I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude for adopting me into your family. You have given me the greatest gifts anyone can possess: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. These are very precious Open Letter to America possessions. I know that you have not solved every problem of how men and women should live and you may have made mistakes in your own affairs and mistakes in the affairs of the world. I do know how your heart aches for the underpriviledged and depressed people of any country. You are always ready to help where help is needed and believe that each human life is precious. You do not want to rule the world and you do not believe in a master race, but you look to the future of free men and women. Your system of government has endured two centuries, flexible to change and conditions, but without essential change. It is truly a government of the people, for the people and by the people. Dear Uncle Sam,

First of all, “Happy Birthday and God bless you.” You were born in battle, unified in battle, ready and willing always to fight for your deep beliefs that all men are created equal and to grant them the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude for adopting me into your family. You have given me the greatest gifts anyone can possess: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. These are very precious

Open Letter to America

possessions.

I will pray that the Almighty God will bless you, save you from discord and confusion and endow you with the spirit of wisdom to make the right decision and that you will always be One Nation Under God.

With love. Your adopted niece,

Inge

An Early American Who Should Be on the Ten Dollar Bill

About a year ago I had the task of helping a friend of mine in her 90s prepare her report for the July meeting of her study club. She had been given the life of Robert Morris (a new biography had just come out), a person I knew nothing about. I now know that he played a crucial role in the success of the American Colonies’ war against England and in placing the fledging United States on a firm economic footing in the world.

Morris was born in England in 1734. His family migrated to Maryland in 1747 where his father engaged in tobacco farming. At the age of 16 he was sent to Philadelphia for an apprenticeship in

Notes from the desk of Charles Tolbert

banking. A short while later, he and a partner established a bank and shipping firm that eventually became very successful, lasting nearly 40 years. He also found time to participate in politics, beginning with his election to various state-wide positions.

In 1775 Morris was chosen to represent Pennsylvania in the Second Continental Congress. There he played an incredible role. The Congress contracted with his company to import arms and ammunition. A year later he chaired a secret committee that devised a system of smuggling war supplies from France. While serving on the marine committee, he sold his best ship to the Congress. He

even loaned his own money to provide provisions for distressed troops.

In 1781 he was again elected a member of the Continental Congress at the time the system of operating through committees was changed by establishing executive offices. He was given responsibility for finance and marine (the navy). Among his recommendations as “Superin-tendent of Finance” were establishment of a national mint and the use of decimal currency.

Morris was elected to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and it was there that he had the good fortune to nominate his friend George Washington as the nation’s

first President.

Washington wanted to appoint him Secretary of the Treasury in 1789, but he declined, suggesting instead, Alexander Hamilton, who was a supporter of his policies.

Serving in the U.S. Senate from 1789 to 1795, Morris generally backed Hamilton’s economic proposals which were, in fact, a rework of Morris’s earlier ideas. As a senator from Pennsylvania, he is credited with helping to bring the Federal Government to Philadelphia in 1790 for a 10-year period while Washington, D.C., was under construction. He gave up his home to be used by President Washington as the Executive Mansion from 1790 to 1797. We are looking forward to a hot but fun-filled July

Activity Calendar. We are going to explore two dining arenas this month – July 12th we are heading to B. J.’s restaurant and on July 26th we will be enjoying northern Italian cuisine at the T.S.T.C. culinary café. We have added an additional Texas super-sized card bingo on July 30th. Other outings include two trips to Geneva Hall Bingo on the 5th and 19th. We will be enjoying the music jamboree at Lee Lockwood on July 11th. We will have our Forum meeting on the second week due to the holiday on the fourth. For any questions related to activities please contact Rheadene or David for assistance.

Robert Morris is one of only two persons who signed three very significant documents: the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, and the United States Constitution.

Aloha Luau!

Residents kicked off the hot days of summer by attending a luau in June. Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun.

New Friends at Providence Park

Alan and Theo Pilot and everyone at Providence Park want to welcome Mr. Horak to St. Elizabeth Place Assisted Living

Mr. Horak was born and grew up in Penelope, Texas. He finished high school and joined the Navy in 1942. He had to have his parent’s signature to enlist because

he was only seventeen years old. He was sent to the Pacific where he overhauled engines during World War II.

Eugene met Marie at a Halloween Party and they were married in 1947 after his return home from his military service. He worked for about 24 years as a Station Agent for the Southern Pacific

Welcome Eugene Horak Apt. 2220Railroad. During those years they lived in Denison, Ennis and Galveston, Texas. He said the most enjoyable years were those while they were in Galveston.

The Horaks’ moved to West, Texas in 1985 when he retired. This was where Marie grew up. During retirement Eugene has delivered Meals on Wheels. He also keeps up with railroad activities and mentioned new tracks being built from California to Kansas City for speedier freight transportation.

Mr. and Mrs. Horak lost their home and most of their possessions in the explosion in West. They would like to make their home there again, but are glad to be here at St. Elizabeth’s for now.
