On behalf of the board of directors, the executive officers, and the dedicated members of the Ohio Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF), we would like to welcome you to the 2020 PILF Live and Silent Auction. Tonight’s event is sponsored by The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

All proceeds go to fellowships for Moritz College of Law students working in the public interest field.

PILF is a student-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting public service throughout the Moritz community. We strive to connect students who have hopes of working in public interest and government legal positions with opportunities to advance their goals. Through programs such as our PILF Summer Fellowships, we bring students together with the innovative and dedicated legal professionals who practice public interest work in the community. All proceeds from tonight’s event will help fund our PILF Summer Fellowships.

PILF would not be where it is today without the efforts of our excellent faculty board members, Professor Arthur F. Greenbaum and Professor Stephanie Hoffer, and board members, Eleni Christofides, Jacob Selsor, and Erin Hassett. In addition, this auction would not be complete without our faculty auctioneers, Dean Daniel Tokaji, Professor Stephanie Hoffer, and Professor Arthur F. Greenbaum. Finally, we extend our sincere gratitude to the college for its support of PILF and to Dean Lincoln L. Davies for his personal efforts in ensuring our continued success.

Public Sector Award Winner: Ohio Access to Justice Foundation

The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation (formerly known as the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation), celebrated its 25th year of meeting the legal needs of Ohio’s low-income individuals in 2019. Since 1994, the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation, has worked tirelessly to fund civil legal help for children, seniors, veterans, and domestic violence survivors across the State of Ohio regardless of income. In addition to providing critical dollars to fund civil legal aid throughout Ohio, the foundation funds Justice for All Fellowships, supports pro bono efforts and Access to Justice initiatives. Additionally, the foundation annually supports PILF by sponsoring a full summer fellowship. We are so grateful for its support. In 2018, the foundation provided over $18 million to Ohio’s Legal Aids, which helped to fund over 118,000 hours of pro bono service to Ohio’s low-income individuals. It is an honor to present this award to an organization that has given so much to the public interest over the last 25 years. May the next 25 years build on these successes to help even more Ohioans access critically important legal services.

Public Service Award Winner: Christine Donovan

Ms. Donovan has dedicated much of her career to serving the public in some capacity. While attending Moritz from 2010 to 2013, Christine was active in PILF, Education Law Society, Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law, Moot Court, and Dispute Resolution and Youth. Upon graduation, Christine was named a Public Service Fellow with Dean’s Special Recognition; an honor bestowed on those give between 250 and 499 hours of volunteer legal service to public interest and government entities. Her work experience during law school included the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, and the

Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation (now the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation). After graduation, Christine worked as a fundraiser for The Ohio State University serving the College of Medicine, where she worked to secure over $1.6 million dollars in cash and estate gifts. In 2015, Christine moved to Cristo Rey Columbus High School where she served as the Director of Development, and later the Director of Advancement and Strategic Planning. While there, she grew fundraising revenue by 188 percent over a three-year period. During her time there, Christine also established the organization’s first planned giving initiative, launched a permanent major gifts program, and instituted a donor relations program, including mailings and a donor recognition event. In late 2019, Christine took a position as a Donor Services Officer for the Columbus Foundation, one of the top ten largest community foundations in the United States. Their mission is to improve the community and quality of life in Central Ohio. Christine is responsible for providing philanthropic information and assistance to individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofit organizations in order to build the Foundation’s endowment through charitable giving. Despite these vast and changing experience, one thing has remained constant — Christine’s devotion to PILF. As the President of PILF, she oversaw a 45% increase of fundraising revenues. After graduation, Christine chose to remain on PILF’s Board of Directors until her retirement from the Board this fall, mentoring further presidents, helping to ensure that PILF operated smoothly and effectively, and assisting the organization in any other way she could. It is our pleasure to grant this award to Christine Donovan for not only her devotion to PILF, but for her devotion to the public good in general.

Auction Rules REGISTRATION Upon entering the auction, you will receive your bid number. Use only the bid number assigned to you for bidding on silent and live auction items. You may ask a friend to proxy bid for you if you are unable to attend a portion of either auction. SILENT AUCTION The silent auction opens at 6 p.m. The minimum bid and minimum raise for each item is written on the bid sheet by the item. To be valid, bids must comply with these minimums and be legible. To place a bid, sign your name with your bidder number and bid amount on the bid sheet. Doing so constitutes a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item at the price you stated if your bid is the winning bid. The last (highest) valid bid entered prior to the section closing will be the winning bid. The auction committee reserves the right to withdraw any item at any time without notice before the actual sale. In the event of a dispute, the auction committee shall act as the final authority in determining the winning bid. LIVE AUCTION Live auction bidding will begin at approximately 7:15 p.m. When bidding, please hold up your bid number toward the auctioneer. The live auction will continue until all items are sold. If a group is bidding on one item, please designate one person to place your combined bid. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. PAYMENT All items must be paid for at the checkout tables by the end of the evening. For your convenience, we gladly accept cash, check, MasterCard, and Visa. PICK-UP Once you have paid for your winning items, you will be issued a receipt. Please present this receipt at the checkout table to claim your winning items and/or certificates for service. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to locate and remove his/her winning item(s) by the end of the auction.

TERMS AND TAX TERMS OF SALE Unless otherwise noted, all certificates for goods and services must be used within one year of the auction date. All items and services are subject to the terms and conditions specified by the donors. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds. PILF does not make any express or implied warranties or guarantees on auction items regarding quality or value of items or services. PILF has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered and sold “AS IS” and “WITH ALL FAULTS.” PILF neither warrants nor represents, and in no event, shall be responsible for, the correctness of descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance, or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalog or made orally at the auction or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty for tax purposes or market value. Items have not been appraised unless otherwise noted. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed on travel packages for cancelled tickets and/or accommodations.
