Mrs. Quattrone's and Mrs. Yehl's First Graders answered the call of Mrs. Jo-liet this season by collecting items for the troops cur-rently serving in Iraq and Af-ghanistan. Mrs. Joliet sent the care packages to the troops this holiday season along with some let-
ters of appreciation from our First Graders. The First Graders learned about Wants and Needs this month and decided it would be terrifi c to give of ourselves this holiday season, in lieu of a traditional classroom gift exchange. We are very proud of our little citizens!

Red Ribbon Week was celebrated at PCS elementary with a school-wide spirit week. Students had the option to dress up for each of the special days and be a part of celebrating our drug free and safe school. Morning program students grades PreK-2nd enjoyed two visits from Red the Clown. The 3rd - 6th grade students were given an opportunity to submit an essay on “What a Safe
and Drug Free School Means to Me” for a chance to win the grand prize, a pizza party sponsored in part by Portville Forest Products, Prevention First, and Pizza Land. Congratulations to Savannah Silvestri, in Mrs. Wilson’s 3rd grade class, the win-ner of this year’s essay contest! They enjoyed a pizza party on October 27th.
Thank you to all of those who made Red Ribbon Week one that all of will remember forever!

Kindergarten Registration Form For September 2007
In order to identify all children who will enter Kindergarten in September 2007, we are asking those parents who have eligible children to com-plete this form and return it to the Elementary Offi ce at the school. Some parents have moved into the Portville District since the last census and this will give us a current listing of all children with parents’ names, preschool siblings’ names, and current addresses. This information is necessary when we initiate Kindergarten Registration in April. We are requesting that you return this form to the Elementary Offi ce as soon as possible regardless of whether or not you plan to send your child to Kindergarten next year. Your child must be 5 years of age on or
before December 1, 2007. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sixth grade students recently took a trip to the Old Red Schoolhouse Nature Center in Shingle-house, Pennsylvania. We were given the op-portunity for a hands on experience with many different animals. Bwana Jim provided a presentation with many interesting and unique facts. The trip was a culmination of our science unit on vertebrates and invertebrates.
These students are commended for their bravery! From left to right: Karie Keech, Michael Lukomski, Courtney Ewings, Emily Bantelman, and Alex Carr.
Hands On Learning (Yikes!)
On the 50th day of school, November 15, 2006, the Kindergarten classes celebrated this milestone by having a “50’s” day.
The day began with dancing and sing-ing at Morning Program in 50’s clothes; the girls were in poodle skirts and scarves, the boys had rolled up jeans, white T-shirts and slicked-back hair.
The fun continued with a “Sock Hop” where the students learned a few dances, did the Limbo and practiced their hula-hooping.
The students brought in collections of 50 items to practice counting to 50 and played games from the 50’s (Candy Land and Checkers). The celebration concluded with everyone enjoying ice cream fl oats! What fun!

Brass Clinic Hits a High Note with Portville and Houghton StudentsThis past November 28-29, Paul
Gaspar, a trumpet player from Rochester, came to Houghton College to perform Maynard Ferguson’s amazing high note trumpet parts with the Houghton Col-lege Jazz Workshop. The concert at Houghton was a big success and also featured several Portville Central High School students and their teachers. Courtney Sprout, Katlin Gerringer and Mr. Jesse Archer all performed on their instruments, along with Mr. Ken Crane (who directs the Houghton College jazz groups).
While our trumpet soloist was in town staying with Mr. Crane, we had the privilege of having Mr. Gaspar teach
an after-school brass clinic on breathing, fl exibility and the key to high notes for
brass players from grades 5-12. Mr. Gaspar also taught along side with Mr. Crane in various instrumen-tal lessons that day.
Mrs. Gaspar has played lead trumpet and been the musical director for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus for over ten years. He currently plays in a variety of latin and jazz bands in Rochester and is continuing his studies at the Eastman School of Music.

Every spring, music students from Cat-taraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara Counties participate in a NYSSMA Solo Festival (instrumental and vocal). All of the scores are reviewed, and the highest overall students are chosen to participate in a select ensemble called Area All-State (AAS). Composed of the most talented students in Western New York, these ensembles are directed by well known composers, conductors, and educators, and perform highly challenging music.
Recently, 11 students represented PCS at the AAS Music Festivals after achieving outstanding scores at the NYSSMA Solo Festival in June 2006.
At the Junior High Level, Julian Ziaggi (7th grade), Kole Katsigiannis, Alexa Campbell, Stephanie Grabbitt, Anna Lund (8th grade), and Hannah Walker (9th grade) made the Chorus. They had the op-portunity to sing under the direction of Mr. Keith Ersing, the choral director at West Seneca West Senior High School.
Autumn Severtson (7th grade, Tuba) made the Band, under the direction of Dr. Gregory Rudgers from Elmira College. The festival was held at Royalton-Hart-land Central School in Middleport, NY, on November 3 and 4.
High School Area All-State was at SUNY Fredonia on November 17 & 18. Senior Colton Mostacato and junior Luke Mayo (trumpet), along with sophomores Courtney Sprout (trombone) and Ashley Taylor (clarinet) made the High School Band. Their director was Dr. Stephen Gage from Youngstown State University. Senior Jessica Schoonover and junior Danielle Campbell made the High School Chorus, which was directed by Mr. Jack Sternisha, a retired vocal director from Fredonia High School. Congratulations to all students for a remarkable achievement.

After the fi rst of the New Year, we will begin a new reading contest at the Portville Library, based loosely on the favorite game of Monopoly. As players roll the dice and travel the board, they will read many wonderful books and earn some good prizes, too. So, children in grades K-6, come join the fun as you explore new worlds by playing Readopoly.

Panthers in Buffalo On December 2 the Portville Central
School Boys JV and Varsity Basketball teams traveled to Buffalo, New York, for a unique day trip! The Panthers scrimmaged John F. Kennedy High School in the late morning. After the scrimmage, they enjoyed the after-noon at the Galleria Mall, holiday shopping and eating. The trip culminated that night by traveling to the University of Buffalo to take in Division I Men’s and Women’s College Basketball Games. Both games were played between University of Buffalo and Niagara University. Prior to the Men’s game, sixteen students from the group won upgraded seats. Twelve of them sat in end line box seats, two sat court side on media row, and two really
lucky students sat courtside on Lazy Boy recliners! The trip was a great success, and everyone enjoyed the experience. Go Panthers!

We Had AHAPPY THANKSGIVING
Mrs. Lott's and Mrs. Clark's kindergarten classes reenacted the fi rst Thanksgiving. Here are some of the pilgrims and indians that attended the feast. It was enjoyed by all!
The kindergarten classes sangsongs about Thanksgiving in morning program.
To spread a little joy around our community this holiday season, the fi rst graders from Mrs. Cole’s and Mrs. Yehl’s classes went caroling for the Senior Citizens at the Portville Manor, Portville Square Apartments and ECHO. We dressed up like little turkeys and sang with smiles on our faces.
