DIAMOND MICROFINISHING FILM

Diamond Microfinishing Film Abrasives(DMFF), from PSI, are a set of new tools availablefor hard-to-grind applications. DMFF Products,manufactured by the 3M Company, can replacetraditional coarse abrasive films commonly usedon superfinishing equipment. Designed especiallyfor fast finish reduction on hard materials, DMFF

rolls allow target finishes to be achieved in fewerpasses for greater productivity. With DMFF,superfinishing times can be cut in half or more,compared to traditional diamond honing stonesand coarser diamond lapping film.

Excellent finish is achieved by the precisiongrading system used to select the diamondabrasive particles for each grade. Classified bythe more accurate micron grading system, particlesize grading is held to much tighter tolerancesthan conventional abrasive products. This resultsin a higher density of the specified particle sizeavailable to do the grinding required. Thiscontrolled uniformity of particle size, combinedwith electrostatic coating of the polyester filmbacking, provides an unexcelled grinding product.

Product consistency is achieved andmaintained through the grinding steps by the

consistent 5 mil caliper of the dense, polyesterbacking. Unlike the traditional paper products, theabrasive particles cannot "recede" into thebacking. This feature results in shorter grind timesand longer life because the abrasive particlesremain at the "cutting" interface. Shorter grindtimes mean less heat generation in the materialbeing ground. Longer life means improvedeconomics.

When a finer finish is required, DiamondLapping Film can be used due to its ability topolish the most difficult hard and mixed hardnesmaterials quickly, without pull-out and witincredible results.

PSI Diamond Cloth Dry, manufactured by the3M Company, is a new resin bond alternative tothe traditional metal bond flexible diamondproduct. Diamond Cloth Dry helps optimize cost-effectiveness in your finishing operations. Thesediamond products are used for finishing anddimensioning ceramics, carbides and hardcoated

materials.

These products consist of micron-gradeddiamond particles encapsulated in a bondingmatrix which is then bonded to a durable resinbacking. Diamond Cloth Dry is available in beltand disc form.

Diamond Cloth Dry is designed to providelong-lasting cutting performance in a wide rangeof hardcoat finishing applications. The uniqueconstruction allows Diamond Cloth Dry to deliver

outstanding consistency throughout the life of thebelt, for improved control and fewer rejects. Itprovides optimal performance when run wet, butcan also be run dry.

3M DIAMOND LAPPING FILM

PSI Diamond Lapping Film, manufactured bythe 3M Company, is the most innovative productavailable for metallography and lappingapplications in many years. Originally developedfor audio/video reading head polishing, it is nowavailable in configurations to fit popular polishingequipment. Its ability to polish the most difficulthard and mixed hardness materials quickly,

without pull-out and with incredible flatness,makes Diamond Lapping Film a product worthinvestigating for difficult material applications.

PSI Diamond Lapping Film is available in 3specifications and 9 micron grades. All share theprecision 3-mil polyester backing, color coded foreasy grade identification. The three types differ inthe method used to secure the diamondsparticles to the polyester film backing.

PSI Diamond Lapping Film Type A is a single

layer of the specified grade diamond particlesresin bonded to the film backing. Type A isexcellent for polishing applications where verylittle material removal is required. It will have ashorter life than the other two types, but gives abetter finish grade for grade. Current applicationsinclude TEM sample preparation, printed circuitboard failure analysis and aerospace compositematerials.

PSI Diamond Film Type B consists ofdiamond particles encapsulated in small softceramic beads, which are then resin coated to thepolyester film backing. This results in a longerlasting, more aggressive product than the Type Aproduct. As the ceramic beads wear, freshdiamond particles are exposed to work on thespecimen surface. Successful applications

include tungsten carbide specimen preparation,dental materials research, nickel base superalloys, high speed tool steel and others.

3M LAPPING FILM

PSI Lapping Film, manufactured by the 3MCompany, is available from PSI in 2 minerals, 11micron grades and 2 backings. The precision 3mil thick polyester substrate is color coded foreasy grade identification. PSI packages allLapping Film in re-sealable bags to help preventproduct contamination. Lapping Film is available

in a wide variety of sheets, discs, and rolls,designed to fit popular polishing equipment or forpolishing by hand applications.

Silicon Carbide Lapping Film is the mostaggressive non-diamond product. SiC LappingFilm will remove material rapidly, leaving aconsistent scratch pattern easily removed withsuccessive polishing steps. Because of therelatively deep scratches made by SiC LappingFilm, it is not used as a step following AluminumOxide Lapping Film. Grades available in SiCLapping Film include 3, 5, 9, 15 and 30 micron.

Aluminum Oxide Lapping Film is lessaggressive than SiC Lapping Film, but isavailable in more and finer grades. Al2O3LappingFilm is available in .05, .3, 1, 3, 5, 9, 12, 30, and60 micron.

All PSI Lapping Film is available with either aPlain Back (PB) or with a Pressure Sensitive

Adhesive (PSA) back. Which backing to use isdetermined by the polishing equipment available,or, in the case of polishing by hand, by userpreference.

When polishing by hand, generally a glassplate is used as the substrate. A few drops ofwater (distilled and/or filtered) is used to "adhere"the film to the glass. Additional water is used onthe Lapping Film surface as a lubricant. The partis moved over the surface in a "figure 8" or otherpatterns. Only relatively light pressure is

required. The part should be rinsed thoroughlybetween Lapping Film grades.

When mechanical polishing is used, follow themanufacturer's instructions, with the following tipsin mind. Be sure the polishing plate is cleanbefore application of the Lapping Film discs. Any

surface contamination will force the film out ofplane, causing scratches. If the adhesive will notrelease easily after use, try a hot air gun (or hairdryer) to heat the film and plate. This will usuallyallow the film to release easily.

3M MICROFINISHING FILM

Microfinishing Film Abrasives (MFA),manufactured by the 3M Company, can replacetraditional abrasive papers commonly used. Theunique features of this product enable the user toachieve the basic requirements of finish andflatness. With MFA, these goals will be reachedwith greater speed and more repeatable results.

Excellent finish is achieved by the precisiongrading system used to select abrasive particlesfor each grade. Classified by the more accurate

micron grading system, particle size grading isheld to much tighter tolerances than conventionalabrasive products. This results in a higher densityof the specified particle size available to do thegrinding required. This controlled uniformity ofparticle size, combined with electrostatic coatingof the polyester film backing, provides anunexcelled grinding product.

Product flatness is achieved and maintainedthrough the grinding steps by the consistent 5 mi

caliper of the dense, polyester backing. Unlike thetraditional paper products, the abrasive particlescannot "recede" into the backing. This featureresults in shorter grind times and longer lifebecause the abrasive particles remain at the"cutting" interface. Shorter grind times mean lessheat generation in the material being groundLonger life means improved economics.

MFA products are available in both AluminumOxide (Al2O3) and Silicon Carbide (SiC)

Aluminum Oxide is recommended for use on

ferrous materials. Silicon Carbide product shouldbe used on non-ferrous materials. Both abrasivetypes can be ordered from PSI in discs, rolls andsheets.
