Exploring Moths and Butterflies1 Have you ever looked outside and glimpsed the fluttering wings and beautiful colors of a

moth or butterfly? Both insects begin their lives as caterpillars and then, after building cocoons,

emerge as remarkably different creatures than they were.

2 It can be challenging to distinguish a moth from a butterfly, but there are a few subtle ways.

First, look closely at their antennae. In butterflies, the tips are thicker than the rest of the feelers

and look like knobs, plus they curve slightly inward. In moths, however, the antennae are either

    straight or feathery.

3 While each insect has a pattern on its wings, the colors are often dramatically different.

Butterflies tend to be brightly colored in shades of yellow, red, orange, blue, and green. Moths,

on the other hand, are usually covered with shades of brown, tan, and white.

4 You may get a clue about whether the insect is a butterfly or moth by analyzing how it rests

when it lands. If its wings remain upright, it is probably a butterfly. Moths typically rest with

their wings spread open like a soaring eagle. You can get an extra hint from what time you saw

the creature flying; if it was at night, chances are it was a moth; if it was during the day, it was a

    butterfly.

5 If you would like to learn more about butterflies, there are special ways to attract them.

Butterflies love sweet-smelling flowers, and they especially like a plant called the purple

buddleia, known to many gardeners as the butterfly bush. If you plant these types of flowers in a

garden, you are sure to catch the attention of many colorful butterflies. You may come to think

of your garden as a fireworks display.

    Moth Butterfly

6 To attract moths to the same garden, you should take a flashlight and plant it in a hole

facing upward. Just as it is getting dark, turn the light on and watch to see which moths fly over

to play. Another way to draw moths to your garden is to make a special treat that moths love.

You can make the syrup by stirring brown sugar in with some overripe fruit and water. The

mixture should then be painted onto tree trunks with a paint brush. Moths will come from all

around to enjoy this unexpected feast, and while they eat, you can watch!

    Mundillo Magic

1 I know it is a long trip, but well start early tomorrow and be there by lunchtime, Ana told

Marissa and Natalia. They were accompanying her to the annual weave festival in Isabela the

next day. Anas grandmother would be demonstrating her skills as a weaver ofmundillo lace.

2 Four hours just to look at antiquated lace? Natalia complained.

3 Notjustlace, Ana told her, lace beautifully woven by my grandmother. Ana was

unwaveringly defensive on the subject of her beloved abuelas skills.

4 Are you ready? Ana asked when they convened the next morning.

5 I guess so, Marissa yawned.

    6 Natalia nodded sleepily.

7 Lets go! Ana urged. She had looked forward to todays trip, as she hadnt seen her beloved

grandmother in almost a year. Her teenage years had brought constant activities with friends

    instead.

8 On the way to Isabela, the two reluctant passengers stared out the car windows, daydreaming.

Finally, Marissa said, Maybe we can surf this afternoon; Jobos Beach has great surfing.

9 Ana sighed, Were not going there to surf; were going there to appreciate fine woven lace!

10 When they arrived, Ana parked the car, and the girls searched for the weaving exhibits.Neither Marissa nor Natalia looked very interested in the prospect of staring at old lace, which

upset Ana. She knew, however, that once they saw the lace and the women weaving it, theyd

    change their minds.

11 When Ana spotted her grandmother, she led her friends in that direction, calling, Abuelita!

    Abuelita!

12 Doa Carolina looked up from her work, hastily putting it aside. Hijita, I havent seen you

in months! She got up and embraced Ana, while the other two gazed at Doa Carolinas loom.

On it were scattered wooden bobbins which held cotton thread. A fanciful lace piece, partly

finished and held by pins, sat in the center of the loom pillow.

13 This is lovely, Marissa said, It looks like angels wings!

14 My quinceaera dress had lace like this, Natalia sighed, but I thought only machines

    made it!

    Doa Felisa

1 Felisa Rincn de Gautier, or Doa Felisa, was born in 1897 in Ceiba, Puerto Rico. When she

was only 12, her mother unexpectedly passed away. As the oldest of nine children, she was called

upon to care for her younger brothers and sisters. Some believe that it was these early experiences

of nurturing her family that taught her the importance of helping others.

2 Although Doa Felisa was trained as a pharmacist, she was fascinated by the world of

fashion. Consequently, she traveled to New York City and educated herself in fashion design as

well as in operating and managing a dress factory. Her primary purpose in creating a fashion

business was to provide a source of work for the unemployed in Puerto Rico. Her business was

highly successful, but it did not completely satisfy her desire to help others. From that point on,

much of her life became devoted to serving the people of Puerto Rico.

3 She was a pioneer in politics, and to her, nothing was impossible. She was one of the firstwomen to register and vote in Puerto Rico. She held leadership positions in political parties, and

in 1946, she accepted a great challenge. She became mayor of San Juan and held the position for

22 years. Becoming the first woman in the Americas to hold a mayoral position in a capital city

was just the beginning for Doa Felisa. She worked tirelessly to restore historical buildings in Old

San Juan and created one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas. Determined to aid others,

Doa Felisa organized preschools, which became models for the Head Start program in the

United States. She built clinics in neighborhoods and rebuilt the Municipal Hospital. In 1954, she

received the Woman of the Americas Award, and under her leadership, San Juan received anAll-America City Award in 1959.

4 Doa Felisa was always accessible and made certain that the people of San Juan could come

to her with their troubles. She held Wednesday meetings in city hall during which people could

explain some of the problems they were facing. Children, as well as their parents, benefited from

her work. She helped organize baseball teams, provided equipment, and created ballparks. She

was instrumental in organizing Little League teams in San Juan.

5 Doa Felisa was extremely popular and received the admiration of her people. She also had

the respect of other countries such as France, Spain, Ecuador, and the United States. Today, a

museum in San Juan displays her many awards and her honorary degrees, as well as some of her

clothing and furniture. The museum gives glimpses into her life and mirrors the respect and love

given to her by the Puerto Rican people.

How to Find the Perfect University

Julios friend, Marisol, is having a difficult time finding an appropriate university to meet her needs.

Julio wrote a paper about what to look for when looking into universities. Read his paper below.

1 The transition from high school to the university is a big step for many teenagers, and a

frightening one at that. School counselors, parents, and siblings can be a big help, but ultimately,

the decision is up to you. Here are a few tips for finding a university that meets your needs.

2 Start by making a list of your priorities. What is the most important thing you look for in a

university? Perhaps you want to remain close to home so you can visit often. If that is the case,

then location is important when choosing a university. In some lucky cases, you may be able to

travel to another part of the island and still travel home often. However, if you are like many new

students, money may be an issue. This leads directly to the next priority: the cost of tuition.

3 These days many universities raise the tuition annually. In fact, the cost of university tuition

almost doubles every 10 years. Luckily, financial aid is available. In addition, scholarships and

grants can help pay the costs. It is beneficial to talk with a loan counselor in order to choose a

financial package to meet your familys needs.

4 Your high-school counselor can refer you to universities that offer classes in your field of

interest. Many students do not have a major declared when they apply to universities, but there

are a few who have an idea of what type of academic program they are looking for. Whether it is

an education, medical, or law program, most schools offer a variety of programs that will fityour interests.

5 There are many other things you could consider when choosing a university, but making a

list of priorities is the most logical first step. Once you have done that, you can branch out by

looking at several universities that meet your needs and then comparing the ones you are most

interested in. Scheduling several campus visits and talking to the students, staff, and academic

counselors will help you find out about everything from academics to activities. You may never

find one perfect match, but you should easily find several perfect characteristics that will make

your university years the most fantastic years of your life.
