INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVES

1. Chiquimula1.1 HistoryThe department of Chiquimula has an amazing history it was created in 1871. The Chiquimula area has been economically and socially important since prehistoric times. In 1851 during the Battle of La Arada the Guatemala military forces had an important victory over El Salvador and Honduras Military forces. For this reason Chiquimula was named (Ciudad Procer) Hero City. During the colonial time it was the called the Kingdom Road because it was the commercial way from Guatemala City to the department of Izabal. One of the most visited places is Esquipulas. Visitors from many places come to this municipium to worship the Black Jesus Christ who is at the Basilica of Esquipulas.

1.2.1 Jocotn: It is a municipality in the department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. It is located in the north of the department, near the border with Honduras. It covers an area of 148 km and has a population of over 40,000 inhabitants.1.2.2 Camotn: belongs to the department of Chiquimula in Guatemala, in addition to the county seat, has 29 villages and 78 hamlets. 1.2.3 Esquipulas: Esquipulas, a municipality located in the central eastern eastern Guatemala, is part of the department of Chiquimula. Its county seat is the city of Esquipulas, founded during the Spanish and initially called Santiago Esquipulas colony;It has an area of 532 km and shares borders with the Republics of Honduras and El Salvador and other municipalities in the department of Chiquimula in Guatemala. The municipality is divided into twenty villages and an urban region.1.2.4 Olopa: The municipality is of pre-Hispanic origin, originally inhabited by Chorti tribes and then by the valley of Anahuac. It was established as a municipality on April 28, 1870.1.2.5 San Juan la Ermita: Celebrates its celebration on December 20 of each year in honor of its patron St. John the Baptist. It has no official date of foundation as the village is very old. In existence since colonial times and he was also a victim of the Spanish conquest.1.2.6 San Jos la Arada: It is municipality in the department of Chiquimula of the northeast region of the Republic of Guatemala. This town celebrates its celebration on March 19 every year in honor of St. Joseph.1.2.7 San Jacinto: The municipality of San Jacinto was the home of many poblares of different ethnicities and races. The first settlers who lived in the town were people chort race, and then the Indians who lived in the town Resume reached their land in search of frtileas land for their crops; Spanish people also lived and they took the land.1.2.8 Ipala: The municipality covers an area of 228 km and the head has an altitude of 832 meters. The titular feast is celebrated in the month of January ien honor of San Ildefonso; and among the attractions is the Ipala volcano whose crater contains a lake.1.2.9 Quetzaltepeque: This town celebrates its celebration in honor of San Francisco on November 11 of each year, the nomzalbre has the meaning of "Cerro Del Quetzal".1.2.10 Concepcin las Minas: The Town of Conception Mine is located 15 kilometers from the border with the Republic of El Salvador and 19 kilometers from the City of Esquipulas.Su business is based on a comprehensive trade and livestock movement and remittances from its emigrants as many of its inhabitants live in the United States1.2.11 General Data2. Places to visit in Chiquimula2.1 Ipala Volcano and LagoonThe Ipala volcano is a peculiar one, since it has a lagoon in its crater. The lagoon, of almost 59 hectares of diameter is located at approximately 1,500 m altitude. The fresh green atmosphere is an ideal setting for picnics, walking, taking pictures, and bird watching. Access is easy, comfortable, and safe.2.2 Quetzaltepeque VolcanoThe volcano is located 10 km from Quetzaltepeque town. If you climb the top at ca 2000 m, you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view and scenery.2.3 The Pila PozaTake a relaxing bath in this well that is located in Jocotan town at the shores of the Rio Grande River. There are many cooking places underneath big beautiful trees. This place invites you to relax and meditate.2.4 The Compadres StoneInteresting story with lots of imagination! The legend about these stones has it that god punished two travellers going to the Basilica, who were had an affair although they were compadres. They were transformed into stones. Even today this legend about sin is often told.2.5 Montecristo Small MountainIt is located at the border with El Salvador and Honduras. Around it the "Friendship Biosphere" is located which has been declared as a Biosphere Reserve. At the top, you can find a humid, fresh, cloudy, and abundant forest with a lot of wild life. This forest is the heart of the reserve and an ideal place for those who like to climb, walk, and study nature and for environmental education.2.6 The Peregrino Historical RouteMany years ago you needed to cross a place full of trees, ditches, and deep holes in order to get from Quetzaltepeque to Esquipulas. It is an ideal place for walking, taking pictures, enjoy nature, bird watching, or just to relax and meditate.3. Local fairsChiquimula, August 15; Camotan, December 8; Concepcion Las Minas, February 25; Esquipulas, January 15, July 25; Ipala, January 23; Jocotan, July 25; Olopa, March 15; Quetzaltepeque, November 12; San Jacinto, February 8; San Jose La Arada, March 19; San Juan La Ermita, August 29.4. Artisanry4.1 CeramicsThe ceramics here correspond to the traditional ceramic style and they produce jugs, dishes for baking tortillas, containers and bowls in the municipalities of Chiquimula, Jocotn, Camotn, Olopa, Concepcin Las Minas and Quezaltepeque. In the municipality of Concepcin las Minas they create glazed ceramics in plate, vase and basin designs.4.2 BasketsThey weave elaborate baskets in the municipalities of Camotn, Jocotn, San Juan Ermita, Olopa, Quezaltepeque and Concepcin las Minas.4.3 RopeThey create a diversity of products from the fibers of the maguey, among them items for hanging clothing, rugs, purses, mats, saddlebags and hammocks. They are fabricated in the municipalities of Chiquimula, Jocotn, Camotn, San Juan Ermita, Olopa, Quezaltepeque and Concepcin Las Minas.4.4 LeatherIn the municipalities of Chiquimula, Jocotn, San Juan Ermita, Ipala, Quezaltepeque, Concepcin Las Minas and Esquipulas they utilize prime tanned skin materials in the production of purses, saddles and other riding gear.4.5 FireworksA diversity of pyrotechnics is crafted in the municipalities of Quezaltepeque, Concepcin las Minas and Esquipulas.4.6 GourdsVarious products are produced in this material in the municipality of Chiquimula.4.7 SweetsThe candies of Esquipulas and Concepcin las Minas are also very important as are products of wood, palm, and metal, tiles, and tulle and construction materials.5. Traditions5.1 Cofradas and Hermandades In Chiquimula the old cofradas have been reduced in the present day to "mayordomas" and take the name of "Corporacin de Mayordomos". They are in charge of the organization and administration of the patron festivals that are celebrated in the municipalities of Chiquimula, Esquipulas and Quezaltepeque.The cofrada of Villa de Quezaltepeque has always preserved its original structure, with the constituents of "two mayores, one cofrade, two auxiliares, four tenances and the alguaciles". The tenances are four women in charge of tasks, for the cofrada and the church, such as providing flowers and necessary adornments.5.2 DancesThe most popular dance in Chiquimula is the Moros y Cristianos, which is performed for the patron festivals under distinct variations that are first practiced in Quezaltepeque and then dispersed to adjacent municipalities like Chiquimula and Esquipulas. The known variations are the Historia de la Exaltacin de la Santa Cruz, Historia Famosa del Cerco de Roma y sus Dos Desafos, Historia de Muley and the Historia Famosa de Fierabrs.6. EsquipulasEsquipulas is undoubtedly the most visited tourist site in the department of Chiquimula. In it is the Basilica with its Black Christ, who enjoys great devotion not only i n the country but in neighboring countries of Central America and Mexico. Around the temple visitors can buy religious souvenirs and regional sweets.

RouteIn vehicle must drive on the CA-9 highway to the Atlantic to Rio Hondo, 131 kilometer jurisdiction of Zacapa. From there take the CA-10 highway heading south for 44 kilometers.

CONCLUSINIn this work we explains about the department of Chiquimula, it becomes to appreciate the beauty of our country, for people who are interested to travel over there can do it now with more information and some contact as they cam spend and in where can stay, as well as learn bout the department and their foods and traditions, the department of Chiquimula are very interesting because we can enjoy the tourists places and the Flora and Fauna.

RECOMMENDATION Investigate more about the culture, and the traditions of the department. Look in books about the stories and the best if the department. Travel to Chiquimula and enjoy the best department of Guatemala. Know our country further to have more reference for other countries.
