Introduction to this study"Language is all around usin textual form as it isdisplayed on shopwindows, commercial
signs, posters, officialnotices, traffic signs, etc.Most of the time peopledo not pay muchattention to the'linguistic landscape' that
surrounds them.However, in recent yearsan increasing number ofresearchers have startedto take a closer look andstudy the language textsthat are present in publicspace. (Gorter, 2006)

Background of this studyOur group has decided that 2122 (Marsfield)and 2204 (Marrickville) are the two mostdistinctive postcodes in our group based on
the findings from Assessed Assignment 1.This decision is the base of our next decisionto briefly study the public visibility oflanguages in these two postcodes.

The aim of this study To briefly discuss two linguistic profiles;Linguistic profile of 2122 (Marsfield) and 2204(Marrickville), based on 2006 Census
QuickStats provided by Australian Bureau ofStatistics (ABS) 2006.
To explore public visibility of languages inthese two postcodes.
To look for any relationship and/or patternbetween the type of sign and the languageused.
To see the relationship between the linguisticprofile as provided by the ABS and the public

languages spoken at homewithin 2122; English only(48.2%), Cantonese
(13.1%), Mandarin (11.2%),Korean (5.3%) and Italian(2.3%). English only isidentified as the mainlanguage spoken at home
by most of the residents of2122 while Italian is thefifth in the list.

the similaritiesEnglish only is the main language spoken at home
both in 2122 and 2204, even though thepercentage of totals persons using it in 2122
(48.2%) and 2204 (46.4%) is different.Italian is the fifth language spoken at home both in
2122 and 2204, even though the percentage oftotals persons using it in 2122 (2.3%) and 2204
(2.9%) is different. The fourth language in the list for both postcodes
share the same percentage (5.3%), even thoughthey are not the same language (Korean for 2122andArabic for 2204).
