Dr. Seuss Week—March 5th-9th Stu-

dents can look forward to fun activities

celebrating Dr. Seuss and reading all

week long. Thanks to Mrs. Kelly for

planning this fun week!

The Crestwood Primary staff spent waiver day in February analyzing the new

common core standards for math. Teams of teachers studied the changes in the

math common core program to plan for implementation during the 2012-13

school year. The second half of the day the staff trained other staff members on

the use of iPad apps and clickers in the classroom. The Crestwood Primary staff

are working on implementing the science and technology grant in collaboration

with Hiram College students. The teachers are preparing for a science and Tech-

Preschool

The preschoolers were busy this month working on the letters x, y,

z, and the numbers 3 and 4. Throughout the lessons the pre-

schoolers used shaving cream, rice, pudding, and play dough to

explore theses concepts. Mrs. Marlow implemented a new Friday

enrichment program for four year olds incorporating math and

technology based on the kindergarten math standards.

The Ready Schools team completed a family friendly survey about

Crestwood Primary School. The team also planned a collaboration

meeting with all the area preschools to improve the transition pro-

cess from preschool to kindergarten.

Thank you for all your support to make Crestwood Primary a

great school!

After the recent tragic events I would like to reassure all families that we are being very vigilant about safety

at Crestwood Primary School. The staff has been trained in A.L.I.C.E. which stands for Alert, Lockdown,

Inform, Counter and Evacuate. We will have an A.L.I.C.E. meeting on Wednesday, March 14 at 7:00 in the

CPS cafeteria. We appreciate all the parents who have offered to assist in our building at this time. We have

Kindergarten

This month the kindergarten students

were busy identifying several letters and

sounds. They have been working hard

learning twenty four sight words. They

learned position words and directional

words in math. They all worked on pro-

jects that had to do with the 100th day

of school. Each classroom did their own

activities to celebrate the day. Each

child needs to know their phone number

and address for safety reasons. They

should be able to write and relate num-

bers from 0-9 also.

Classroom Happenings

First Grade Our first graders are pictured below exhibit-ing examples of friendship. The first grad-ers completed a character educa-tion unit on get-ting along with others through cooperation and using kind words. The first graders have started their “Flat Stanley” projects in social studies that helps reinforce map skills, geography and reading. We have Flat Stanleys visiting all over the world! Hiram College students have helped us learn about science with weekly visits to our classrooms. We are also celebrating the books of Dr. Seuss during Right to Read Week by reading many books and using them as the basis for many fun activities!

Second GradeSecond GradeSecond GradeSecond Grade

Our second graders have been busy working on science projects for our upcoming Science and

Technology night by researching animals in various habitats. They have also been working to

explore new technology through the use of clickers and iPads. Second graders in Ms. Boyle and

Mrs. Grebb’s classes enjoyed time with buddies from the High School FCCLA program. The Bud-

dy Book Day included reading a penguin book to and with a buddy, completing a penguin glyph,

and writing a journal entry about our day. During the weeks of March 12-21 our second graders

will take the OGAT tests. Please try to make sure your child attends school each day and eats a

healthy breakfast during these two weeks.

Community Service Project

The students at Crestwood Primary School spent their time in Physical Education jumping rope. Students participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. They collected donations from friends and family and jumped rope for the contributions. Students had the opportunity to create a web page to promote a healthy life style through exercise and healthy eating habits. This is the second year Crestwood Pri-mary students participated in this event. To date they have

collected $1,012.00. Way to go!!

Students in Mrs. Reese's kindergarten class listen to their hearts as part of a "Healthy Hearts" class taught by school nurse, Mrs. Abruzino. Students learned how the heart works, and how exercise, healthy eating and not smoking

help to keep the heart healthy.
