Course Description Psychological aspects of sports, including the value of sports, psychological factors involved in competitive as well as non-competitive athletic activities and the role of sports psychologists. Course Goals The goals of this course are to have students become critical learners who master the major theories used in sport and exercise psychology. Additionally students shall be able to apply these theoretical concepts to real world situations. A final goal of this course is that students increase their information literacy by conducting research. Department of Kinesiology Student Program Learning Outcomes 1. Students will be able to explain, identify, and/or demonstrate the theoretical and/or scientific principles that can be used to address issues or problems in the sub-disciplines in kinesiology. 2. Students will be able to effectively communicate in writing (clear, concise and coherent) on topics in kinesiology.

Psychologicalaspectsofsports,includingthevalueofsports,psychologicalfactorsinvolvedincompetitiveaswellasnon-competitiveathleticactivitiesandtheroleofsportspsychologists.

WrittenExaminations(LO#1,2,5)(PLO#1,2,5)Threewrittenexaminationswillbegivenduringthesemester.Eachexaminationwillaccountfor40pointstowardthetotalgrade.Exam1willassessknowledgeofinformationpresentedinthefirstthirdofthequarter.Exam2willassessknowledgeoftheinformationpresentedinthesecondthirdofthequarter.AndExam3willassessknowledgepresentedinthefinalthirdofthequarter.Examinationswillincludeidentifications,multiplechoicequestions,andshortandlongessayquestions.

PraxisPaper(LO#1,2,3,4,5)(PLO#1,2,5)Thepraxispaperwillinclude3assignmentsandwillaccountfor40pointstowardthetotalgrade.Praxisistheprocessofputtingtheoreticalknowledgeintopractice,andiscriticalinthefieldofsportpsychologywheremuchoftheresearchdoneisintendedforapplicationinrealworldsettings.Inthisassignmentstudentswillberequiredtoidentifyaspecificproblemthattheyhaveencounteredorareinterestedinwithinasportorexercisesetting.Examplesofpossibletopicscouldinclude:anxietyresultingindecreasedathleticperformance,aggressionwithinsport,orlowmotivationamongchildrentoparticipateinsport.Withinthe

contextoftheassignmentstudentsshouldaddressissuesofdiversityandsocialjusticeastheyrelatetothetopictheyhavechosen,theresearchavailable,and/ortheimplementationoftheintervention.Assignment1:5pts.Studentswillberequiredtosubmitaclearlyformulatedtopic.Thisshouldincludeaveryspecificproblemorscenario,thetypesofsolutionsthatmightbeinvestigated,andkeytermsthatwillbeusedtosearchforresearchrelatedtothetopic.Assignment2:10pts.Acomplete,well-thoughtout,andwell-developedoutlinewillbesubmittedalongwithatleastfiveresearchreferencespresentedinAPAstyle.Assignment3:25pts.Thefinalpaperwillincludeapresentationoftheproblem(1-2pgs.),areviewoffiveoriginalresearchstudiesandotherrelevantliterature(4-6pgs.),andclearapplicableandpracticalrecommendationsforaninterventiontoaddresstheproblemthatisreflectiveofpreviousresearch(3-4pgs.or2pagedescriptionPLUSdeliverable).Thisassignmentwillassesstudents’abilitytoa)composequestionsrelevantintheareaofsportpsychology,b)findarticlesthathelptoaddressthesequestions,c)reviewthearticlesandd)applytheresearchfoundtoapracticalapplication.Articlesmustbefoundinpeer-reviewedjournals.GoogleScholarisNOTanappropriatesearchengine.YoumustuseappropriatesearchenginessuchasPsychINFO,AcademicSearchPremier,orothersearchenginesavailablethroughtheKingLibrarydatabasesearchresources.Articlesmaybefoundinthefollowingjournals:TheJournalofSportandExercisePsychology,TheInternationalJournalofSportPsychology,JournalofAppliedSportPsychology,TheSportPsychologist,andResearchQuarterlyofSportandExerciseScience.AllreviewsmustbeinAPAstyle.Thisassignmentwillbediscussedfurtherinclass.Thisassignmentwillbeturnedinthroughturnitin.cominadditiontoturninginahardcopyinclass.Moredetailswillbeprovidedinclass.

GoalSettingProject(LO#1,2,3)(PLO#1,2)Thegoalsettingprojectwillcontribute20pointstowardthetotalgrade.Thisprojectwillinvolvestudentsapplyinggoalsettingtheorytoanappliedsituationandevaluatingtheeffectivenessofgoalsettingintwosituations.Detailsofthisassignmentwillbeprovidedinclassandonmywebsite.

Participation(LO#1,2,5)(PLO#1,2,3)Participationwillcontribute10pointstowardthetotalgrade.Studentsareexpectedtoregularlycontributeinameaningfulandconstructivewaytoclassdiscussions.Simplyattendingclassisnotsufficient.Youmustparticipate!Ifyouarenotcomfortablespeakinginclasspleaseseemesothatwecanmakealternatearrangementsforyoutoearnthesepoints,suchasmeetingwithmeregularlyduringofficehourstodiscussthereadingsandcoursematerials.

Quizzes(LO#1)(PLO#1,2)Popquizzeswillaccountfor10pointsofthetotalgrade.Therewillbe10popquizzesgivenduringclass.Quizzeswillassessreadingcomprehensionofthecurrentdaysorweeksreading.Studentsmustbeinattendancewhenthequizisannouncedtotakethequiz.Ifstudentsarenotpresentwhenthequizisdistributedtheywillnotbeabletotakethequiz.Studentsareencouragedtousetheirownnotesduringthesequizzes.Therewillnotbeanyopportunitiestomakeupthequizzes.

WritingQuality

TheDepartmentofPsychologyhasadoptedspecificstandardsregardingthequalityofwrittenworksubmittedinpsychologycourses.Unlessotherwisestatedbyyourprofessor,allpapersmustbewrittenusingcurrentAPAformat.Additionally,allpapers,includingthosesubmittedtomeetclassrequirementsorsubmittedforextracredit,mustmeetminimumwritingstandards.Anypaperwithmorethanfivespelling,punctuation,orgrammaticalerrorswillbereturnedforrevision.Alatepenaltyequivalenttoatleast10%oftheassignmentgradewillbeassesseduponresubmission.Additionalpenaltiesmaybeassessedatthediscretionofyourprofessor.Ifyouneedhelpwithwritingskills,itistoyouradvantagetomakeuseofresourcesoncampuspriortotheduedate.Remember,youwillberequiredtorewriteanypapernotmeetingtheabovestandards,andwillloseaminimumof10%shouldarevisionberequired.Thispolicyappliestoallpsychologyclasses.
