Performance Instructions

Psalm 3 is written using graphic notation to create an organic piano accompaniment. The pianist is free to shape certainlines throughout the piece following rough guidelines; the vocalist listens for various cues that the pianist must provide. Thisallows the performers to provide a slightly different and fresh rendition of the psalm for each performance.

The graphic notation is designed as follows. Patterns that the pianist can play “up and down” the keyboard are indicatedwith brackets (see beats three and four of the first line). The pianist must remain faithful to the pitch class indicated withinthe brackets, but is free to improvise flowing lines using the patterns. For example, the sixteenth notes in the first two beatsoutline a Gm̄(add2) chord and Cm̄(add2) chord respectively. The pianist can play these chords using the sixteenth textureindicated in any order or repetition desired and at any octave transposition. The goal is to make connected, smooth linesthat roughly follow the indicated graphic lines. Note that where no change is indicated, the pianist should continue playingthe octave tremolo in the left hand.

This is perhaps best illustrated by the example below which gives one possible rendition of the first line of this composition.Notice that while this example begins on the pitches indicated within the brackets in the first section and connects to theexact pitches represented in the next bracketed pattern, it need not necessarily be performed in this manner. The pianist isallowed any octave transposition of the bracketed patterns.

Figure 1: Possible Realization of Introduction (First Line)

To coordinate the ensemble, the pianist plays octave “hits” in the bass to indicate vocal entries. The vocalist needs only tolisten for those cues and enter at the appropriate time. The one exception is the entry to Verse 5. After the preceding rest, thepianist begins the tremolo and sixteenth-note pattern. The vocalist must be sure to count four beats from the beginning of thepiano pattern before entering. It is important for the pianist keep a steady tempo while improvising, and that the improvisa-tional lines change pitch class at precisely the right moments since the vocalist should hold to the written pitches and rhythms.
