peculiarities which characterize those of the uplands of Texas, which the parish adjoins.
In refinement, education and social attributes the people excel, and the educational spirit is, par consequence, strongly abroad among them. In the parish are located several institutes of learning of high standing in the country-liberally endowed, largely patronized and wisely administered. The Mansfield Female College, in this town, occupies a very handsome, spacious and costly brick building, is attended by from a hundred and thirty to a hundred and fifty pupils, who are accomplished in all the abilities and graces of a thorough education by an able faculty at the head of which stands Rev. H. C. Thweatt, as President of the College. This institution is under the patronage of the Methodist Episcopal Church. At the pleasant village of Keachie, twenty miles from Mansfield, is the "Keachie Female College" under the patronage of the Baptist Church; Rev. J. H. Tucker is at the head of its very competent faculty, and an average of a hundred pupils are enrolled for its sessions. At the village of Pleasant Hill, twenty miles from Mansfield, in another direction, the foundations of the " Pierce and Payne College", for males, are just being laid, under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. A fund of nearly a hundred thousand dollars, already contributed ensures the fruition of this enterprise. At Mansfield there is an independent institution, also for males, which is meritoriously conducted. Public schools, too, ,are thickly scattered through the parish.
Mansfield, the parish seat, is located nearly in the geographical center of the parish, about seventeen miles from Red River on the east, and near the same distance from the Sabine, on the west. It is essentially an inland town, and is ten miles from the nearest navigable water~which is lake, or Bayou Pierre, on which are found landing places at which goods may be debarked that come by the way of Redriver, from which they are boated seven miles tHrough Grand Bayou, and t~us into Bayou Pierre to the Mansfield and general landings, severally known as Smithport, Marseilles, Newport and Augusta 'at neither of which are settlements of any note, thought nearsSmithport there is a Catholic chapel, the only one 'in this Anglo-American parish. The situation of Mansfield is pleasantly rural and retired, on elevated ground, and it is awell .. built town of some twelve hundred inhabitants. It is a scattet'ingtown, with large gardens or small fields pertaining to most of the residences, which make it all the pleasanter. The prime feature of the town is the female college, which is a very handsome building, and stands upon an elevation that secures it a commanding aspect. The Courthouse is a substantial and tasteful brick erection, and several of the stores are creditable in matters of style, extent and workmanship. • (Copies from a hand-out prepared by Raymond Powell, president of the DeSoto Parish Historical Society, available from the office of the DeSoto Parish Clerk of Court. )

OVER THE EDITOR'S DESK
One of our favorite genealogy columns is "OUR KEYSTONE FAMILIES", written by Schuyler Brossman, P. O. Box 43, Rehre~sburg, PA, 19550. In its 17th year, it appears weekly in two Pennsylvania newspapers.
All queries must have a Pennsylvania connection, include at least one date and should not be more than 150 wo~ds. Anyone with Pennsylvania German roots, particularly, should not overlook either the information contained. in this column, or the possibilities of making contacts through queries.
, Coincidentally, two of the four items concerning family newsletters contained in a recent column of Mr. Brossman's had been sent in from our Ark-La-Tex area.
SHANNON SEARCHERS is a new -genealogical surname newsletter published bi-monthly beginning in January 1987, with an annual index in the Nov./Dec. 1987 issue. There will be at least 10 pages. The cost will be $8.50 for six issues. Order from Joyce Shannon BRIDGES, R2, Box 50-I, Keithville, LA, 71074. (Joyce is the queries columnist.)
THE CLOUD FAMILY JOURNAL is published four times a year and the cost is $20 per year, in the year running from 1 July to 30 June. If you are connected with the Clouds, you will find sunshine looking for new "Clouds" and information about them. Write to Betty Cloud FERGUSON, 1617 Bradley Street, Bossier City, LA, 71112.
GLENN GLEANINGS is the name of a newsletter which concerns all branches of the GLENN surname and its allied lineages. This newsletter has a free query column and is published quarterly at a cost of $12.00 yearly. Bette BRENGLE-POOLE, 2203 Aquila's Delight, Ta11ston, MD, 21047, if our correspondent.
Books on-genealogical interest received by your editor either directly from the author or publisher, or as a donation to the annual August Book Fair of the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association are reviewed in the book review column ~f THE GENIE as time and space permits. Following review all books donated are placed on the shelves of the ,enealogical room of Shreve Memorial Library. Should a certa1n title be already available at Shreve Memorial, the duplicate copy is placed in the rental library of our Association for circulation among the membership at a nominal fee. Through the efforts of the Ark-LA-Tex Genealogical Association, several thousands of dollars are donated each year in books and cash to increase genealogical materialsavailable at Shreve Memorial Library. The majority of
THE GENIE Pirst Quarter 41
of the microfilm available in the genealogical room at Shreve Memorial Library has also been placed there as a result of the efforts over the years of ' the Ark-La-TexGenealogical Association. At its December meeting the Association voted a gift of $2000.00 to p1..lr'chas~ additiollal federal census microfilm, film which should ,be available to researchers at Shreve Memorial in the near future.
While space does not permit us to include reviews of genealogical surname newsletters in our book review columns, we do r.eceive copies and notices of them from time to time, and realize that contact with these publications is of interest to one researching that particular name. We are, therefore, listing here some of those whose copies have come across our desk.
THE ARMSTRONG BULLETIN BOARD is 10 pages of queries, articles, research aids, book reviews and rare or old documents valuable for Armstrong research. Subscription is $6.00 for 4 issues. Editor is Fred W. FIELD, 1516 Avenida Selva, Fullerton, CA, 92633.
