FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY

Dear Readers... Half term nearly upon us and I don’t know about you but I certainly feel ready for a break! Those dark, early mornings are taking their toll so any extra time in bed will be most welcome! If you’re looking for things to do with the kids at half term, there are some great activities on at the Fashion Museum in Bath and at the Roman Baths or how about potato printing at Monkton Elm Garden Centre? There’s a whole potato festival going on including a family treasure hunt for missing King Edward (my personal favourite for roasting!) With Valentine’s Day later in the month, we couldn’t resist bringing you a few romantic poems along the Roses are red theme and for those who really want to impress, there’s a delicious recipe for heart-shaped jammie dodgers!

It’s a nice short month so not long now and we’ll be into Spring!

After the heavy rainfall and dark skies that the winter months have brought with them, the lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two, and new-born lambs jumping around the local fields, are the first signs of Spring.

At Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre, lambing season is in full swing. If you haven’t been to the College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 16 March.

Lambing Fun DayThe event improves year on

year, with more to see and do than ever before – and this year’s very special guest is Tractor Ted – a real favourite of the young and young at heart! Tickets can be bought on the day, or with a 20% discount if bought in advance. Advance tickets can be bought through the College’s online store: www.bridgwater.ac.uk

There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep dog demonstrations, sheep shearing, milking demon-strations, ferret racing and tractor trailer rides, plus many more. There will be marquees

dedicated to food and drink and children’s activities, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs.

Jeremy Kerswell, Head of Land-based Studies at the College says: “This event is always very popular and a great way for the community to see the College’s working farm in Cannington. So many people put on their wellies and join us for the day, immersing themselves in all the activities and watching the demon-strations. The tractor trailer rides and sheep shearing are especially popular with the

children, and everyone enjoys browsing the product stalls and sampling local produce, available to buy.

“We’ve often had lambs born during the event day, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback we receive from the public is always very positive, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and meeting many new visitors to Rodway Farm.”

Running after kids all day can be exhausting, especially when you are carrying extra pounds. When was the last time you went cold at the cry of “play with me mummy” because it really tires you out?

If sustained weight loss has always eluded you or if you feel you have tried every diet under the sun, then why not stop trying and do something that not only helps you lose weight but helps you become the mum you want to be?

LighterLife can help you alter the way you think about food and yourself. Group sessions help you meet with others in the same situation, making friends in a warm and encouraging environment. Moreover, our Counsellors help you deal with the underlying reasons, not just weight loss.

Take a leaf out of LighterLife success story Nicki Kelly’s New Year book. She says, “I joined in January 2013 and lost seven stone in eight months.” Nicki originally felt she didn’t have time to make a change to her life and so the busier she got, the more weight she gained. But health concerns made her turn to LighterLife and she hasn’t looked back since.

“Since losing the weight, I look at what I eat and why I am eating it,” says Nicki, “The

Weight loss and a new way of life

Counselling has been amazing in helping me realise that I am not the only person linking food to my emotions. LighterLife has truly helped me change

my life. It isn’t just a weight management plan; it’s a new way of life.”

Don’t let your weight hold you back this year.

afterYou probably already know that the Willows & Wetlands Visitor Centre is the best place in Somerset to find traditional and modern English willow baskets, the ideal gift for friends and relatives who appreciate English craftmanship. But do you know much else about this long established family run business based in the little village of Stoke St Gregory in the middle of the world famous wetland, the Somerset Levels?

Did you know that we have an Outdoor classroom that nestles in the hillside overlooking the “withy beds”, River Tone and to Currymoor and Haymoor beyond? This lovely classroom is available to use free of charge as

Or, that we can organise willow weaving opportunities for visiting educational groups to suit all budgets? There is a huge variety of opportunities for studying subjects across the

school curriculum here at the Willows & Wetlands.

The Guided tour of the Willow yard and basket making workshop, catering for all types of groups as well as individual visitors is a revelation. We continue to add artefacts to our private collection that forms the unique Willow and Basket Museum. Did you know that we have a film telling the whole willow story in a beautifully crafted DVD that is now available to purchase from our shop or website. There are also Willow Walks to enjoy and the superb Lemon Tree Coffee House offering a tempting range of home made cakes, lunches and other refreshments.

There is much more than willow woven into the Willows & Wetlands Visitor Centre.

Safer, Easier Child Collection Soon to be the Norm – Here are Seven Reasons Why

Most parents have, at some point, had to face the hassle of changing arrangements for picking up children with their school. In no other walk of life would something so random and unstructured be the industry standard – and this relates to the care of young children.

Born out of the experience of its creator – and parent - Richard Moss, 3fifteen allows parents to inform schools when any changes occur to the collection arrangements of their child. Each user is able to set their own PIN code which, when matched with their unique email or mobile phone number, allows them to securely contact schools to advise of any collection-plan changes. Parents are

After-School Management Service Heaven-Sent for Busy Parents

able to supply a description of the new collector, along with an optional photograph, thus reassuring schools that the child is being handed over to a trusted individual.

3fifteen is available in 20 languages and growing, including Urdu, Polish and French, allowing parents of all nationalities to contact their school clearly, in order to coordinate securely the safe collection of their children.

With child abductions having increased by 88% since 2004, 3fifteen is also an incredibly relevant tool; for schools, the benefits include enhanced Ofsted Inspection reports and the ability to use Pupil Premiums (a form of government funding) to finance 3fifteen’s service. For parents, the advantages are just as worthwhile.1 3fifteen is completely safe

and secure. The PIN code technology ensures all shared information is encrypted and only accessible by the school and parent. 2 At present schools have no means of confirming people’s identity; with 3fifteen information and pictures of the person collecting a child can be shared which allows children to be handed over to trusted individuals.3 Parents can, at times, have difiiculty contacting schools and messages can go astray. 3fifteen lets parents communicate with schools via text, phone, email or the 3fifteen app, with all arrangements stored on a central dashboard for the school to monitor easily. 4 Teachers can also directly

access changes to after-school collection plans for children in their class and in so doing, minimize the risk of miscommunication between parent, receptionist and themselves.5 3fifteen is available in 20 languages and growing so parents who prefer to communicate in their own language now can do so. 6 Parents who are hearing impaired have also found the 3fifteen service a preferable tool for communicating with their child’s school as it negates the need to use the phone7 3fifteen needn’t cost your school anything directly as they can legitimately finance 3fifteen’s entire cost using the Pupil Premium Fund

CHILDREN from Somerset are invited to enter a potato modelling and diary competition at a garden centre in the county as part of its free event dedicated to the vegetable (February, 2014).

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre near Taunton is asking youngsters to create a potato model and submit a diary of their adventures with their new potato friend before March 1 for its Spudtacular Models competition.

Norma Moore, General Manager of the independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield, explained: “We know that children love potato modelling, so as a part of our potato festival, which takes place from February 17 until 23, we thought it would be fun to hold the competition.

“Instead of asking children to submit their model we are asking them to make a diary of the trips they take their veggie mate on and bring this in to the garden centre to enter.

“The competition is open to children aged 13 and under and is free to enter. The winning diaries will receive a gardening kit including seed potatoes.

“Children will be able to take part in a free potato printing activity between 11am and 3pm every day during our Potato Festival. There will also

Dear diary… today I made a spudtacular model

be a ‘Where’s King Edward Treasure Hunt’ around the garden centre with winners scooping a bag of Tyrells crisps.”

Youngsters wishing to enter the free competition need to submit their diary to Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre before 5pm on March 1.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is celebrating a second orang utan birth in 9 months.

Bornean orang utan Chinta gave birth on Sunday 22nd December.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park Director of Operations and Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said: “You wait 16 years and then two babies come along in nine months!” One of the Zoo’s other females, Mali, gave birth to a female baby named Tatau in April.

“Mother and baby have had time together in their off show den away from people and the wind and the rain, but they have had access to the show den in the Ape Centre from mid January. Inevitably, the baby was difficult to spot at first but is becoming increasingly active.”

Staff think the youngster is another female. The Bornean orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus) is threatened by hunting, the pet trade and the destruction of its rainforest habitat. Forest is being destroyed to create palm oil plantations. Given the declining populations, measures such as switching to alternative oil products and maintaining sustainable populations of orangs in zoos are becoming ever more important.

Children race electric karts around an inflatable mini Grand Prix circuit. The karts are fitted with a host of safety features and, even if the children lose control, they are brought to a safe gentle stop by the inflatable track.

Youngsters love it….especially when they receive their medals and trophies and do their laps of honour with the chequered flags flying! And we continually receive fantastic feedback from parents who tell us, week in and week out, that it was the best

The Summer holidays may seem far off but they’ll be here as quick as saying ‘pantomime’.

Mill on the Brue is the best holiday idea yet for children (8 – 15 years). They can come on their own during the summer holidays, staying for a week or daily. We don’t have large numbers (only 60 residential every week); Sunday morning welcome, placed in age groups, maximum of 12 in each group, introduced to their two instructors who stay with them all week, and off they go!

At least 6 activities a day, as most are in our own beautiful 25 acres of fields, woods, and river valley, interspersed with delicious, filling meals, home cooked with many of our own organic vegetables and fruit. The kids sleep in bunk bedded rooms, again with their own age, supervised by night staff who ensure they wash and clean their teeth!

The exciting, fun, activities, games and tasks are ‘awesome’ –from canoeing to high ropes, archery to slacklining, assault course, rafting, climbing,

tunnelling, crossing the river, zip wire, camping, clay oven cooking, water slide, animal feeding, concert, disco…. the list is endless and the days packed. TV? Computer games? No way!

Over 50% of children return year after year as it becomes their own summer tradition. They also make great friends, become more independent, confident, – returning home grubby, tired and very happy.

14th February 1779 Death of Captain James Cook

Captain Cook (1728-1779). Engraved by E.Scriven and published in The Gallery Of Portraits With Memoirs encyclopedia, United Kingdom, 1837.

JAMES COOK was an explorer and navigator. He was born in a Yorkshire village in October 1728 and was the son of a farm worker. At the age of 17 he moved to the coast and started work as an apprentice, shipping coal in the merchant navy. After several years with the merchant navy, he switched to the Royal Navy and served in North America and excelled at surveying and charting waters (cartography).

In 1768 Cook set off from Plymouth on a mission by the government to observe the rare event of the planet Venus which was to pass in front of the sun the following year. He was also given the secret mission of searching for a new southern continent. At the time, sailors had hunted in vain for this mysterious land which many believed stretched across the whole of the far south of the world. Cook was appointed commander of HMS ENDEAVOUR, a vessel built in Whitby and selected by Cook as it was very sturdy and practical. Accompanying him on the voyage was an astronomer and botanist.

Having battled the seas for several months, Cook arrived in TAHITI in April 1769 and was welcomed by the islanders and the following month, the astronomer was able to watch Venus pass across the sun. Endeavour then sailed to NEW ZEALAND where Cook mapped the coastline and observed that it was made up of two islands (North Island and South Island) and not joined to a large southern continent. Endeavour continued towards TASMANIA and the east coast of AUSTRALIA, never seen before by Europeans. Cook dropped anchor in Botany Bay and the botanist was able to observe hundreds of different species of plants and animals. GEORGE STUBBS (famous 18th century artist) was later able to paint a picture of a kangaroo based on a stuffed animal skin that Cook brought back with him. When continuing their route up the eastern coast of Australia, Endeavour was nearly wrecked on a coral reef and it is only thanks to Cook’s huge skill as a sailor that he was able to save the ship from disaster.

After three years at sea, Captain James Cook and HMS Endeavour arrived back in England.Cook made two other voyages in his lifetime, sailing a huge distance. HE WAS KILLED IN HAWAII when relations with the islanders soured on his third voyage (a journey to find the North-West Passage, believed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans). On these epic journeys, Cook discovered and mapped more of the earth’s surface than any other explorer before.

Help friends to meet in the

middle of the Valentine Maze

Visit www.parenttalk.org.uk to see if you are right!

Guaranteed to seduce even the most reluctant Valentine, these divine heart-shaped jammie dodgers are deliciously crisp on the outside yet gorgeously gooey in the middle. You may need some adult assistance with the kneading and rolling of the dough and of course, with the hot oven. You’ll need two heart-shaped cookie cutters – one large, one small.Prep time – 15 mins Cook time – 15 minsINGREDIENTS to make 10-12 cookies, depending on the size of your cutters120g plain flourPinch of salt½ tsp baking powder½ tsp ground ginger (optional)A little grated nutmeg30g cold butter, diced30g soft brown sugar1 egg, lightly beaten2 tsp golden syrupStrawberry or raspberry jamA little milkExtra plain flour for rolling

METHOD♥ Preheat the oven to 160°C/gas mark 3 and lightly grease a large baking tray.♥ Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl and add a pinch of salt, the ground ginger and nutmeg. Using your fingers, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. This is the hand method, but you can use a food processor if you like - just ask an adult to stand by!♥ Stir in the soft brown sugar.

♥ Add the lightly beaten egg and the golden syrup and then beat with a fork until the mixture comes together into a sticky dough. It should be sticky, but if it is really too sticky to handle, add a little more flour. If you have time, wrap in cling film and leave in the fridge for 30 mins.♥ Now spread some flour onto the work surface and lay out your dough, pressing it down to form a flattish disc. Using your hands, knead the dough for a minute. With a floured rolling pin, roll it out quite thinly (about 2-3 mm thick). ♥ Take the large cutter and cut out as many hearts as you can. Bring the remaining dough together again and repeat the process again, until you have no dough left. ♥ Lay half the hearts onto the baking tray. Pour a little milk into a small bowl, and, using a pastry brush, paint the surface of each heart with a little milk.♥ Then use the smaller heart cutter to cut out a small heart shape inside the remaining hearts. Lay out the smaller hearts on the baking tray; they make a delicious bite-size snack. Lay the large hearts with the heart-shaped hole carefully over the hearts which you have coated with milk and press down gently. ♥ With a steady hand, spoon a generous amount of jam into the heart-shaped hole and spread it out to fill the hole completely. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. Check them after 12 minutes; you want the biscuits to be a pale, golden biscuit colour not dark brown!

♥ Transfer to a cooling rack with a spatula. Be careful, as the jam inside is really hot. ♥ Leave to cool completely.

Would your child like to study music in the magnificent surroundings of Hestercombe House and Gardens near Taunton?

In a ground breaking initiative launched this academic year, the Guildhall School has forged a relationship with the Somerset Sound Foundation Music Education HUB and the Hestercombe Trust offering progression routes in instrumental study and in singing.

Opening in March 2014, the Hestercombe Centre (HCYM) now welcomes applications from committed young musicians aged 7-18 to attend on Saturdays between 9.30am and 2.00pm in a sustained programme of weekly training comprising instrumental lessons, ensemble work, singing, performance skills and musicianship classes. A high quality team of teachers has been appointed to deliver the curriculum in most orchestral instruments, singing and guitar. Piano lessons will be added as the Centre develops. Visiting artists will also enrich the provision in a series of workshops.

Fees of £270 per term should not put anyone off making an application. The

Hestercombe Centre for Young Musicians A Division of The Guildhall School of

Music and Drama

Sound Foundation Music HUB has generously ensured that no child should be denied access to the Centre on financial grounds. Bursaries will be available for families who satisfy strict criteria.

As a result of demand from current and prospective parents, All Hallows Preparatory School has opened a new Nursery Class this month – bringing forward the age that children can join this outstanding school to age 3. The new class is based in the dedicated, Early Years centre in the heart of the school and the youngest recruits are able to enjoy a host of amazing opportunities and facilities that really set this Nursery apart from the competition.

Headmaster, Ian Murphy, is a firm believer that the early years in Independent Education really do reap benefits:

“The early years of a child’s life are the most formative in so many ways. Independent education from age 3 brings a wide range of tangible benefits including significantly lower pupil/teacher ratios, single year classes (so many state primaries are now forced to mix key stages of education), access to specialist teachers right from the start for subjects such as languages, PE

& Games, Art & Drama. At All Hallows, our younger children also benefit immensely from a wide range of facilities on site – children in the nursery will enjoy daily Forest School sessions in the 7 acre woodland area, ‘Tots Tennis’ within the LTA accredited Tennis Academy, Swimming, Golf, Dance and languages as well as having access to the Astroturf, Cricket and Rugby pitches, fully equipped Science Laboratories, theatre, Art and Ceramics facilities, ICT

facilities and Libraries.”For parents, the nursery

class really will be a ‘one-stop shop’ with a vast array of opportunities for the children and superb ‘wrap around’ care. Daily sessions will run from from 08.30 to 16.25 at a cost of £45.00 per day which includes lunch, snacks and all activities. Early drop off and a late pick up will also be available. Early years entitlement grants and Employer childcare vouchers are accepted.

At Millfield Pre-Prep we aim to find and encour-age the best in each child. Combining our small class sizes, knowledge of each child, experience in teaching and extensive facilities, we offer a programme that inspires each child in active and creative learning.

Our curriculum offers a careful blend of literacy and numeracy with a wide range of other subjects including science, humanities, French, cookery, drama, dance and music. A typical week includes art, games, PE, swimming, cookery, ICT and Forest School and from Year 2 pupils can join individual music lessons to learn to play an instrument.

Outside learning is further enhanced through regular visits to local places of interest and walks of discovery through our own fields, apple orchards, wildlife areas and visits to see our ponies in the stables. The children also grow vegetables in our ‘alittlements’ and look at life in the pond.

In addition we offer before and after school care and

there are over 20 weekly free clubs on offer for children to enjoy after school including chess (with our resident Grand Master), cookery, cricket, hockey, pottery, trampolining and gymnastics. Paid for clubs such as riding, tennis, football and dance are also available, run by our expert Millfield coaches.

The overall passion and desire to see children make the most of their potential motivates Millfield in everything we do. Our aim is to see children find skills and interests they really love, giving them a confident platform for their whole learning experience.

Hazlegrove Pre-Prep children are happy children! They are reaping the benefits of a carefully restructured curriculum – born out of a desire to create a school that we would all like to go to if we were their age again.

Fundamental to the very purpose of a “Pre-Prep” is to provide an educational environment allowing children to move into the Prep School, in Year 3, ready and prepared to take on new challenges and able to make the most of the opportunities opening up to them. Being Head of an “Independent School “, Richard Fenwick has made the most of the freedom this allows to create a Pre-Prep and Nursery at Hazlegrove that he truly believes in.

Mornings are all about the basics, English and Maths, the building blocks of academic endeavour. Pupils are taught by experienced class teachers whose priority is to ensure that each child learns in a way which attends to their individual priorities and needs. Afternoons are about enjoying an exciting range of activities which not only

keeps the children busy and happy, it makes them more self-assured and confident, continually building on levels of skill and ability across the whole curriculum. Specialist teaching and use of the outstanding Prep School facilities means that these children are able to make the most of this part of the day with Tennis, Games, Swimming, Drama, Music, Science, Art, ICT and of course the hugely popular Forest School (taking place in the

school’s own woods). “We have a curriculum

which not only challenges, inspires and stretches, but which also embodies the rigour which can often be found lacking in this modern age when we seem so consumed by political correctness. We aim to give these young people the very best start we can. It’s certainly the school I would want to go to if I was their age again.” Says Headmaster, Richard Fenwick.

King’s Hall School is set in a simply stunning location in the foothills of the Quantocks. The 50 acre estate is entirely surrounded by National Trust farmland, yet it’s within a mile of Taunton and provides an idyllic setting for children to learn and discover. King’s Hall is a Prep School for children aged from 2-13, they provide a fantastic outdoor education programme, “Forest School”, which complements and extends the children’s classroom work.

The newest addition to King’s Hall is a state of the art nursery for two to four year olds. The nursery will be within King’s Hall’s heritage buildings and the children will benefit from the School’s fabulous facilities including Sports Hall and Arts Centre. They will be able to step out of the purpose built nursery in to ‘Little Wood’, which is home to the resident chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits. Not forgetting the camp fire for toasted marshmallow or the

pizza patch vegetable garden and much, much more.

King’s Hall School truly is a wonderful place, where children are encouraged to be the best that they can be and without doubt enjoy the journey getting there! If you are interested in finding out more about what it is like to be

part of something special, or to book a place at an open day please contact Emma Guppy, the admissions registrar on 01823 285921 to reserve your place. The next open day will be held on Friday 7th March for the Pre-Prep (ages 2-7 years).

Every time you read about a school you get the same catchphrases, the same promises and the same clichés. Everyone surely wants their child to do well academically and everyone too wants their child to be happy at school. But with so many schools to choose from how do you know which one is best for your child?

Choosing an independent school means there are some things that are a given. You rightly expect high academic standards, superb facilities and access to a wider curriculum. But undoubtedly when you visit a school you are looking for something else too – and undeniably this will be found in the people you meet.

At Wellington school we are able to offer a fantastic education – we have the superb facilities and our results speak for themselves. We offer everything you would expect from a great prep school. But what we also offer is a school that has not lost sight of the real meaning of each child’s education; developing enquiring minds, nurturing individual characters and building skills for life – the Wellington Way.

We have a school fizzing

We don’t want to bore you

with inspiring staff – teachers who put the children first and encourage them every step of the way. We also invest in the best – and right from the beginning. Our Early Years team is an example of this. Our three year olds are taught by Jane Hester (B Ed Hons Cantab), who brings years of experience and knowledge

to the classroom. We have Matt Hoile (BA Hons, first class) teaching in Reception alongside Nickie Reed (BN PGCE) our Head of Early Years and Infants.

Wellington is growing and

pupils come from far and wide. It’s a special place – why don’t you come and see for yourself?

The Secret Garden Nursery and pre-school is a small, family-run nursery where we take pride in the individual attention and care we give to children and families. We are located in a lovely, converted barn, set back from the road, just outside Congresbury, North Somerset. The nursery works closely with local schools and serves all surrounding villages. In 2013, inspired by the early years education in Reggio, Italy, we began to transform into a nursery very different to others. “We are convinced that from babyhood, children are amazing, competent learners, with huge potential. Our role is to give them experiences which nurture and support them to discover this. These ideas are reflected in everything we do at nursery,” says Stefanie Metcalfe,

nursery owner. “Whether our children are outside in the mud kitchen or the sandpit, or inside exploring rice play or making bread, we can see their skills and personalities blossoming”.

Our experienced staff are

friendly and nurturing, working closely with children and families to build a nursery community, where all are respected. All staff are appropriately trained and many to degree level, ensuring no shortage of exciting ideas!

In addition, we run a Forest School for pre-schoolers, working outdoors on projects such as a bug house, building self-esteem and confidence. We also currently have a music and drama class once a week for 2- 4 year olds.

If you would like to visit

to find out more about the exciting things going on, do contact Emma or Stefanie on 01934 853350.

How to be a heroineBy Samantha EllisPublished by Chatto & Windus

How much are we defined and influenced by the books we have loved and read? Samantha Ellis’ brilliant study of literary heroines asks us to re-examine our reading and to look closely at the female characters that have enthralled, inspired and angered us over time. From Jane Eyre to Catherine Earnshaw, How to be a heroine examines the modern woman from a literary perspective, charting how what we read can say so much about how we are. Brilliant!

The academic year has continued on a positive note for Chard School since it received its impressive Inspection Report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

The Head, Mrs Jane Bruce, said “What was most pleasing was the acknowledgement of what I have always known we do well: the excellent quality of the pupils’ achievements and learning; the excellent quality of our extra-curricular provision; and pupils of all abilities are highly successful in their learning and personal development. It is a fabulous endorsement in the trust our parents have put in us”.

The report identified that ‘Small class sizes enable teachers to give pupils individual feedback and support as the lesson is progressing and helps the pupils to move their learning forward’. The

Impressive Inspection Report for Chard School

school, for 2-11 year olds, is independent, non-selective and located in beautiful period buildings in a peaceful corner of Chard, in South Somerset. As the report also acknowledged, the school has a wealth of specialist facilities and teaching ‘The delivery of the curriculum is enhanced by resources such as the well-equipped science room, extensive physical education and games facilities and the newly refurbished ICT suite’.

In addition to this, the Key Stage 2 SATs results achieved by our pupils are excellent with the children achieving well above the national trend.

Fees are highly competitive and there is a Before-School Club from 8am, After-School Club until 5.30pm, an educational Nursery for 2-4 year olds, plus a range of extra-curricular activities which take place every day.

LongbournBy Jo BakerPublished by Black Swan

This lively and witty novel imagines life in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice but from a below-stairs perspective. Re-imaging this famous story, we see through the servants and housemaids eyes what life in a Regency England country house was like for the people who worked beneath its eaves. Full of familiar characters but with the added twist of a historical and social conscience; romance and hardship combine to create an utterly captivating and original modern novel.

Wild StrawberriesBy Angela ThirkellPublished by Virago

First published in 1934, this gem of a book captures perfectly and charmingly the times in which it was written. It has all the classic ingredients of its age, the country house, the loveable central heroine and the feckless, handsome playboy. Beautifully written, full of period detail and with sumptuous descriptions of house parties, cocktails and dresses, this novel wins your heart with its unashamedly entertaining and guileless verve. Perfect for banishing wintery blues. Enjoy!

New research into the state of mind of working parents in the UK has found that we are a nation divided with women battling to find a healthy work-life balance, taking on the majority of childcare responsibilities while not at work. The research, undertaken for The Work & Family Show which is due to take place for the first time on 21st and 22nd February, found that over three quarters of women (80%) feel guilty about going back to work after having a family. Men, on the other hand, are relatively confident about returning to their jobs with just 39% feeling guilty about leaving their children in childcare.

The biggest concern for more than 35% of women was not having the help or understanding from their employer when dealing with the difficult transition from working woman to working mum. They also worried that their employers would be discriminatory towards them, entrusting them with responsibility and fewer big projects.

One mum who struggled to return to work after having a baby is 31 year old Leah McGrath. She returned to her role as an HR Service Manager at a large agra-pharmaceutical company after a year at home with her daughter. The plan was for Leah to do a job share but this fell through and she found herself fitting in a full time job into her contracted three days a week. She says: “I was finding it such a struggle, commuting three hours, three days a week, and trying my best to be a good mum. I was getting ill all the time; whenever there was a virus going around, I would catch it as I was so run down and my little girl’s behaviour was becoming very challenging. After a while I realised there must be more to life and resigned. It was extremely scary but I am so pleased I did.” Leah has since re-trained as a yoga teacher, running her own Yogabellies franchise, teaching pre-natal, post-natal and baby massage classes in her local wellbeing and community centres. She has managed to get a healthy work-life balance and work flexibly but only by leaving her past career behind her.

Ben Black, Director of MyFamilyCare.co.uk who, together with Clarion Events, are organising The Work & Family Show says: “Due to the lack of support from their employers on returning to

The Giant Wiggle charity fundraiser launched to encourage children to help other children and get active at the same time

Leading charity Action for Children is teaming up with The World of Eric Carle™ and the most read children’s book in the UK, The Very Hungry Caterpillar to get under-5s together to help other children in an event called The Giant Wiggle.

Action for Children provides early years child development, learning and childcare services to thousands of tots throughout the UK, through its children and family centres.

The charity is encouraging children’s centres, nurseries

and groups for under-5s throughout the UK to host sponsored Giant Wiggle

events on The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, 20th March 2014. The day, celebrated annually, marks the start of the 45th anniversary celebration of Eric Carle’s beloved book and 2014 marks Action for Children’s 145th year.

The sponsored walks will bring children together to wiggle along in giant caterpillar conga lines and encourage them to play and develop their imaginations through storytelling and creativity.

All money raised through the event will support Action

for Children’s work across the country to help vulnerable children, young people and families in the heart of communities.

Helen, a London mum of one-year-old Bodhi, said: “The Giant Wiggle is a fun, fantastic way to get children active and involved in charity work from an early age. And Action for Children does such important work with some of the UK’s most vulnerable children, your kids will be supporting a great cause. My little one will be taking part, so join us and the caterpillar and get involved!”

Action for Children teams up with The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ for a fundraising event for tots

Guilt-ridden, torn between two roles and overlookedThe current state-of-mind of working mums today

work, women often feel forced to give up the careers they have trained and worked so hard for in order to fit in their new role of motherhood. However, it shouldn’t be like this. Staff need to be supported as they return to work and deal with the challenges that being a working parent can bring. Employers who respond to their needs will be rewarded with engaged, productive and loyal employees.”

The research also asked fathers how they felt about the transition from working man to working dad. More than a third (37%) said they returned to work and received no flexibility at all. One in five, meanwhile, said they wished they had never gone back to work at all, wishing they could take on the full-time role of child carer.

Ben Black continues: “So many big companies like Barclays, Discovery Channel and Rolls Royce have made big improvements to their policies to help their parents who work, but these results show there’s a huge deficit. Women shouldn’t feel restricted in work when they become a mother and a man’s role in bringing up a child has evolved so much in the past 30 years and it’s time that businesses recognise this too.”

The Work & Family Show has been born out of the high demand from families in need of help when returning to work or starting up their own business. Jenny Willott, Minister for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs, will introduce the show while inspirational experts and employers on the lookout for motivated staff will be on hand to give working parents and career break women access to practical advice. Organised by Clarion Events and My Family Care, it takes place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February 2014 at the ExCeL London. Tickets are available from www.theworkandfamilyshow.co.uk from just £12, and people coming to the neighbouring Baby Show will have free entrance.
