SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE RECORDS
Reports, newsletters, and miscellaneous print and near-print items of or about the Public
Welfare Department. The records cover all aspects of the department's duties and activities,
including mental health and mental retardation services, chemical dependency, child welfare,
state hospitals and institutions, services for the blind and senior citizens, medical assistance,
legislation, rehabilitation, planning, volunteer services, and the Community Social Service Act.
Included are materials of its predecessor, the Social Security Department (pre-1953), and a
few items from its successor, the Human Services Department (post-1984).
