Incredibly, we got very lucky with the weather and could soak in the experience in the beautiful sunshine. Based on the number of people who turned up, all the smiling faces and all the lovely comments we received, the fair was a runaway success! It featured a water fight area that was hugely popular, bouncy castles, fire engines and police cars, archery, face painting, obstacle course, boxercise, beer tent, BBQ, candy floss, ice cream, raffles, adult and children tombola, karate and cheerleading shows, choir performances, lots and lots of games, rock and sand shop and vendor stalls. The fair also hosted the Ancient Geeks band, who created a wonderful festival atmosphere, and Livewire Rock Academy, who provided on the spot music lessons. As you may know, the summer fair is the single biggest event of the PTA calendar and a huge effort to organise and run. It is in fact the result of the dedicated work of a huge number of people, including not only the PTA reps, but all the class reps and all those who tirelessly helped on the day! It is, in fact, thanks to the achievement of all you that the fair was such a great success! We thank you all! Year after year, this wonderful show of community sprit is what makes our work worthwhile. Thank you! Thanks are due to all our sponsors, who donated the 45 prizes for the raffle; it raised £1,283 at the fair. Thank you! Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to all of you who made it to the fair, brought your family or told your friends to come and supported the school by spending generously at the fair! We hope you enjoyed your time and found the experience worthwhile! At the last count, the fair raised a total sum of £3,885.38! This money is being used towards the upgrade of the pupils’ IT equipment in preparation for a new IT curriculum from September. Summer fair thank you’s - July 3

Well done to the riders of the 2nd PTA ridathon, who covered 22 miles (down from 35 miles last year) and 8 pubs (up from 6 pubs last year - I wonder if the latter was the cause of the drop in the former statistic :) ), ending the trip in Cheshunt. Riders contributed £10 each to the PTA to be part of this gruelling challenge, raising a total of £70. Thanks to Colin Harris for organising!

The Sponsored bounce event is one the biggest PTA fundraisers of the year, but, most of all, it is always a fun and memorable day for the children. On the day, infant pupils have 2 minutes in which to bounce as many times as possible on a bouncy castle, while juniors tackle an obstacle course to complete laps. This year, the children also earned badges in recognition of their achievements. While everyone deserved a big well done and a thank you for their impressive efforts on the bouncy castle or obstacle course, we would like to give special mentions to the following three pupils for their extraordinary achievements:

Liam Allen (Reception - Ash Class), who raised a truly outstanding £340 for the school.

Conran Fleet (Year 1 - Cherry Class), who achieved the most bounces of 204.

Coby Pyatt (Year 2 - Oak Class), who raised £153.50.

There wasn’t a clear winner in KS2 as all children did exceptionally well on the obstacle course and their scores were all very close, so big well done to them all.

The total raised (up to the time of writing) is £3,475, with a few more pledges still outstanding. Thanks to everyone who contributed and sponsored a Summercroft pupil! Your generosity is much appreciated!

Bike ride report - June 4

We would like to offer a HUGE thank you to everyone, who helped with this event; without all of you, it simply wouldn't have been possible: Yoko Knight, Kristin Clarke, Deepa Azad, Maria Costa, Anna Marsal, Wendy-Jo Marchant, Sue Flett, Karen Wadsworth, Sabah Fadil, Allison Humphreys, Mel Sturgeon, Sarah Clements, Gaynor Purton and Julie Goodeve. Extra special mention to our all-dayers: Sarah Fach and Joanne Rowley. Special thanks to Michelle Cundall and Colin Harris (PTA reps) for organising and running the event!

Gaynor and Stuart Purton masterminded, organised and run the quiz night on Friday, May 13, 2016. Here is their summary of the night:

Well what a noisy night! It started off quite tame, but before long, the competitiveness kicked in and the noise built up. Thank you to the 9 teams that attended and battled their way through six rounds of questions, culminating in the Lyrics round, where extra points could be earned by being the loudest. This was recorded on a decibel meter that hit 120 decibels!

Tensions were high towards the end with only ½ point between 1st & 2nd place, but due to their volume The Cherry Poppers took the top spot, closely followed by A Pizza the Action. Joint last place was shared between The Pizza Guys & The Four Hopes (not bad as only 4 in their team).

The teachers battled it out with a team from KS1 and a team from KS2. KS1 lost that battle and extra kudos to KS2 team with the Team Name, Quizzy McQuiz Face.

The evening was interspersed with a couple of rounds of Heads & Tails, with £20 going to the winner and the Raffle, 1st prize going to Miss Roach (Yr1). We are pleased to announce that you raised £520.

Special thanks to our helpers – Mark and Angela Gatland for being on the ball, Jenni and Paul Cobbett for table arrangements! Thanks to the school office ladies for their help with selling the tickets. Thank you to all those who attended and we hope to see you at the next one – unless you want to have a go at running the next one!

This event was again organised by Gaynor Purton and here is how she summed up the evening:

This was an enlightened evening, where 17 ladies took on each other in defending themselves! It was a real eye opener into what you could do to protect yourself and the pressure points to aim for on your attacker.

Instructors Claire and Neil were professional and knowledgeable yet made the evening a fun one. Time ran away with us and went past the allocated 2hrs as we had more and more questions and they highlighted different forms of defence.

Quiz night report - May 13

Self defence classes (ladies) - May 3

Thank you to all the ladies who attended and I hope you never have to use what were you were taught, but best keep practising on your partners. :)

The PTA were pleased to fund these classes at £480 for all KS2 pupils to have a 1hr self-defence session during the school day.

The instructors, Claire & Neil, covered numerous aspects of self defence, specifically targeted at children’s self defence and abduction prevention and defence, including what and who to be aware of and stranger danger. Apparently, the instruction to let your mobile phone be taken by a thief came as a shock to some!

The instructors remained on site for the whole day so that pupils who wanted to drop in and ask any questions could do so. The feedback from both staff and pupils was very good with some of the moves being demonstrated in assembly. We hope that the children came home and showed you some of what they had been taught. Thanks to Claire & Neil from CHKA Karate Hertfordshire for offering the PTA a heavily discounted price and for engaging the pupils so well. Thanks to Gaynor Purton for organising the logistics.

The cake sale was organised and run by Marie Christine Ruser. It was coupled, for the first time, with a Summercroft Cafe from 2-3pm, where parents/carers were invited to drop in and enjoy one of Marie’s delicious home made cakes with a cup of tea or coffee. Many thanks to Marie for organising this and raising £170 for the school.

In September, we will be back with some more events and the PTA 100 club will also be restarting - more about these in the autumn. In the meantime, wishing you all a relaxing summer holiday!

As always, we would love to hear from you! You can get in touch by emailing us at [email protected] or by connecting on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/summercroft.pta/
