Connecting poly pipe

When you’re joining polyethylene (PE or poly) the key things to consider are that you cut the pipe square and ensure you have the right fitting to suit your pipe.

Rural Class B poly pipe, used for low pressure applications, uses a compression fitting with an insert, often red in colour. Metric poly pipe, or blue stripe, for high pressure applications up to PN16 (16 bar), uses a compression fitting that joins on the outside of the pipe.

Iplex Poliplex Blue Line® HDPE Pipe

Iplex Poliplex Blue Line® HDPE Pipe is assessed by an independent third-party certifying organisation to meet or exceed the requirements of Australian Standard AS/NZS 4130 and has the tick of approval.

When you need a safe, reliable water supply you can’t do better than choosing Australian-made, Iplex Poliplex Blue Line® HDPE Pipe.

See your local ProWater expert in-store for all pipe rating and specification information.

Only AS/NZS 4130 certified metric pipe provides an assurance that:

• It meets the stringent Australian drinking water requirements to protect your health

• Contains adequate antioxidant to meet the 50-year design life requirements

• Is protected against UV degradation by a minimum of 2% carbon black

• Meets the nominated pressure requirements of Australian Standards

Whilst Rural Green-Stripe poly pipe and fittings are a convenient means of transporting low-pressure water for stock and crops on your property, it lacks the quality and performance that only comes with Australian Standard AS/NZS 4130 product certification. The extended range of metric pipe sizes and pressure classes provides flexibility in design and savings in the cost of associated fittings.

optimising your poly pipe life and performance

• Whenever possible, bury pipes to protect against fire and solar radiation damage.

• Bury pipe at least 750mm beneath unsealed roadways.

• Avoid dragging pipe over stony ground or scratching the pipe’s surface during installation.

• Never use chlorine dioxide to disinfect water carried in polyethylene pipe.

• Install air valves at high points to reduce the likelihood of severe water hammer.

• Maintain the pipe wall temperature below 45°C.

• Use Australian Standard AS/NZS 4130 Poliplex Blue Line® pipe for drinking water applications.

As we head into the summer months, it is an excellent time to ensure your livestock watering system is in good working condition.

Here are a few tips from your local ProWater expert to ensure you’ll be able to rest easy this summer.

What do I need to set up, update or expand my system?Whilst there are many options, a common approach to setting up on-farm water infrastructure is to pump water from its source to a header tank, then use gravity to feed stock troughs. This allows the header tank to serve as a buffer for the pump and water source.

Whatever your water system, it is important that you use high quality

components to ensure that your infrastructure will stand the test of time and your livestock always have consistent access to clean drinking water.

PumpsWith a wide range of pumps to suit various applications, it is important to check that your pump meets your specific circumstances. For example you need to consider:• Does the pressure delivered suit or

match your pipe system?• What power system suits you (petrol,

diesel, solar or electric)?• What level of automation do you need

(hand start or automatic)?

If you already have a pump set up it can be a good time to have the pump serviced. An electrician can also conduct

a megger test of the motor windings. Check your pump is still primed, the pump bearings are suitably greased, fittings and pipe are still suitably connected and, lastly, bleed air out of the system.

Pipe and FittingsTwo key issues regarding your pipe selection will be 1) to choose a diameter that will deliver the right amount of water at the right speed to suit your livestock requirements, and 2) ensure the pipe has a pressure rating in line with the requirements of your system.

Poly pipe is the most popular choice due to its durability for use both above and below ground. It is important to check that you select the right pipe depending upon what pressures your system will

work at. For example, if using water from a high pressure source such as mains, metric pipe would be a good option. Or, if using a gravity fed system, rural poly pipe would most likely suit best.

The most vulnerable part of any pipe system is the connections. For this reason it is critical that only high quality products are used. Make sure you select the right fittings for the right pipe. You’ll need to use an insert-based fitting for the PN6 rural pipe due to the relatively thin wall of the pipe, whereas the metric compression fittings will grip onto the outside of the thicker walled blue-line poly.

ValvesJust as you should select the right pipe size based on your circumstances, when choosing your tank or trough float valves

it is important to make sure you select one that suits your stock water needs. The key is to use a valve that will deliver water to the trough as quickly as the stock draw from it, whilst being able to close off effectively based on the pressure coming into the trough through the valve (shut off pressure). Your local ProWater expert can offer a wide selection of premium quality float valves in both plastic and metal that offer a range of flow rates and shut off pressures.

System MaintenanceWhen it comes to maintaining your system there are some simple tips that will help keep your water infrastructure in fighting fit condition. These include:• When cleaning, it also helps to check

your trough to ensure the valve is

in good working condition with no blockages, that there are trough lids keeping valves safe from stock and that you have a spare valve in case of emergency

• Drive around your major pipelines to ensure there are no wet/green patches which can be an indication of leaks

• Check that your water tanks and troughs have appropriate water levels and pressures. This can be an indication of how your system is performing or any potential leaks/issues

• It is also a good time to check that your fire system is in good working condition and all members of the family know how to start the pump if needed and are aware of the farm fire plan.

Stay safe this bushfire season

An engine driven pump will provide you with water in the event that the electricity supply is isolated. If you already own an engine drive pump, it’s now time to service the engine and check the hoses. Ensure stale fuel is removed and oil levels and filters are maintained. Your engine pump will then start and work reliably when required. Plan now and ensure you’re ready.

rainwater tank installation

When installing tanks:

• The tank site must be flat and level, the area well compacted and free from any rocks, stones and sharp objects.

• Ensure that the prepared site is at least 600mm larger in diameter than the tank.

• A 75mm (3”) base of compacted crusher dust may be used as a tank pad. A reinforced concrete slab is also acceptable.

• The overflow must be piped well clear of the tank to avoid undermining of the tank base.
