Since the inception of PSME UAEChapter in 2009, it is obvious that

the most challenging part of ourorganization is how to sustain themembership growth and reten-tion. The devastating effect ofthe global financial turmoil thatbadly hit the region has displacedmany of our existing members. Many of them have gone to differ-ent places seeking for greenerpasture.

We all know that members drivethe action in every organization.Without members active role inthe Society, the Chapter is inevi-tably paralyze and unsustainable. This years theme, LeveragingMembers Initiatives Key to aSustainable Chapter is gearedtowards improving the member-ship growth and retention.

We will develop strategic plans tocontinually enhance our profes-sional and technical skills. One of

The PSME-UAE Journey last 2012 towards a successful 2013 By Engr. Dennis P. De Mesa, PME ( Immediate Past President )

2012 had not been that easy butwith the undying & unselfish sup-port of all the officers & membersall that we expect & plannedwere successfully accomplished.Every organization has a goal forsuccess & excellence but thisdoes not mean that it is ex-empted from struggles & difficul-ties. We all have our own pri-orities such as family & work butnonetheless, these did not hinderus from doing our part in thisorganization. Finding sponsors in

every event & activities was oneof the difficulties in our organiza-tion, as it seems the effect of thefinancial crisis of previous years isstill on in some companies andorganizations in this region. Orga-nizing events was one of them, as

well as gathering members, venue& other resources. Its known to all of us the hardshipwe encountered on our way ofexecuting the planned activitiesbut we simply didnt stop lookingforward to reach out the goal, this only proved that PSME wasembodied with distinct core val-ues.As we commit ourselves to ac-complish our organizational mis-sion, we shared each other the

pride and joy of reaching out thehands of our needy fellow coun-trymen through outreach pro-grams in POLO-OWWA. Thecamaraderie and teamwork encir-cled us every Sportsfest was ex-emplary. Not too many to men-

tion, we shared ideas for thebetterment of our professionduring seminars and symposium. As we pave our way, we arecalling out the support of each& every member to make 2013more successful and glorious forour beloved PSME.Godspeed PSME and MabuhayPSME UAE!

The theme Membership Growth DrivesChapters Success & Sustainabilityreminds of the first question in mind thatWhy I will join the Philippine Society Mechani-cal Engineer, what will it give me? True to thefact that every individual is asking what theirbenefits will be every time they join an affilia-tion or a professional group like PSME-UAE..Allow me to dispense my response: Bene-fits. Being a member of PSME-UAE allowsyou to be engaged in uplifting the societythrough professional interaction and contri-bution for the sake of many. Another bene-fit of being a member is continuing educa-tion. Continuing education is very essentialespecially with the fast-pace world as itmakes you updated in the latest engineeringand technology, regulations, ordinance, and

international engineering standards. Cama-raderie and network/connection are alsoanother plus you will gain in being part of thegroup. Most importantly, becoming a futureleader is one of the benefits, or say, oppor-tunity, you will be entitled to in becomingpart of PSME-UAE as each member are givena chance to speak and be heard. I always tellmy fellow members that we should not focuson what we can gain in joining PSME-UAEbut what we can contribute when we be-come a member. We should always aim tobe of service to others. That is why I en-courage all our existing and new members tocontinuously and untiringly spare some ofour busy time to commit to our organizationfor its betterment. Let us not waste thehardwork and onerous tasks with tireless

    efforts of ourc h a p t e rfounding fa-thers, headedby our Char-tered Presi-dent Engr.Tomas TomDela Cruz.

    This maybe

the last letterthat I will beimparting you that is written here in theMiddle East here in Dubai as I am due toventure new opportunities in Canada verysoon. Nonetheless, my heart will alwaysbe with PSME-UAE chapter. Mabuhay angPSME-UAE!!!

Happiness & Belongingness with PSME-UAEHappiness & Belongingness with PSME-UAEWe have finally seen the curtain of 2012 closed, and are almost over with the first quarter of this

very exciting year of 2013, nevertheless, let megive you a recap of our accomplished activitiesduring the last 2 prolific quarters of 2012.

On September 28, our 2nd Technical sympo-sium for the calendar year was held in POLO-OWWA with topic on Building Energy Simulationusing Equest presented by Engr. Reniel Barroso.

The Third Middle East Regional Conference(TMERC) held in Intercontinental Hotel, AbuDhabi, on October 27-28, I would say, is one ofthe most memorable events of 2012. During thisevent we have witnessed how far PSME-UAEChapter has achieved. Full story on last page

Outreach program , is also one of the missions of PSME-UAE chapter, to extend help to thosewho are less-able, maltreated, abused, neglected and distressed Kabayans. On November 16,PSME-UAE members have reached out to these people to show love and compassion in our ownlittle ways. It may not be too much but the thought that they were remembered was also thefact that they were grateful and appreciative.

The Bayanihan Festival , recently held in Zabeel Park, on 30 th November, was an event organ-ized by FilCom. To express our advocacy for the Filipino Community , we have requested the gen-eral members to participate. The PSME-UAE Chapter delegates appearance received warm wel-come from the honorable Ambassador to the UAE, Her Excellency Grace Relucio-Princesaand from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office & Filcom officials. Admittedly, I, myself, missedthe morning gathering of the group during this event, since I arrived a bit late due to many roadaccidents and pockets of floods all over the town caused by the briefed downpour.

Ultimately, what I am trying to explicate here is how we should take part in the group we areaffiliated to, how we should get involved in the community, especially, our very own Filipino Com-munity . Back in my elementary days, I made a declamation that still resonates in my mind andwill forever, be embedded in my head as it epitomizes the true meaning of living and search forhappiness and belongingness ( See last page Desiderata ). Explosion-Proof Fans - Urban Legend???Vol. XIII No. 2 AMCA TECHSPECS, July 1998 Release

At some point during an engineer's ca-reer, he may be confronted with an appli-cation which involves an airstream con-taining one or more potentially explosivecomponents. Now, since we know thatthere are electrical enclosures which arerated as explosion-proof, and there aremotors which are rated as explosion-proof, it is natural to think that it logicallyfollows that there are also fans which arerated as explosion-proof. But THEREIS NO SUCH THING AS AN EX-PLOSION-PROOF FAN. There areseveral reasons for this.

A potentially explosive airstream is al-ways in contact with both the interior ofthe fan housing (or fan guard), and withthe fan impeller. An explosion-proofmotor is designed such that the interiorof the motor is isolated, usually by shaftseals, from contact with the airstreamoutside.

Since the potentially explosive airstreamcannot be isolated from contact with fan

components, other methods are neces-sary to minimize if not eliminate the pos-sibility of igniting the airstream.

AMCA Standard 99-0401 Classifications ofSpark Resistant Construction was developedto address the question of spark resistantconstruction, and to give fan purchasersand fan manufacturers a number of op-tions to choose from in the constructionof such fans.

Consider the ways in which such ignitionmight occur as the airstream flowsthrough the fan. Generally, the source of

ignition for a contained, potentially explo-sive airstream is a spark. Sparks mayoriginate in one of two ways.

A static discharge can cause ignition. Allthat is required is a high enough poten-tial. AMCA 99-0401 provides recommen-dations for the prevention and possibleelimination of the likelihood of such dis-charge through the use of devices whichcollect static build - up and drain it toground, rendering it harmless.A friction spark can cause ignition. In afan, the source of the friction spark

would be the contact of two componentswhich are capable of producing a frictionspark . Principally, this might be contactbetween the rotating impeller and somefixed component of the fan.

There are many ways of reducing the possi-bility of a friction spark between fan com-ponents. We say "reducing" the possibilityof contact because the fan impeller rotatesduring operation, and there are severalways in which a fixed component of the fanmight come into contact with the rotatingimpeller. If the impeller has a close runningclearance, a severe out of balance conditionmight result in metal-to-metal contact.Likewise, a fan housing is generally designedto withstand internal pressure generated bythe fan impeller, but the housing is not usu-ally designed to withstand serious externalforces resulting from accidental impact, such as might result from a dropped crateor a fork lift accident. It should be notedthat such construction is possible, shouldthe application warrant the additional cost.

Quite often, a high degree of spark resis-tance can be obtained through the carefulselection of materials used for constructingthe fan impeller and housing components.Since the generation of a spark requ ir es thatat least one material contain iron, one ap-proach is to use a material containing noiron. Such a material might be used forconstruction of the fixed components of afan, such as the housing and inlet. The im-peller, however, requires a strong materialfor structural integrity at high speed. Theuse of a material which contains little or noiron might require that

the impeller operate at a lower speed thanis needed to generate the required pres-sure, so sometimes a low or no-iron mate-rial is not a good choice for the impeller. Some copper alloys are quite suitable for

housing construction and may be "teamed"with a material having the strength suitablefor the impeller's mechanical requirements.

In addition to the trade-off of strength for spark resistance, there are a few surprises: Some non-ferrous alloys oxidize in service and become capable of generating a spark by friction. Other non-ferrous materials are prone to build-up and discharge of danger-ous static electricity. The choice of materi-als is one which should always be made withvery great care.

AMCA 99-0401 addresses the choice of

materials only in terms of ferrous or non- ferrous. It is generally accepted practice

that ferrous materials are those whose iron content is 5% or greater. The standard fur-ther addresses spark resistance in terms of

assembly of fan components. The resultis three types of spark resistant construc-tion:

Type A:Offers the highest degree ofspark resistance, requiring that the fancomponents be constructed of nonferrous material and that they be as-sembled in a manner such as to reducethe possibility of contact between anystationary and rotating component.

Type B:Offers a medium level of sparkresistance, requiring that the impellerbe constructed of non - ferrous mate-rial, and that the fan components beassembled in a manner such as to re-duce the possibility of contact betweenany stationary and rotating component.

Type C: Offers the "entry level" degreeof spark resistant construction, requir-ing that the fan components be assem-bled in a manner such as to reduce thepossibility of contact between any sta-tionary and rotating component.

These classifications were developed inresponse to equipment users' need for a way to achieve spark resistance fo r vary-ing degrees of ignition hazard . The spe-cific level of resistance necessary is onewhich only the purchaser can evaluate. The choice of any level of spark resis-tance should be determined in consulta-tion with the fan manufacturer. A fan canthen be engineered and constructed tomeet the required service level. A Techni-cal write-up contributed by Engr. John C.Sereo

it is a real possession in the chang-ing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your businessaffairs; for the world is full of trick-ery. But let this not blind you to whatvirtue there is; many persons strivefor high ideals; and everywhere life isfull of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feignaffection. Neither be cynical aboutlove; for in the face of all aridity anddisenchantment it is as perennial as

the grass.Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit toshield you in sudden misfortune. Butdo not distress yourself with darkimaginings. Many fears are born of

Go placidly amidst the noise andhaste, and remember what peacethere may be in silence. As far aspossible without surrender be on

good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly andclearly; and listen to others, eventhe dull and the ignorant; they toohave their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive per-sons, they are vexatious to thespirit. If you compare yourself withothers, you may become vain orbitter; for always there will be

greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as wellas your plans. Keep interested in

    your own career, however humble;

    fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a childof the universe, no less than thetrees and the stars; you have a rightto be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the universe is unfolding asit should. Therefore be at peace withGod, whatever you conceive Him tobe, and whatever your labors andaspirations, in the noisy confusion of

life keep peace with your soul. Withall its shams, drudgery, and brokendreams, it is still a beautiful world.Be cheerful.

    Strive to be happy.
