PROVENCEgreat land of inspiration

cÉzanneKnown as the father of modern painting, Frenchpainter Paul Cézanne is one of the great postimpressionists, though his work was largely unrecognized and misunderstood during his lifetime. Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839, Cézannebriefly studied law but soon decided to paint fulltime in spite of his family’s objections. He moved toParis, where he met artist Camille Pissarro. ThroughPissarro, Cézanne began to work and exhibit withthe other impressionists, but was never fully accepted into their circle. Toward the end of his life,Cézanne returned to Aix, where he painted theProvençal landscape in near seclusion. At the timeof his death in 1906, Cézanne had finally gainedthe recognition he deserved as an artist, and hiswork went on to influence many artists.

Provence’s mountains and valleys and, ofcourse, its incomparable light have inspiredwriters and artists for centuries. This landalso is rich with Roman monuments built2,000 years ago. Everyday life here is livedbefore a backdrop of a landscape made famous in a painting or by the ruins of aRoman amphitheater. Discover for yourselfthe appeal of this storied area.

cÉzanneKnown as the father of modern painting, Frenchpainter Paul Cézanne is one of the great postimpressionists, though his work was largely unrecognized and misunderstood during his lifetime.

Discover for yourselfthe appeal of this storied area.

cÉzanneKnown as the father of modern painting, Frenchpainter Paul Cézanne is one of the great postimpressionists, though his work was largely unrecognized and misunderstood during his lifetime.
