• The Survey was commissioned by Christian Aid and conducted by Infotrak Research &

Consulting between 9th -13th January 2017

• A sample of 1536 respondents was interviewed to represent the Kenyan adult population of

19,462,358, translating into a minimum margin of error of -/+ 2.5 at 95% degree of confidence.

The survey was conducted in all the 8 regions of Kenya

• Using the 2009 Kenya Population & Housing Census as the sample frame, the sample was

designed using Population Proportionate to Size (PPS) and mainly entailed;

• Use of stratification, random and systematic sampling in determining counties to be

covered

• Ensuring that every person in the sampled area had a known chance of being selected

• Data collection was done at the household level using Mobile Data Collection Devices/Tablets.

• 25% of the interviews were back checked for quality control purposes

• Data processing & analysis was carried using IBM SPSS 21

• The questions asked are highlighted under each graphic presentation

PERCEPTION ON THE AFFORDABILITY OF ENERGY

• FINDING : Most Kenyans think that Kenya power electricity, Biomass ( Charcoal & wood), Solar energy and Kerosene are the most affordable sources of energy.

• FINDING : 41% of those in North Eastern still believe that Charcoal and wood are the most affordable sources of energy. Approximately 30% of those in Nyanza and Eastern and 28% of those in Rift Valley also perceive the biomass fuel to be most affordable. The fundamental question is whether the communities that cut down trees for firewood and charcoal actual proactively participate in replacing those trees and forests.

A 2015 projection on climate change stated as follows: “Increased charcoal production and sales of wood to meet the household income and food needs in Northern Kenya will particularly be

exacerbated in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas of the region. This will result in increased environmental degradation.”

• FINDING : Penetration of Solar energy seems to be growing and currently stands at 20%. Use of Solar is most prevalent in Coast; 28%, Nyanza;27% , Rift Valley and Western ; 25% respectively.

• FINDING : LPG is not perceived to be affordable even in Nairobi where 69% use is for cooking energy. Only 17% of those in Nairobi perceive LPG Gas to be an affordable source of energy.

• FINDING : The other renewable sources of energy like biogas and wind energy are not perceived to be very affordable.
