Northern Star Launches “SIKAP, TULONG, SULONG!” Upon their return to their classrooms on August 1, 2106, the students of the Laoag Central Elementary School (LCES) in Ilocos Norte were pleasantly surprised to find newly-painted walls, fixed door hinges, and repaired chairs, desks and shelves. This was thanks to the 92 employees, partners and friends of Northern Star Energy Corporation (NSE), Chevron Philippines’ 2015 Top Branded Marketer Awardee, who took part in the launching activity of “SIKAP, TULONG, SULONG! Maayos na Paaralan, Maayos na Kinabukasan” or STS. The volunteers, who came from as far away as Manila, Abra, Cagayan and La Union, gathered on July 30 to selflessly devote their weekend to the repair and renovation of selected classrooms of LCES. STS is the first of a series of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities designed by NSE to give back to the communities in which they operate. NSE partnered with Renovate to Educate (RED) for the project, providing funds for the purchase of materials and operational expenses, as well as, galvanizing volunteers from its staff and business partners to lend the needed manpower for the endeavor. “It is commendable for NSE to initiate this activity,” said Richard Hawkins, Chief Strategy Officer of PTC Holdings of which NSE is a subsidiary. “For many, the repairs may seem to be minor but to the pupils of Laoag Central Elementary School, these are major improvements.” Hawkins flew all the way from Manila to work with the other volunteers. In total, the volunteers repainted five classrooms and a hallway, retouched four murals; fixed five doors; and repaired nine tables, three library shelves, five teacher’s tables and 39 chairs. “What impressed me the most was the teamwork that everyone displayed as they were fixing the school furniture,” said Delgado in a personal note of thanks to the volunteers. “Everyone was working together efficiently. This teamwork is what separates NSE from our competitors.” Apart from initiatives on education, STS is also envisioned to engage in projects focusing on health, environment and values formation. As its name implies, with the joint passion and effort (SIKAP) of the community, volunteers and friends, and the support (TULONG) of NSE, communities can improve their lives and move forward (SULONG). PTC-MIT Coffee Hour Discusses Sustainability in Engineering Last July 18, the PTC-MIT Coffee Hour welcomed Dr. Oral Buyukozturk, a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), to discuss sustainability with an audience of PTC executives and senior managers. Dr. Buyukozturk is the founder of the MIT Laboratory for Infrastructure Science and Sustainability (LISS) which aims to contribute to societal and economic development through detailing the sustainability of existing physical infrastructures and enhancing the design of new systems. “Sustainability is a fashion nowadays,” said Dr. Buyukozturk. “But the concept is often used so loosely that many people are unsure of what it really means.” Defining sustainability in engineering terms, Dr. Buyukozturk shared how he and his team are developing scientific knowledge and technology that enable innovative designs for the most durable and sustainable physical infrastructure projects in the world today. One such example is his involvement with the Kuwait MIT Center where he is helping establish knowledge for the efficient development of Kuwait’s new cities like the “Silk City” (Madinat al-Hareer) which will feature skyscrapers standing up to 1,000 meters in height.
