Psalm of Thanksgiving

Welcome to St. Paul

Visiting today? We are glad you are here! Stop by the Welcome center and receive a sweet gift.

Pr. Bill, our interim pastor during this time of transition, hopes you can help him learn

names more easily by wearing your name tags for worship. He likes to use people’s

names at the communion rail when serving the bread, and the name tags make that so

much easier. Thank you!

Rainbow bags for toddlers are on the wooden rack up front on the right.

A staffed nursery for infants - three year olds is on the lower level during worship

services.

Assisted listening headphones are available for those having difficulty hearing.

Large-print bulletins are available. See usher for assistance.

Please write your name and other information on the “welcome pad.”

About our Worship

We follow an ancient pattern through the liturgy (which literally means “the work of

the people”). Some parts of the service may change each week, but there is a pretty

consistent flow: praising God, hearing God’s word, offering our prayers and gifts, cele-

brating communion, and being sent into the world for service. The format remains

fairly consistent, but the style will vary widely. Sometimes we sing with the pipe organ,

and the ministers chant. Sometimes we worship accompanied by piano, guitars, drums,

violins, flutes—or whatever our folk play. We range from Bach to blues, because we

know that different styles connect to different people. So we all worship together, and

change the style every few weeks. It’s one of the ways we minister to each other and

build community. Thank you for being part of our worship and community today!

Today we welcome Doug Zimmer as our Guest Organist

Gathering Together in Worship

Prelude “Partita on ‘Come, Christians, Join to Sing’” Matthew Corl

*Call to Worship

P: We gather in the presence of a loving God,

C: Who rejoices in the righteousness of God’s people,

P: Who stands firm in the midst of suffering and torment,

C: Who holds the power to relieve suffering,

P: Who hears us even when we do not hear,

C: Who sees us even when we do not see.

P: Our God brings light and life to all who follow in God’s ways,

C: In the presence of a loving God we gather. Amen.

*Entrance Hymn: #807 “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”

*Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. P: We pray to you, almighty God, in this time of conflict. You are our refuge and our strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Do not let us fail in the face of these events. Uphold us with your love, and give us the strength we need. Help us in our confusion, and guide our action. Heal the hurt, console the bereaved and afflicted, protect the innocent and helpless, and deliver any who are still in peril; for the sake of your great mercy in Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

*Kyrie: ELW page #138 (Continued on next page )

*Hymn of Praise: “Glory to God” ELW page #139 (Continued on next page )

*Prayer of the Day P: Lord of heaven and earth, there is no one like you from the smallest grain of dust to the most magnificent planet among the stars! We rejoice, for you lift up your people and bring us into your kingdom as royalty. Hear our praise as we celebrate your goodness and bless your name. Amen.

Response: Here I am lord, Here I am.

The First Lesson Psalm 40:1-10

1I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. 4Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods. 5You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted.

6Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. 7Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. 8I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” 9I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not re-strained my lips, as you know, O Lord. 10I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. Response: I come to do your will. The Second Lesson Lamentations 1:1-3 1How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has be-come, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the prov-inces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have be-come her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting-place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress.

Response: I come to do your will. Sermon Pr. Bill Hutchison

*Hymn of the Day: #574 “Here I Am Lord”

*Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Ho-ly Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

*Prayers of the People

After each petition of the prayers:

A: Lord, in your mercy, C: Hear our prayer. *Remembering Those Who Have Died P: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all mercy and the God of all Consolation, who comforts us in all our sorrows so that we can comfort others in their sorrows with the consolation we ourselves have received from God.

On this somber day, we trust in the expectation of the resurrection to eternal life, as we remember this day those who died in the Charleston, South Carolina, shooting and who now rest from their labors, especially those family members and friends who are dear to us.

Silence for meditation

P: Let us pray. O God, we remember with thanksgiving those who have loved and served you on earth, who now rest from their labors, especially…… Keep us in union with all your saints, and bring us with them to the joyous feast of heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

*Sharing of the Peace P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us share the peace.

Offering “Mission Moment”

*Offertory Response: #182 “Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful”

*Offertory Prayer A: God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open

your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may

come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and

Lord.

C: Amen

The Distribution of Communion

The body and blood of Christ are present in this sacrament, for the forgiveness of sin

and the strengthening of faith. All people are welcome to share in this meal with us.

Parents, if you have a young child who receives communion, please indicate that when

the minister comes to you. Those who do not receive communion are welcome to come

forward for a blessing; simply keep your hands folded.

Come forward and receive the bread from the minister. Gluten-free bread is available.

The gold chalice contains wine; you may drink directly from the cup or dip your bread

into the wine. The pottery chalice contains non-alcoholic grape juice, which you may

receive by dipping your bread into the juice. Return to your seat by the side aisles.

If you would like communion brought to you, simply let an usher know.

In Our Congregation 2015-2016 Congregation Council Your Council held its annual Cross-over dinner on Monday, June 15 to welcome Carlo D’Agostino and Bud Krick, and to thank Tim Kelly, Dwight Nielsen and Howard Weiss for their service and commitment to our church. Typically, Council members will select a ministry to participate in and to provide a link for communications with Council. This year, we have held off on these selections pending the reorganization of our many minis-tries and boards around the headings suggested by the “Called” team this past winter, namely Worshiping, Learning, Caring and Serving. The “Called” team continues to meet and will soon propose how all of our many ministries and activities map to this new struc-ture. We anticipate this taking shape by the August Council meeting and in place for the start of our education year in September. Congregation members are welcome and encouraged to contact any Council member with questions or concerns about this visioning process or time of transition at St. Paul. Contact info for Council members can be found in the St. Paul Wheaton Church Directory, with extra copies available in the church office. Wheaton 4th of July Parade - Walkers Needed! On Saturday, July 4th, there are TWO great opportunities for St. Paul members and friends to show their support of partner organizations! PFLAG DuPage (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) have invited St. Paul allies and supporters to join them in their parade entries Saturday morning. Line-up is at 9am, and the parade itself will run from approximately 10am to 11:30am. Wear comfy walking shoes and your yellow 'God's work, our hands' tshirt! For more infor-mation about where to meet either of these groups on July 4th for the parade, please contact Vanessa at [email protected]. Let's get out and show our support of the LGBT community and help raise awareness of local hunger needs! Brunch to Celebrate Pastor Williamson July 12! Pastor Williamson will lead us in worship one last time on July 12. Please come to cele-brate his rich ministry at St. Paul at a brunch in his honor in Fellowship Hall after the ser-vice. Let’s join to thank him for his eight years of pastoral leadership and care, and espe-cially for spearheading new educational programs and opportunities here to guide our growth as Christians. Come say good-bye to him and Jennifer, Hope and Iris, and together we will send them off with our blessings as they prepare to relocate to Dodgeville, Wis-consin, for Pastor Williamson’s new call.

Seeking Confirmation Mentors We are currently seeking nominations for mentors in the Making Disciples program for youth preparing to affirm their baptism in January 2016. Please let us know of someone that you think would enjoy and excel in this ministry. Simply contact Vanessa Young in the church office. All nominations will be carefully considered, with an understanding of making a good match for both the mentor and the mentee to learn and grow in faith to-gether. Mentor nominees will be given the opportunity to review the details of the men-tor program and decide if it is a ministry to which they feel called. Those who have served as a mentor before are welcome and encouraged to serve again! Earth Ministry Team Tips Make used battery collection containers out of old milk jugs. Take the batteries to a recy-cle center.
