FONT-ASTIC SUCCESS Whether it was divine intervention or not, the first Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival to be held at the Holy Trinity church in Hull, was an overwhelming success, way beyond the dreams of any of the organisers. They say that people vote with their feet and in this case they surely did by the hundreds. The organisers were so taken aback by the take up, extra cask ales were brought in to try to stretch the beers to the third day on the Saturday. Unfortunately that did quite work as all beer, cider and bottle products were sold out by 2pm on the Saturday afternoon. So apologies for all those people that were disappointed by that, the good news is that next year will be have a lot more beers (100+?) and cider for your enjoyment. Talks are already going ahead with the church to hold the festival around the same weekend next year, good news for us and I hope the customers who came this year. Further news on the dates as soon as possible. It was also good news for the local real ale pubs in the area. To encourage our disappointed customers to stay in town and try real ales we gave out copies of our new publication ‘Hull Real Ale Guide’ which details over 80 pubs in Hull which sell at least one real ale. The licensees tell us they had a bumper Saturday afternoon and evening, which from our point of view is in itself a plus and helps push the message on real ale. Further festival views, pictures and reports inside this magazine.

What a great beer festival we had in April at theHoly Trinity Church, all beer, cider and bottledbeer sold out by 2 pm on the Saturday afternoon.85 casks of real ale, 25 ciders and perries andover 12 different types of continental bottledbeers were consumed by a record attendance, the calculated gamble had paid off.Congratulations to the Festival Committee inshowing such a fore thought on this venue.

There are photos and articles about the festivalfrom various people else where in this magazine,so other then to say roll on the next one whichshould be in April 2013, I will leave you to readthe views and comments of others.

It has been a busy time for the committee andothers over the last 4/6 weeks not only with theApril festival, but also with National and Localcampaigns aimed at various issues on going atthe moment.

The first of those was the Community PubCampaign which took place in April and many ofour local pubs displayed literature about thisissue, which we hope you got sight of, if not hereis a brief resume of the campaign aim:

Another campaign which is on going at themo- ment is the campaign on beer duty. In thisyear's Budget the Chancellor put beer duty up byanother 5%. Join the consumer fight back nowand sign the e-petition to secure a Parliamentarydebate and end the escalator!

I/We would like to thank the following Hull Pubs

who very kindly hosted the Branch Openmeetings over the past few months : Sailmakers,High Street, Hull - Green Bricks, Hull Marina -The George, Land of Green Ginger. If you wouldlike to find out what we are up to please feel freeto come along the meeting details are in theBranch Diary on the back page of this publication.Details are also on the Events page on thebranch web site.

Thanks also to William Wilberforce, Trinity HouseLane, and Black Boy, High Street, for the use of aroom for our festival and committee meetings.

Hello BernieI purchased the Hull Brewery Bitter pump clip inthe attached photograph in a recent eBayauction. About £33 as I recall so quite a fewothers keen to obtain it I reckon.Hope your readers might like to see it andperhaps one or a few may remember when itwould have been in use. My guess is early tomiddle 1960’s as it is a style of manufacture(other breweries had different shapes and colourcontrast) I have also seen for Cobb's of Margateand Ann Street of Jersey from that period.Perhaps it will tease out some more photographsof Hull Brewery pump clips (and later incarnationas North Country Breweries) of older or later ilk.Cheers

Have you got any pictures of old Hull Brewerypump clips or can you tell us more about thisone, please send your comments to me and wewill print them in the next issue.

BRANCH POTY 2011 PRESENTATIONS by Kim Hessletine

CAMRA Hull and East Yorkshire Branch Forum .…. 7 ..... Yahoo Group CAMRA Hull & East Yorkshire

We had a gloriously sunny and dare I say hotSunday in March, but it didn’t get off to the beststart for Mike and I. We were late and had tomeet up at the Cornerhouse in Beverley.

The Cornerhouse was runner up in the Towncategory and was a useful meeting point for theBeverley members joining the trip. It had BlackSheep Bitter: Timothy Taylor’s Landlord:Glenhaven Grand Slam: O'Finnigan’s Stout:Abbeydale’s Deception and Black Mass andfinally Greene King Mild.

Peter, the landlord was very pleased to receivethe award but graciously asked if we could returnto officially present it to Charlie, his pub manager,as he had put in all the work for which Peter saidhe was very grateful. It is hoped that we will beable to go back on a Friday evening to do so.

The winner of the Town Pub of the Year is theRose and Crown in Driffield. This is a traditionallocals’ pub with an incredibly popular landlord,Bob Palmer. Bob had returned a few days earlierfrom a holiday to the USA, it did not deter himfrom proving himself worthy of the accolade wethere to present.

There were four cask ales on including, Top ofthe Drops, a 6% IPA especially brewed by

Wold Top to celebrate his win. This is a lovelyhoppy, refreshing brew and perfect for the sunnyday. The other beers were: John Smith’s cask, not my favourite beer but on good form and if itwas always this good I might just change mymind: Sharps: Doombar, a malty, well balancedbeer, mid coloured and on very good form. StAustell Tribute: this is a hoppy beer with a sharp, zesty bite: As with all beers we tried here it wason excellent form.

Bob was over the moon at winning the award andhe thanked his customers for their loyal support, and provided an excellent late lunch.

We also called briefly in at the Duke ofWellington, Lund, not an award winner this yearbut a convenient stop off. They had Wold TopWold Gold: Theakston’s Best Bitter: TimothyTaylor’s Landlord.

Goodmanham Arms at Goodmanham is thewinner of the Village Pub of the Year. This is adog friendly pub full of charm and character.

Some of the group had to finish admiring themotorbikes in the car park before the beersbeckoned. These were: Black Dog Brewery:Rhatas, Salopian: Darwins Origin,Northhumberland: Master Bates: Theakston’sOld Peculier: Bateman’s XXXB: Ilkley Mary Jane:– went off just as we arrived and Wold Top Bitter.Cider available were Westons – 1st Quality.

There was no surprise when this pub wasnominated it is a firm favourite with both localsand those of us who have to travel to sample itsdelights. Although some of the beers were a biton the cold side they were all on very good form.

The presentation photographs of Hull Pub of theYear and runner-up should look remarkablysimilar as both were won by Old Town publicansAlan Murphy and Chrissie Fleming. I have knownthem personally for most of the time they havebeen in Hull and I am consequently well aware ofAlan’s ambition to bring real ale to us, which issomething he is proving more and more.

The pub which won this year was the Lion andKey, which has been totally transformed in thelast two years, currently providing its customerswith a choice of seven real ales and four ciders.

It was Walters the winner in the previous twocompetitions that took the title of runner up. Itprovided the drinker with 11 real ales at the timeof the presentation, but this has since beenvirtually doubled. It has been the practise to listreal ales available however due to the number onoffer and to extent to which they change it is notpractical to do so. The eagle eyed will no doubtrecognise some of the pump badges and thusrecognise some beers on offer that night.

On the evening of the Presentation Crawl thepresentation party also visited Black Boy,Hop and Vine and finally Wellington Inn.All three of these pubs proved yet again that theywere also worthy contenders in this competition.

BRANCH POTY 2011PRESENTATIONS

by Kim Hessletine

Continued from page 7

To say that Vito was pleased to win this award isan understatement as he took it round to show allhis locals, and anyone else who showed theslightest interest.

For us we had the pleasure of a couple of hoursin this delightful village pub, where all customersare treated like friends and enjoy the warmest ofwelcomes in traditional surroundings.

The runner-up in the village category is the Hopeand Anchor at Blacktoft, unfortunately although asmaller presentation group was present when Lizand Eddie Payne were given their award it mustnot detract from the consistency their pubdelivers. Indeed the situation gives a few luckyones a further opportunity to go again. See theSurvey report on page 20 of this issue for thatreport.

All of the pubs who have gained Pub of the YearAwards for 2011, including the runner up in thevillage category, have worked hard and deserveevery success for the coming year and beyond. It is at times like these that I can see how hardthe licensees work, and use the term veryloosely, that CAMRA does both encourage thelandlords and promotes their good work to thegreater population.

Bubwith based specialist delicatessen and off-licence, The Jug & Bottle became the first shopever to retain a prestigious Drinks RetailingAward, when it was named Independent CiderRetailer of the Year for the second year in a rowat a glittering ceremony at The Dorchester Hotelin London recently. This is the third time in thelast four years that The Jug & Bottle has won acategory at The National Drinks Retailing Awardsand they were also runner’s up on two otheroccasions.

Doug & Louise Smith, from this family-runbusiness, are justifiably proud of theachievement. “We continually strive to provide thebest possible range of products for ourcustomers. We also try to offer a high qualitybuying experience, so to receive this recognitionagain is a fantastic honour,” commented Louise.

The Jug & Bottle has had a long-held reputationfor the quality of its’ cider stock and hascontinued to build on this over the last twelvemonths. There are now sixteen different ciders ondraught and more than 90 different bottledvarieties were on offer during 2011. Louiseregularly changes the availability in order to givecustomers plenty of choice.

The result has been a 61% increase in year-on-year sales, which is three times previous annualfigures and Louise feels this is a direct result ofwinning the award in 2011. “The award hasdefinitely helped to raise the profile of the shopand our cider range. We now get regularcustomers travelling over 50 miles to purchasetheir cider!”

In presenting the award, trade journalist & one ofthe judges, Nigel Huddleston said “Few shops doso much to champion cider in the country thanThe Jug & Bottle which has now become adestination store for the cider enthusiast.” Addedto the cider-related products on offer, The Jug &Bottle also stocks a wide range of beers; bothdraught & bottled varieties and wines - most ofwhich can’t be found on the supermarket shelves.A fantastic delicatessen in stunning retailenvironment of the Old Victorian School onBubwith’s Main Street, “makes The Jug & Bottle”,as one judge commented, “a cider nerds heaven!

HULL PUB NEWS by Pete Mason and Jill Walker

Welcome to my last edition of Hull Pub News. Jill is now only selling one cask ale, due toWalker is taking over as Hull Pubs Officer, leaving me with an easier task of covering theeastern half of the East Riding.

Yvette Hardy and Paul Miller have taken overthe Rising Sun on Beverley High Road, about sixhundred yards from their old pub, theWheelhouse. They originally intended runningboth of them together with their other pub, theDuke of York, in Sutton, but were unable toagree suitable terms with Marston’s. The pubopened on Friday 4th May selling four real alesfrom the Marston’s stable and two real ciders. They will be keeping two ciders and a mild onpermanently and there are plans to increase thehand-pumps in due course.

The Wassand Arms, Wassand Street, hasreopened as a Community Pub for the benefit ofthe Echoes Foundation and other local charities. The pub will be open on selected Friday andSaturday nights, and possibly Sundays. Thecharity was founded by Claire Stockton and shewill be supported by bar manager Anna Fox. Theales for the opening were donated by GreatNewsome and Wold Top Breweries.

The Timber Dock Tavern has now reopened asthe Goldcrest after a massive refurbishment, and is selling three Marston’s ales on hand pump.

On Newland Avenue, the Newland Tofts hasopened on the corner of De Grey Street. The pubis named after the original name of NewlandAvenue, and is selling up to four cask ales.

Around the corner on Queens Road, theSt John’s had closed after it is believed that thelandlord had called it a day, and transferred tothe Ravenser on Southcoates Lane. However atthe time of writing, the St John’s is open andunder a temporary manager

The Sandringham, on Paragon Street, is nowselling Tetley Bitter, on hand pump. Hopefully, the Grange Hotel, on Grange Road run by thesame licensee, should also be selling TetleyBitter.

On Hessle Road, the newly refurbished Rayners

disappointingly low sales. However the landladyRose, would like to generate more interest andhas expressed an interest in holding a mini beerfestival later in the year.

The Sailmakers Arms, on St Andrews Quay, opened at the beginning of May after a £120,000refurbishment.

The Tap, on Spring Bank, is back in action.Selling up to 4 cask ales and new managementteam Ashley and Jess say cask sales aregoing very well. They plan to hold a mini beerfestival over the Jubilee weekend and alsooperates a loyalty card for regular customers.

Jill Hamilton, who briefly took over theRavenser, Southcoates Lane in February, is nowin charge at the Ship Inn, in Sutton, and ishoping to increase sales and choice of cask ales.

The Inglemire Pub, (formerly the Inglemire Club)is reportedly now selling cask ales.

Congratulation to the Punch Hotel who havewon a major pub award thanks to two landladieswho have turned its fortunes around.Business partners Leila Bolton and ClaireBennett took over the pub in Queen VictoriaSquare two years ago.

Now they have been rewarded with the title ofCity Centre Pub for the Northern Region in theMarston's Pub of the Year. Leila said: "I'vealways been in the pub trade but was keen to setup my own business, however it just wasn'tfinancially possible by myself. So I asked myfriend Claire, who trained in catering, if she'd liketo join me – and I guess the rest is history. We'veabsolutely no regrets starting up on our own. Welove the job and are really passionate about whatwe do. We're very hands-on landladies. TheMarston's award is the icing on the cake for usas we're a small team and it's great to getrecognition for what we do."

The Punch Hotel will now be put forward againstother Marston pubs for the national prize.Winners will be announced at a ceremony atHotel Du Vin in Birmingham at the end of May.

Good Beer Guide 2012

An update from your local membershipSecretary:How can I get involved in CAMRA, I often hearpeople say. For one thing, keep pubs open bydrinking real ale. Real cask ale cannot be boughtin a supermarket or off-licence, so it is reallyimportant to save pubs to keep the cask aleflowing. Join in campaigns and sign petitions tosave pubs, protest against excessive taxation andpromoting the sale of full pints.

However, on a local level, CAMRA members canalso get involved. We have monthly survey tripsthrough the summer months where we take acoach out to East Yorkshire pubs you might nototherwise get to. Contact Pete Mason and MarkBainton for enquiries (see contacts on page 3).

Also we have some survey crawls covering theless central areas of Hull, again trying to catchsome quality pubs that might not be in your usualdrinking area. Contact Jill Walker for more details. We have monthly Open Meetings in central Hullpubs where you can be involved in the branchdecision making and at the meeting in December, you can have your say about Pubs in the brancharea for the next Good Beer Guide when we voteon the entries.

Finally, how do I know about all these things?Well I send out a monthly newsletter by e mail (bypost if you send me some stamps), we have awebsite (currently being refurbished), a forum fordiscussion, a members’ Yahoo Group for moreimmediate information about pubs and the branchand a Facebook group that is open to membersand non-members alike. The Facebook group is agreat way to let the world know what is going onin pubs near you.

BRAND NEW!!! We are also on Twitter! So tweetaway and let the world know what is happening inHull and East Yorkshire. Access to these sitescan be found elsewhere in this magazine, but ifyou have any problems in access, just drop mean e-mail at [email protected] . Many people say, I drink the ale and that’s theway to support CAMRA. This is really importantand I encourage everyone to give this verypractical support. However, the campaigningCAMRA has undertaken over more than 40 yearswould not have happened without willingvolunteers and (let’s be realistic) the subs thatmembers have paid over that period. With anational figure of over 130,000 members, andlocally more than 700 members, CAMRA hasbeen described as the most successful consumercampaign in Europe.

But what about now in 2012? We still needvolunteers to run beer festivals, survey and selectGOOD BEER GUIDE entries, share informationabout quality ales and pubs and to keepcampaigning on the beer/pub related issues ofthe day – and yes, the campaign still needsfinances to function. However, you receive anequal return on the money you pay in subs (ornearly if non-direct debit) in vouchers forWetherspoons at the present time.

Traditional advantages of membership are:v Be a member of the most successfulconsumer organisation in Europe;v Be part of a social and active branch withmany events throughout the year;v Be involved by nominating and selecting thepubs included in the Good Beer Guide;v Receive a monthly copy of the ‘What’sBrewing’ CAMRA newspaper, providing the latestnews on CAMRA nationally and details of beerfestivals and social events;v Receive a quarterly copy of the CAMRAmagazine, ‘Beer,’ offering informative articlesabout many subjects related to beer and cider;v Receive a branch newsletter bi-monthly,updating you on all the local news and activities(Hull and East Yorkshire branch members only);v Receive discounts on the RRP of manyCAMRA products including the best selling Goodbeer Guide;v Enjoy free or discounted entry to beerfestivals;

More recent advantages include:Ø!Increasing numbers of pubs nationally areoffering discounts on real ale to CAMRAmembership card holders;

Ø! £20 of vouchers for real ale atWetherspoons pubs (40 fifty pence vouchers);Ø Discounts on holidays, insurance and otheroffers from reputable companies (see nationalwebsite for the latest offers);Ø More information about real cider and whereto find it

EAST YORKSHIRE SURVEY TRIP

Our trips to survey for 2014 Good Beer Guidehave started. We began with the Hope andAnchor at Blacktoft, which was the runner up inthe most recent Pub of the Year competition(2011). Four real ales to include one guest arestandard here, licensees Eddie and Liz usuallyhave a mild, for some time this has beenJennings Dark Mild, which was appreciated bymany.

After all too brief a visit we went on toGilberdyke, with two options in Wards Hotel andthe Cross Keys. We were not aware that theprevious licensees have moved on from WardsHotel, however we were able to try GreeneKing’s London’s Glory and at the Cross Keysthere were three real ales of varying quality.

The third stop was White Hart, in North Cavewhere we received the usual friendly welcomefrom Tracey and Glen. There was better newshere, they have moved the real ale so all handpumps are now in the front bar, and increased tothe choice to four, which including the self-styleWhite Hart 1776, was an excellent example ofthe variety a free house can offer.

At the Triton Inn a further hand pump has alsobeen added, providing another Wold Top - WoldGold. I appreciated the opportunity to thankowner Paul for his continuing support of CAMRA,he gives discount and is currently promoting thee-petition against ascending beer duty.

Then to Welton in the Green Dragon we wereable again enjoy 10% discount on our choicefrom the four real ales from the Marston’sportfolio. Lastly, we ended the evening at WeltonMemorial Hall, Black Sheep Bitter was the orderof the day. Whilst this is a members’ club it is theepitome of the community local.

Many of the pubs visited vary their choices, mostof what was available is not likely to be availablewhen you read this,so in the spirit of what asurvey trip is about - to find out what is available- try to find the time to try these places yourself. We are losing too many rural pubs, and considerthe e-petition at CAMRA.ORG.UK/saveyourpintplease as it impacts on us all. Thanks to Markhis first trip was a resounding success!

HULL REAL ALE AND CIDER FESTIVAL 2012 REPORT

As reported on the front page of this edition ofPub Mirror our annual beer and cider festival wasan overwhelming success and yes we ran out ofbeer. We knew we were on a sticky wicket whenby close of play on Thursday we had already runout of 9 beers and we had to order more in. In factin total we had 85 beers on offer over the 3 (sorry2 and a bit days), which was the same as at theMortimer Suite last year, which we had some 8beers left over. Ciders and bottle also ran out, again better then last year when we had 3 cidersand numerous bottles left.

The Festival Committee would like to thank all thecustomers without whom this would not had beenso successful, but also to the volunteers fromCAMRA, the church, the musicians and thecatering staff, your efforts were much appreciated.

Neal Barnes the vicar of Holy Trinity commentedon the festival"As far as I'm concerned I thought that it was atruly excellent event, and well run by CAMRA.The atmosphere was great - and all verygood natured. It was wonderful to see so manypeople come in to the church and then enjoy agood drink or two, friendly conversation and allwithin stunning surroundings. The mediacoverage was exceptional, both for the event, for

CAMRA and for Holy Trinity. Many people told methat they had lived in the area all their lives andyet never come into Holy Trinity - and now theyrealise what a splendid building we have at theheart of Hull.

My colleagues and I had some fascinatingconversations with people at the Festival. MattWoodcock, our Pioneer Minster, had the privilegeof praying with someone - whilst he had a beer inhis hand! I genuinely hope that CAMRA and HolyTrinity can work together to stage a festival in2013 - and with even more beers!"

As Reverend Barnes said the coverage from themedia was staggering, we had all the local mediaat the event, plus national coverage on ‘5 live’and via the Press Association, here are some ofthings that they said:

Hull Daily Mail: ‘Drinkers gathered around thepews today as the Hull Real Ale and CiderFestival opened at Holy Trinity Church. It is the first time the event, which is organised bythe Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA branch, hastaken place at the 700-year old church, which isalso the festival charity.

Yorkshire Post: ‘A Hull vicar has welcomed realale lovers into his church for a beer festival, saying he thought it was the kind of event Jesuswould have enjoyed. Pioneer minister the RevMatt Woodcock said: "I think Jesus was all aboutpeople engaging in their everyday lives andwasn't someone who would have expectedpeople to come into some big holy moment. The festival, which began in 1978, is expected tosee 5,500 pints consumed over the next threedays.’

BBC North: Thousands of real ale lovers arebeing welcomed into an East Yorkshire churchfor a beer festival. The Hull Real Ale and CiderFestival is being held at Holy Trinity Church, in

Hand Pump Area

HULL REAL ALE AND CIDER FESTIVAL REPORT 2012

the city centre, for the first time. The Reverend DrNeal Barnes, vicar of Holy Trinity, said he was"partial to a glass of real ale" and he wanted tosupport local businesses who were involved inthe festival, which is in its 34th year. "I'm surethose attending will respect our wonderfulbuilding and drink responsibly," he said

Among the many customer the comments wereof the same elk and here are a few of themcourtesy of Hull Daily Mail and Yorkshire Post;

Kevin Dalton, 60, a civil servant from Beverley, who was sampling a pint of Sledgehammer Stout– the strongest available at 7.4 per cent – said:“It’s very interesting, it’s a nice place to visit.”

Paul Williams, a CAMRA member who had comefrom Scunthorpe for the launch, said: "I think it is

stunning. I go to a festival in Gainsborough thattakes place in a venue dating from Henry VIII butthis goes back even further than that. I havealready sent back photographs to members whocould not make it today. Beer and stained glass -what more could you want?"

Mark Bateman, of West Hull, just managed tomake the festival in time before the beer ran out.He said: "I have just signed up with CAMRA. Isaw on Twitter there was a limited supply of beerleft so we got down at noon. The atmosphere wasvery good and I think the venue was the realwinner. There was a nice mix of real ale andculture and that's what it's all about. There was avaried mix of ales even though much of it had runout but it was certainly worthwhile going."

The Hull & East Yorkshire branch of CAMRAhave a separate festival committee and we aresure that they will be recommending a return tothis most historic and impressive venue for nextyears festival. Already dates have been offeredfor the same time of year, so we will keep youinformed of the progress through this publicationand our very successful festival blog page.

Finally once again a big thank you to everyonewho made this festival such a success and to oursponsors and supporters without whom we couldnot have held it.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers?Smooth beers are brewed in much the

same way as real ale but eventually thenatural yeast is killed and processed togive longer shelf life. The dead beer isthen resurrected by means of chemicalsand served chilled by gas pressurethrough fonts. Smooth beer sales arealso known as nitro-keg beer.

REAL ALE v SMOOTH

What is Real Ale?Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to

ferment and develop its full flavour in thecask.Real Ale is brewed from traditional

ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeastmatured by secondary fermentation in thecontainer from which it is dispensed, andserved without the extraneous use ofcarbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps.Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask

Claire & I had a trip out to Driffield on the train onSaturday May 5th. Here are our findings: TheSidings is now called Buffers(restaurant); wedidn't have a drink there but they had BlackSheep Best on.

Tiger had John Smith’s cask plus 3 guests, theRobinson's Crusoe was good.

We popped into the Star for a half which was ingood condition.

The Bell had 2 Wold Top beers on, which werein better condition than recent visits.

While in this vicinity I checked Georgie's Bar,they had Caledonian Flying Scotsman, FullMeasure; Jennings Cumberland and OriginalKeys; Ringwood Fortyniner.

The Rose & Crown was superb.

We called back at the Red Lion. They only hadGreene King IPA on which was in good condition.

We wanted to eat here although we weren'toverly hungry. Well too bad because the portionswere VERY generous. My all day breakfast couldhave fed 2 people.

Popped over to the Benjamin Fawcett and hada nice dark beer from Conwy brewery.

We finished in a very quiet Mariners but I haveto say the Ringwood Boondoggle was my beer ofthe day; very well kept.

We also put our heads in the door of the Buck;John Smith’s only, Full Measure; Cumberlandand Spread Eagle; John Smith’s

We had a look in the door of the Blue Bell,Riverhead after walking over the footbridge, which although having John Smith’s and Tetleys, neither were available( on a Saturday of a BankHoliday ?)

Unfortunately the Falcon had no Real Ale. All inall a great day out and can be visited by bus andrail.

In depths of deepest Lincolnshire a few milesfrom Louth lays the quiet, ancient hamlet ofSkidbrooke. Here you can find a top ciderproducer in the form of Guy Williams, Guy kindlyshowed us round and answered all our searchingquestions with ease.

Hailing from Somerset, Guy met Lincolnshire ladyKate and moved from West to East more than tenyears ago. He soon found that he was missing hisfavourite tipple from the south west and began togather windfalls of apples and made smallbatches of cider. Not surprisingly the word spreadamongst friends and as well as coming to drinkhis cider they also brought apples and the upwardspiral of production started. Research led Guy todiscover that although cider production hadvirtually ceased many years ago there were still anumber of Victorian orchards in the area andonce the word was out apples also came fromlocal orchards or the family were invited to collect.

At first he began with just 100 gallon batches butto meet demand new orchards were planted andtwo 500 litre filling tanks, three 2,100 litrefermentation tanks and nine French oak barrelswere purchased. The current fermentation kitcurrently consists of four 2100 litre stainlesstanks, eight 500 litre tanks (four of which arestainless vari-fill), six French oak "standard"barrels, fourteen French oak 300 litre barrels, six50 gallon rum barrels and eight 1520 litreconverted orange juice containers.

Apples are harvested and processed fromSeptember to November (thus explaining whyCAMRA’s designated cider month is mid-season– October).

The apples are milled, packed into cheese

cloths, stacked into a press and squeezed withintense pressure. All pips, cores and skins areused. In today’s terms t he operation is “green”as there are no additives (not even water), anywaste is used for animal feed and the number offood miles is extremely low. There are healthbenefits too due to the high•concentration ofphenols and antioxidants which boost immunityto illness. Although single variety ciders areproduced much of the cider-makers art is toblend varieties to achieve an overall wellbalanced, flavoursome cider. Recently, dessertand cider apples have replaced cooking varietiesleading to more mellow flavours.

Following a month of fermentation the cider isthen left to store over the winter months resultingin a delightful 5.5% ABV pure product. It isracked off at least twice to ensure the endproduct is clear and untainted and some of thecider is transferred to oak barrels to mature.Nothing is pasteurised or carbonated.

Today, Skidbrooke Cider is a staple local farm-shop product with more than 4000 gallonsproduced each year that is now spreading itswings as far as Devon in the South West andNewcastle in the North East due to a growingreputation via discerning distributors andfestivals. Ironically/paradoxically it has eventurned full circle and reached Somerset. Sales ofDry and Vintage cider are supplemented withcider vinegar, mead, honey chutney and jelliesand are proving very popular.

Guy intends to restore his huge 18th centurywooden press and looking long term he hasplanted over 600 apple trees of various varietiessome of which have been planted in a 45 acretraditional order due to reach its prime in 2060 noless.

Three London breweries are opening their doorsto auction bidders at this year’s Great BritishBeer Festival at Olympia in celebration of LondonCity of Beer. Every session, you can bid for aplace on a brewery trip to Sambrook's, BrewWharf and Kernel. The trip should be one toremember. Taking place on Saturday 8th

September, there will be a chance to look aroundthese three breweries and a chance to meet thebrewers and sample some of their deliciouswares.

The trip starts at 11am at Sambrook's (neareststation is Clapham Junction) and a light lunch isprovided. Established in 2008, Sambrook's wasat the vanguard of the new breweries that haveset up in London over the last few years and thebrewery has gone from strength to strength, withtheir beers being found across London. This is achance to see the recently expanded newbrewery.

Then a short trip to London Bridge and into BrewWharf (next door to Vinepolis) to see the smallbrewery at the back of the pub, where one ofLondon's innovative brewers is. Brew Wharf wasat the beginning of Britain's love of big flavouredAmerican and now have moved on to otherimported hops and each beer has a differentrecipe so visitors will be in for a treat.

The finale is walk away to a brewer thatspecialises in bottled beer. Kernel, which came

into being in 2008, is based in Borough. It isanother brewer that loves big flavours; strongIPAs and porters are the order of the day andpromises to end the day on a high.

And this year's Brewer for a Day is equallyenticing. The award winning, ThornbridgeBrewery in Derbyshire is hosting the Brewer forthe Day in their old brewery in Thornbridge Hall, which they set up in 2005 (they now have twobreweries). Thornbridge Hall is a private statelyhome with a history back to the 12th Century andis set in 100 acres of parkland. The house was owned by the Longsdon familyfor circa 700 years and since the late 1700’s, thehouse has been have enlarged and altered. There is a William Morris/Burne-Jones windowand even a private railway station.Particularly known for its strong Jaipur IPA,Thornbridge is offering the lucky winner overnightaccommodation for two in Sheffield, transport tothe brewery and a day's brewing including lunch.

THE SWAN, BEVERLEY ROAD report from Hull Daily Mail

A PUBLIC inquiry may decide the fate of Hull'sremaining monument to the Blitz as the deadlinefor negotiations looms. The National Civilian WW2 Memorial Trust wantsto turn the bombed National Picture Theatre inBeverley Road into a Blitz memorial. The trust is in talks with owner Reid ParkProperties to buy the site and has revealed itnow has £150,000 available to from privatebackers. But there is a disagreement over the price with adiscrepancy of about £100,000. If a deal cannotbe reached by August 1, a public inquiry will beheld to decide whether or not the owner canmake changes to the listed building.Alan Canvess, of the trust, said: "The plans toturn the building into apartments and a restaurantwill require changes to the listed building."We contacted the Secretary of State's officeasking for a public inquiry, which was accepted."It was agreed between ourselves, the ownerand Hull City Council that preparations for anyinquiry would be put on hold until August 1 togive us all a chance to thrash out a deal to buythe site. If that doesn't prove successful, the

public inquiry will take place around two monthslater."The trust has been given planning permission toturn the dilapidated National Picture Theatre inBeverley Road, Hull, into a memorial site with aneducation centre.Reid Park Properties has also been givenpermission to turn the building into apartmentsand a restaurant. If no deal can be reached, Mr Canvess believeseverything hinges on the outcome of the publicinquiry. He said: "If the owner is successful at thepublic inquiry then he has full permission to goahead with what he wants to do."But if he loses, he can't do anything with thesite, which puts us in a much stronger position."The owner still insists the site is worth £250,000but we spent £1,000 on a district valuer who putit at between £130,000 to £150,000."We have now raised £150,000 and are stilllooking to get more."We will keep plugging away and hope the owneris responsive."Reid Properties declined to comment butconfirmed it was in negotiations with the trust

Mike Harding, a new Patron for the Beverley

Festival, obviously believes Beverley is the

festival to be at this Summer. Presenter of BBC

Radio 2’s folk show on Wednesday nights, he

has been a good friend and follower of the

festival for many years.

The festival is delighted to have him on board

demonstrating his trust in the weekend as a great

event.

“Beverley has always been a special festival for

me. It's not too big and they always have some

great acts. Held in the beautiful market town of

Beverley, in the heart of the East Yorkshire

Wolds, winning acclaim as one of the best small

festivals in the country and one of the most

family friendly. With this year’s attractions –

Steeleye Span, Peatbog Faeries,

Chumbawamba, Martin Carthy, up and coming

young band ahab, plus special guest - 60's Rock

& Roller Joe Brown, it looks likely to maintain its

deserved reputation.” Mike Harding

Responses from audiences agreed with Mike,

voting - the line-up, the great location, and the

friendliness of the event amongst its most

popular attractions. “The intimacy of the Beverley

Festival, with its palpable sense of community

and warmth, is very much a part of the lure”…...

“Really good festival. Liked the combination of

main events being in a building and others in

marquees. Great atmosphere” ….“What a

thoroughly entertaining event and such

distinctively different styles, it was a good choice

of programming. In addition the icing on the cake

was the bar and excellent Festival Ale, We

thought the atmosphere very friendly and indeed

so in the town”.

On the edge of Hockney country and only a

short drive from the east coast’s Heritage Coast

and its sandy beaches and tall cliffs, it makes a

great place for a weekend away – lots of music

as well as places to go for a bit of time out.

The festival is renowned for always producing a

great and innovative line-up, with a combination

of artists that will not be seen at other events

around the country this summer.

The legendary folk rockers Steeleye Span and

Joe Brown head the bill this year along with

Celtic dance phenomenon the Peatbog Faeries.

The latest addition to the line up is the amazing

new band The Mighty Doonans. This new band

has developed from the redoubtable “Doonan

Family Band who have been part of the English

folk scene for many years. The Doonans have a

deserved reputation for their imaginative and

innovative interpretations of traditional songs and

ability to introduce other genres of music and

dance to their thoroughly entertaining

performances.

The line up includes Mick Doonan, Phil Murray,

Kevin Doonan, Stu Luckley, Ian Fairbairn,

Rosie Doonan, Jamie Luckley, Ben Murray

and Frances Doonan.

Rosie Doonan has been touring with Peter

Gabriel as part of his band and support – she

was recently spotted on BBC2 adding vocals

when they performed on ‘Later with Jools

Holland.’ She will be joining him again for dates

this year – no doubt including again the stunning

duet on the classic ‘Don’t Give Up.’

From the USA comes the amazing Abigail

Washburn with Kai Welch who will be

performing on Friday night along with popular

Scottish band Shooglenifty who will be treating

festival goers to their special brand of “acid-

croft.”

Other artists include, Martin Carthy,

Chumbawamba, Coope Boyes & Simpson,

Henry Priestman, and Peter Robinson, author

of DI Banks series of books as featured on ITV

with Stephen Tompkinson, and poet

extraordinaire Ian McMillan and Luke Carver-

Goss.

Many more great acts can be found by going to

the festival’s website –www.beverleyfestival.com

A wide range of concerts and activities for those

attending the event, with a special emphasis on

families and children, makes the event a perfect

weekend for all.

PUB MIRROR ON TOUR by David Litten

Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA on facebook ...… 42 ...... Branch Website at www.hullcamra.org.uk

At Easter, Pub Mirror went on holiday, jauntingaround Belgium once again in the company ofWakefield CAMRA!After an overnight journey to Dover and an earlyGood Friday morning crossing to Calais it was notvery long before we reached the Gulden SpoorBrouwerij in Gullegem, West Flanders at around9.00am. The brewer was at work preparing his nextcreation whilst being interrogated by eager beernuts who consumed copious amounts of his bottleddelights. What a way to start!

After a snooze on the coach we reached our basefor the weekend, the Center Hotel in Kortrijk. TodayKortrijk is the most important city in southernWest-Flanders with several hospitals, colleges anda university. It was the very first city in Belgium witha pedestrian shopping street and today this hasexpanded across much of the historical city centre. The hotel was located close to the main squarewhere the week long funfair was in full swing. Tooloud man! Following a wash and brush up severalof the local cafes were visited, the highlights beingthe Gainsbar (for interesting beers) and theBoulevard (for intimate atmosphere and qualitybeers).

Day two was one of contrasts. The morning saw avisit to Brasserie St. Feullien in Hainaut which hasrecently been modernising. However, we had aninteresting tour around the old brewery which is setto become a museum. The new kit was thenviewed and approved and followed by a generoustasting session and the purchase of carry-outs.

We retired to Mons for lunch and more beer at theelegant Excelsior in the Grand Place before takingto the road for the 15 mile journey to theAuthentique Brasserie at Blaton. Frederick was notaware that we were coming, but nevertheless, itwas an interesting small brewery using old dairyequipment. Some good stuff too.

The first visit on Easter Sunday was to the verynew De Plukker brewery near Poperinge. Theyuse their own organic hops in their excellent beer

and also export hops to

Thereafter followed a fish lunch stop at the alwaysexcellent Poussecafe in Poperinge, washed downwith a local beer of course. A short ride took us tothe In De Vrede at Westvleteren. This is the verycommercial brewery tap for the world famousbeers brewed by Trappist monks across the road. This sparkling, all new cafe replaced the old simplebuilding some time ago. The service and quality ofwhat is thought by many to be the best beer in theworld was first class.

Before returning to base we stopped in Ypres towitness the last post and the opportunity to bumpinto a fellow CAMRA chap from Hull. Amazing!

Monday morning saw us back in Hainaut visitingBrasserie Ellezelloise complete with tasting boardsand the popular spaghetti bolognaise. Oh, thatHercule Stout – only 9.0% ABV!

It was back to West Flanders in the afternoon forthe trip’s final brewery and its tasting cafe –T’Gaverhopke. Here, several beers were eagerlyconsumed with the fruit ones being particularlypopular.

The evening was spent revisiting the best cafes inKortrijk before an early start on Tuesday for thetrek home. Another great holiday for Pub Mirrorand its companions, with next year’s destination ofchoice being Mechelen.
