Dr. Cesari: Views on HealthEastGene Cesari, Ph.D. has accepted

the formidable position as the firstchairperson of HealthEast, Inc.Enth usiastic about the new corpora-tion, Dr. Cesari, along with his fellowboard members, feels a multihospitalsystem is the way of the future. Withthe current economic constraintsand the search by the health careindustry to find increasingly morecost effective ways to operate, HealthEast has an important task ahead.

Dr. Cesari is particularly enthu-siastic about HealthEast's ability toenhance the level of health andhealth care services in the region,"The Lehigh Valley is uniquelyendowed with many diverse assets.Among them is the potential forproviding a wide range of healthservices of the highest order. As istrue in higher education, cooperationwill make the whole considerablygreater than the sum of the parts. Isincerely hope that all interestedparties will work together toward the

common goal of improving the qualityof life in our region. I know that myfellow board members are committedto this goal and are extremely qualifiedto insure its fulfillment," he said.

"With the election of officers, themost pressing order of business isthe appointment of a chief executiveofficer," stated Dr. Cesari recently."A search committee has been chosenand it is chaired by Edward Donley, chairman of the board, Air Productsand Chemicals, Inc." This committeewill select an executive search firmwhich will bring forth five or morecandidates for the position. BothDarryl R. Lippman, president, TheAllentown Hospital, and Ellwyn D.Spiker, administrator, Lehigh ValleyHospital Center, will be considered.

"Concurrently, there is a need forthe integration of planning for allelements of HealthEast. You know,it's bigger than two hospitals. Wemust explore the potentials for

HealthEast itself, as well as itssubsidiaries," explained Dr. Cesario

HealthEast, Inc. has three sub-sidiaries at this time: The AllentownHospital, Lehigh Valley HospitalCenter and the HealthEast Manage-ment Services Company which wasformed at one of the initial boardmeetings.

Several functions are being con-sidered for coordination at the cor-porate level including finance, fund-raising, planning and public relations.

"A great deal will depend on theperson who will be chief executiveofficer. Neither the structu re nor thefunctions for the chief executiveofficer have been delineated as yetso decisions on support staff willhave to wait," said Cesario

By the excitement and eagernessexpressed by Dr. Cesari, it isevidentthat HealthEast will be a progressive,forward-thinking health care pro-vider in this region.

New Volunteer ProgramNeeds "GRANDPARENTS"

Mrs. Jeanette Lavenburg, volunteer, "Grandparents Program"

A new volunteer service hasrecently been introduced at TheAllentown Hospital by Hazel Kramer,Director of Volunteer Services.Called the "Grandparents Program,"this pilot service centers around thepediatric department where bothRosemary Christie, R.N., supervisor, and Betty Rothrock, R.N., headnurse, assist Miss Kramer in itssu pervision.

What type of volunteer is bestsuited for this job? Someone who isable to work with and enjoys child-ren. The main idea behind the Grand-parents Program is cuddling an illchild when the child's parents arenot available due to work or trans-portation problems. They give theneeded tender loving care to thepatients in pediatrics, and just as

6

important, this volunteer programmakes the volunteer participantsfeel special, too. The volunteers re-inforce the care and love that thenursing staff and other volunteersoffer the children. Miss Christiestated, " The nursing staff on pedia-trics feels this is a great program. Itbenefits everyone involved."

Some of the different ways a"grandparent" helps is by rockinginfants and toddlers; assisting withfeeding; talking, reading and playinggames with the older children; andaccompanying older children to theplayroom and overseeing their acti-vities. The ch iId ren be nefit greatlyfrom this program. They usuallybecome more content, less fearfuland happier patients.

Mrs. Jeanette Lavenburg is one

of the volunteers who comes inevery week. Since she has workedwith children most of her life as afoster parent, she finds her job veryrewarding. "It makes me feel that Iam doing something very worth-while," says Mrs. Lavenburg. Sheespecially enjoys holding and help-ing to feed the babies.

Volunteers receive on-the-jobtraining through the supervisor, head nurse and play therapist, whoorient the volunteer to the pediatricfloor, hospital policies and proce-d ures. They may also receive otherinformation from books and maga-zines.

Those interested in being a "fos-ter grandparent" should contactHazel Kramer at 821-2391.
