World War I (WWI) was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11

November 1918. It involved all the world's great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the

Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and Russia) and the Central Powers

(originally the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy; but, as AustriaHungary had taken the

offensive, against the agreement, Italy did not enter into the war). These alliances both reorganized (Italy

fought for the Allies) and expanded as more nations entered the war. Ultimately, more than 70 million militarypersonnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. More than 9

million combatants were killed, largely because of technological advancements that led to enormous increases

in the lethality of weapons without corresponding improvements in protection or mobility.

The causes of World War I can be summed up using the acronym MANIA. Read the text below and use the

organizer on the next page to describe each term of this acronym. Make sure to annotate the text as you find

information about each letter of the acronym.

In the late 1800s, in order to acquire raw materials and find new markets to sell finished

goods, various countries in Europe began competing for control of Africa and China. Because

of the limited territory in these regions, tensions increased between many major European

countries. These countries began increasing their military spending in order to train more

soldiers, create new, more effective weaponry, and in general, increase the size of their

armies, in case it became necessary to use force to maintain their control of their territory

abroad. As tensions increased, various countries formed alliances with each other across

Europe, in some cases promising to come to each others aid in case of war. These alliances

created a complex system in Europe, which ultimately led to most major powers entering WW

The spark which caused war to ignite and spread across Europe began in a region of Europe

known as the Balkans (see map below). An empire, known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire,

controlled a small country known as Bosnia. Bosnians had strong nationalistic beliefs about

their country and, because the Bosnians were similar to the Serbs in religion and language

(sort of like cousins) the Serbs agitated for independence of Bosnia from Austro-Hungary and

the right to make Bosnia part of their own country. A group of Bosnian independence fighters

from Serbia, known as the Black Hand, plotted to harm Austro-Hungary in an attempt to win

freedom for Bosnia. On June 28th, 1914, a member of the Black Hand, Gavrilo Princip,

successfully assassinated the Archduke Franz-Ferdinand, the crown prince of Austro-Hungary,

beginning a chain of events that plunged all of Europe into the First World War.
