Our rides are done for the year, and what a great year of riding we had! We rode in some beautiful places within our state, meeting old and new friends along the way, not to mention a certain pig by the name of Violet. There are some really good stories about her! Tracy Porter caught us all off guard with Violet.

District 5’s ride in October, the Poker Crawl, was just that…a crawl, due to the weather. We were fortunate all summer long with Mother Nature cooperating and not raining on us. She made up for it on the October ride. It really rained hard! It was the first time I have seen horses saddled and ridden right out of the trailer. With Diane winning the Open Division, that also put our Year End Award for the Open Division into a tie. You will have to ask Diane and Lee how they broke that tie! The Year End Award winners are as follows:

After our ride, we all went to downtown Ontario for the WSHCEF fundraiser.

Mike McGowan made his famous cowboy stew and Clara Laufenberg made the desserts. We all ate well and it was delicious! After dinner, we danced until 11:00 with Tor Ennis and his band. Our silent and live Auctions went really well. We were hoping to have raised enough money to purchase Wildcat Moun-tain State Park a glide for large animal rescue at their park. We hope that they will never have to use the glide, but it is a comfort to know it is there in case they need it.

The Friesian Horse The Friesian horse is the only breed of horse native to the Netherlands, even during the 13th century, horses of the Friesian type were being described. By applying a consistent policy of breeding, Friesian horses, as we know them today, still share the specific breed characteristics and therefore similarities with their ancient ancestors. Friesians are well known for their beautiful front, thick hair on their mane, tail and fetlocks, black color and their extended, powerful lofty gaits. The well-proportioned structure of the noble head placed on a slightly arched neck is the key to the breed’s elegant appearance and proud bearing. The Friesian’s friendly character is the link to a fine horse that can be used for many purposes.

The Friesian Keuring (Inspection) was a 2 day event held March 24th and 25th in Marshfield, WI. The 2 judges want to see a horse presented in a quiet and accurate way so that a horse gets the possibility to walk andto show a good trot with supple-ness . This is the best way to show the rhythm, regularity and balance of the horse.

For the first inspection, the horse must be lined up with his side to the judge. The side of the mane must not be on the side of the judges.

The walk must be showed once around the arena for two rounds. The trot must be showed around the whole arena for two rounds (little or no whip, rattlebox is allowed). Horses must go round the course twice. Horse needs to walk on his own legs (without help from the runners), After the trot, the horse must be lined up again unless the judges say otherwise.

4th Annual Oregon Holiday Horse Parade

The Oregon Horse Association (OHA) in conjunction with the Oregon Chamber of Commerce is holding the 4th annual Ore-gon Holiday Horse Parade to be held in downtown Oregon, WI on November 10, 2012 at 1:30 PM. The parade is unique in that it is exclusively a horse parade to cel-ebrate the kick off of the holiday season and encourage visitors to the communi-ty. "Since Oregon is considered the "Horse Capital of Wisconsin" it seems fitting to hold an all horse event," says Barbara Waters, President of OHA. The

number of participants has ranged from 50 to 70 horses including walkers, riders and carriage drivers. November is a great time to participate in a fun event with your horse when the show and trail ride season is coming to a close.

Awards are given out to the 1) best holiday costume theme; 2) most creative costume; and 3) best group costume theme. Each year participants enjoy the parade so much they always encourage OHA to continue sponsoring the event. "We charge a small registration fee to help cover the costs to put on the parade," states Waters, "but it is definately not intended to be a money making event." Preregistration is required to participate and fees double after Nov. 2nd. Visit oregonhorseassociation.org for registration details or call Sandy at 608-455-7104.

End of Trail Campground I had the wonderful experience the last weekend in Septem-ber of spending four days at End of the Trail Campground in Ontario, WI. If any of you read my articles, you already know that this is one of my favorite places to ride. It was a beauti-ful time as the fall colors were at their peak. The weather cooperated as it was sunny and cool the whole weekend. It as also the weekend of the full harvest moon. It was so bright at night we could see our shadows! It made it easier to check

the horses at night too. I've included a couple of pictures to entice you to ride in this area when you get the chance. It is worth it. I had to euthanize my trail riding buddy this past July due to a brain tumor. He was a steady and enjoyable ride and I miss him terribly. I am fortunate in having friends who will share their extra horses with me so that I can still ride with them. Thank you

especially to Glenn Wisneski for letting me ride his mare, El Phava Blue. She is a really nice Rocky Mountain mare that I learned a lot about gaited horses while rid-ing. Thank you also to Gail Seasor for letting me ride her Rocky Moun-tain mare, Dee. Since I have been riding gaited horses lately, guess which horse I purchased. A Rocky Mountain mare. She is not trained yet but will be my winter project. One I'm looking forward to. One of our club members reached a riding milestone this sum-mer. She is a member of the Wisconsin Horse Council ride/drive program. She has accrued 1500 hours of riding time and was awarded

an embroidered jacket for her accomplishment. Congratulations Gail Seasor. May you ride many more hours. You are an Inspiration to me

and many other trail riders.

2012 Southeastern Equestrian Trails Conference

July 12-14 Lexington, KY

There were many topics covered at the SETC in 2012 but the thing that caught my attention the most was a group of children. The kids mainly rode their horses in an arena, showing in 4-H. They were invited to go out to a park & experience what so many of take for granted. Each of the kids then did a short talk about their experience at the conference. They talked about learning some of the rules of ‘leave no trace’. Some things to remember and prac-tice while we are enjoying the outdoors with our horses are carrying out what we bring in and picking up things that others may have left behind. They talked about putting up a tie line using a strap on the tree so the bark isn’t dam-aged and how an old horse girth works for this and making sure your horse is far enough away from the tree so it can’t reach the tree to chew or crib. One of the kids talked about clearing the trails back away from the trail tread and how a trail should be built on the contour of any hillside.

The person that really got my attention was a young girl that had been on a trail ride last year and how it has changed her outlook. She said it all started a fire in her. It started the fire for her to continue to ride horses after 4-H is over, now that she knows there are more aspects to horses than just showing. It started the spark to learn more about being a steward of the land and spread that word. It sparked her to look into ways that she can help now and get others involved. She said that her experience was so meaningful that she came back this year to encourage the other youth and learn more.

Through this experience she has also learned to become a better more comfortable speaker. She had been so im-pressed at how many adults where wanting to hear her story she felt compelled to tell it again & again. She remind-ed the adults that we needed to pass on the information we know so the youth can absorb it and continue to do ‘our work’ as we become unable. She also gave us a ‘wake up’ call, saying that the youth are the next generation to keep the heritage of horses in our lives & on our trails.

I found that, as there were many speakers at SETC, there were very few if any pro-grams to get youth involved. I was sad to find that when some of these children tried to ask questions they seemed to be overlooked. If we do nothing else with the youth of the equine industry let us please at least make sure their questions are not overlooked.

I hope this will change because we need all those sparks to burn bright for the future of the horse industry & the trails within it. I am hoping to get a group of 4-H kids to take out next spring & see if I can spark a fire.

Rodeo Tradition Continued at 2013 Midwest Horse Fair®

The All-American spirit of a professional rodeo will be showcased at the 2013 Midwest Horse Fair®. The three-day event, held April 19, 20 & 21 – 2013 at the Alliant Energy Center

in Madison, WI will again feature the Midwest Horse Fair® PRCA Rodeo sponsored by Nutrena. True to their American herit-age, Barnes PRCA Rodeo Company will be bringing their world-class rough stock back to Madison for the Friday, April 19, 2013 rodeo. Since 1950 Barnes PRCA Rodeo has been setting the pace in the rodeo industry.

“The Rodeo has become a tradition at the Midwest Horse Fair®,” explains Rhonda Reese, General Manager of the Midwest Horse Fair®. “With sell-out crowds for the past several years, we are looking forward to bringing back this night of extreme sport.”

Several Specialty Acts will only add to the excitement of the intense competition. Additional information can be found at www.MidwestHorseFair.com.

The Midwest Horse Fair® PRCA Rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. A separate ticket is re-quired for the Rodeo. Reserved seat tickets will go on sale in early January. The Coliseum will be cleared each night and specta-tors must have a ticket to re-enter.

World Championship Blacksmiths to Return to the 2013 Midwest Horse Fair®

The World Championship Blacksmiths will be returning to the Midwest Horse Fair® in 2013. This age-old art gathers blacksmiths from all over the country to promote their

mission of inspiring excellence through education within the farrier industry.

The start of the 7th annual season of the World Championship Blacksmith series will kick off at the 2013 Midwest Horse Fair®. "Our group looks forward to having a fresh start at the beginning of the season," explains Christine Trnka, organizer of the event, "the Midwest Horse Fair® is great for this because of its location, ease of working with the Fair, the Fair itself and the local restaurants and breweries."

Each of the classes are scored and points are awarded to the winners to earn a spot at the National Championship. Attendees can also enjoy Mercury Match Play, a fun competition for both the competitors and spectators. Meant to warm up the com-petitors, it pits one competitor against another in a double elimination, preparing them for the official rounds of the competi-tion. Competitors will make horseshoes from a stock piece of steel to the judge’s specification during timed events and the competition will conclude with a Live Shoeing Class.

Ray Ainsworth “The Man Horses Talk To” appearing at the Midwest Horse Fair®

Ray Ainsworth, known as the man horses talk to, will be featured as a clinician at the 2013 Mid-west Horse Fair®. The expo is one of the nation’s top three-day equestrian events and will be

held April 19, 20 & 21 – 2013 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.

Ainsworth was born and raised in Raymond, Mississippi. From a young age, he studied the language of horses. As a winning jockey, trainer, and competitor, Ainsworth developed and fine-tuned a resistance-free, no-nonsense technique that he uses in teaching horses and working with behavioral issues of every kind.

Now days, Ainsworth travels the United States giving entertaining and informative clinics to horse lovers. In addition to his se-ries of teaching DVDs, he has a weekly half-hour television show on RFD-TV. Through all of these avenues, Ainsworth teaches all types of horses how to behave the right way with a maximum of understanding and a minimum of stress to the horse. Ains-worth works with young foals, old mares, abused horses, trailer-shy horses, as well as horses who will not allow their feet and ears to be handled and every horse in between.

Opportunities are available for participants to work with Ray Ainsworth at the 2013 Midwest Horse Fair®. Details can be found at www.MidwestHorseFair.com. Ray Ainsworth’s appearance is proudly sponsored by Blain’s Farm & Fleet.

Maximum amount that could be approved for any one project or event is $5,000. For requests more than $5,000, the application has to go to our Board of Directors. Funding amounts vary depending on the purpose of the re-quest and how it fits with the WHC Mission statement. WHC grants offer funding for organizations in need of assistance for a specific use. We encourage fund raising efforts by your organization, as we may match those funds up to a limited amount.

Organizations applying for a grant must be a WHC Level 2 or Level 3 member. Applications must be post-marked by February 21. Money is awarded after July 1, the beginning of WHC’s fiscal year.

Grant money is not provided for normal operating expenses, horse show judges, awards, food, repairs to personal property or new building construction, feed or hay. Applications are analyzed and their merit assessed based upon the following criteria:

Educational value

Horse industry promotion value

How many people it will reach

Whether the project benefits youth

Whether the money will be well spent

Visit web site for more details & application form . Or, information can be mailed to you.
