PUBLICANS' LICENCES

for Western NSW and some of Central NSW

A large part of my research was originally carried out for presentation on the AUS-NSW-West

Rootsweb List which is centred on the towns of Broken Hill, Wentworth, Balranald, Hay, Nyngan,

Cobar, Bourke and Walgett; and for the AUS-NSW-CENTRAL Rootsweb List which is centred on

Dubbo, Forbes, Wagga Wagga, Cowra, Albury, Deniliquin and Griffith. Major towns in Central NSW

such as Bathurst and Orange have been omitted since they have their own separate Rootsweb List

sites.

PUBLICANS' LICENCES 1865 TO 1900 FOR WESTERN NSW, AND FROM 1865 TO 1870

FOR PARTS OF CENTRAL NSW.

1) Introduction to the Publicans' Licences.

2) The names from the Government Gazettes of individual licensees have been listed under the hotels

for which the Licence was granted. Individual name search is possible.

3) Newspaper reports and advertisements concerning the hotels mentioned.

I would like to thank Linda, the Rootsweb NSW-WEST Admin, and her Deputy Peter, for all their

assistance in putting my information on the 1865 to 1900 Publicans' Licences on their NSW-WEST

website. These 1865 to 1900 and 1865 to 1870 licences can be seen at:

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~surreal/NSWW/Hotels/index.html

SOME OF THE EARLY PUBLICANS' LICENCES 1848 (1849) 1853 1854 (1858) 1860

FOR WESTERN NSW AND SOME OF CENTRAL NSW.

Butts and Certificates of Publicans' Licences.

Microfilms - State Library of New South Wales.

They are handwritten and VERY hard to read. The names below should be taken just as my

interpretation. Brackets [ ] indicate that understanding is particularly difficult.

Information given is:

the name of the person granted the licence, his address,

the name of the House for which the licence was given,

the Duty received in 1848,

and the names of the required 2 Sureties who each gave Ł50.

Although the publican's address is probably that of the hotel, I didn't feel that I could just assume this to

be the case.

There has been a question about the name of a hotel in Wentworth. It should be noted that it appears as

a joint name in 1860 - "The House known as the Junction Inn, Shearers Arms."

I apologise for the many times I can't interpret what is written. Any clarification or corrections, other

than Tarcuttah, Carcor, Burrowa (which are as spelt), would be appreciated.
