News from the YLD Kathleen Walters, YLD President

Please see Tight Space on page 4

Due to the recent departure of Jeff Frankenburger, I am now serving as YLD President for the

remainder of 2013. Jeff has accepted a position with the Lycoming County Public Defender office

and we wish him all the best.

The YLD has continued its mentoring lunches over the last few months, with Attorneys Bill Cramer,

Tim McManus and Barry Cohen as the most recent speakers to share their experiences and insight

with the YLD members. If you are interested in participating in a mentoring lunch, please contact

Hillary Madden at [email protected].

In August, the YLD paddled the waters of the Delaware River with its summer rafting event,

attended by both the general membership and YLD alike, along with several family members in tow.

Thanks to all those that attended, we hope you enjoyed the event.

We are also in the process of coordinating our annual blood drive – more details to come in the near

future!

If you have ideas for activities or events, please contact the MCBA staff at 570-424-7288 or via

email to [email protected].

Monroe County Bar Foundation continues to grow

William J. Reaser, Jr., MCBF Chairman

If you read the newsletter or attend one of the regular member meetings, you know that

the Foundation continues to donate to many charities. We always talk about were the

funds go, however, rarely do we say where the money comes from.

The key source of our revenue is you, our members. Each year our direct mail campaign

results in donations of over $4,000. Whenever we do a special project like the courthouse

bell tower, we again go to you. That project alone raised over $10,000 all of which was

used to reconstruct the tower. Every time you hear the bell, remember it rings because of

you. We also do events every two or three years. Over the years, we have held events

inviting not only members and their families to participate but the community as well.

We’ve held art auctions, fun ‘draisers and our most recent endeavor, a beer and wine

tasting event at ShawneeCraft Brewery located on the property of The Shawnee Inn and

Golf Resort.

This year we provided three graduating seniors with scholarships and funded programs

through the East Stroudsburg University Foundation, Pocono Family YMCA, and Pocono

Arts Council. We are pleased to also helped to fund books, “What’s Happening in

Dependency Court” for children coming through the court system. As the numbers are

finalized from the beer and wine tasting event, we will be donating to both the new

Children’s Advocacy Center of Monroe County and Camp Cadet Troop “N”. Thank you

for allowing us to help our community on your behalf.

The Lawyer Referral Service is now the Find a Lawyer Program! The name has changed to more accurately describe the

nature of the program. You will notice a change in wording reflecting the name change in any correspondence the Bar

Association sends regarding this program going forward.

The Find a Lawyer program is now available online. Anyone who is looking for an attorney in Monroe County can find one

through our online system by visiting the MCBA website www.monroebar.org. The online system is the same as we use at the

office and meets the goal of being fair and random to the participants.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the Bar Association at 570.424.7288.

PBA President Forest Myers was entertaining as he talked about all the

initiatives and projects at the state level. It was a pleasure having the

PBA President and President-Elect, Frank O’Connor with us for the

conference. Tim Kelly, Zone 5 Governor joined us for the day also.

It was very nice to have so many of our county officials and row officers

join us for the Bar Association’s premier annual event. We appreciate

their time and interest.

And, the vendors. What can we say about the vendor? Their financial

support helps us maintain the low registration fee. We know they were

very pleased with the time all of you spent with them. Many of these

vendors have been coming back year after year, so please remember them

whenever you are in need of their services.

Thank you to all that attended the Judges’ Round Table. The opportunity

for all of our six judges and our members to sit down and hold open and

honest discussion is one that everyone values. Thank you to the

members that offered questions and comments. We look to expand this

part of the day in the future.

If you stayed until the end, we hope you had a fun time just relaxing on

the veranda eating some great hors d’oeurvres and sipping on a glass of

wine or ShawneeCraft beer. It was really the perfect ending to a perfect

day. We even had a drawing for some cool prizes. Thank you to

Shawnee Inn for providing us with a one night stay!

Finally, mark September 19, 2014 down for our next Bench Bar

Conference! Much more to follow, but not for a while!
