The Database

• Software from Resourca• They hold the images on

their server• Using Dreamweaver we

set up a webpage interface

• Images are indexed by contributor, location and keyword as well as by tourism subject area

• Advantages: price, good technical support, stability

• Disadvantages, not as flexible as we’d hoped – some problems with the webpage interface

• Indexing issues

Contributors• Mostly academics, but we welcome anyone with good

images • A list of wanted images will be on the webpage• Images are emailed to the project manager• Letter of agreement will be sent to the contributor but the

website explicitly states that the copyright remains with the image creator

• Users are required to acknowledge the photographer and agree to terms and conditions of use

Why use images?Tourism students, attracted to the subject by the opportunity to

investigate places and cultures may be attracted to teaching methods which are not only text centred

The use of pictures with text is particularly efficient in enhancing levels of comprehension (Levin, 1989)

Sustainable Tourism (WTO)Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key

element in tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity.

Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance.

Ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income-earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty alleviation.
