THEATRE BY THE SEA, which ison the National Register of His-toric Places, has had many incar-nations over the years. The Tylerfamily purchased the property inthe early ‘20s. After Alice Tyler wasleft a widow with three youngchildren, she ran the property as asummer camp for girls. When thedepression hit, she decided to cre-ate jobs and provide a future forher children by turning the barninto a theatre. The 300-seat the-atre opened on August 7, 1933with a production called StrictlyDynamite. That initial seasonlasted four weeks and featuredfour different plays, one of whichwas taken to New York. In 1938, aYale Cooperative took over. Then,on September 2, a hurricane hit.The back wall of the theatre cavedin and the stage roof was blownoff. During the repairs, the theaterwas expanded to include a bal-cony. The newly enlarged theatreoperated through 1941 and then

went dark during the war. In 1946,the theatre’s most glamorous andstar-filled period began. The the-atre became what is referred to asa “star-system” house openingwith a show called Dream Girlwhich starred Judy Holliday.Other headliners who werebrought in were TallulahBankhead, Mae West, GrouchoMarx and Marlon Brando. Follow-ing the 1958 season, the propertywas sold to the Bontecou family, who leased it sporadically for sev-eral years, and by 1966 there wereplans to tear down the theatre.Upon hearing that the theatrewas to be destroyed, TommyBrent, who had previously workedas a publicist for the theatre, re-turned and saved the theaterfrom demolition. His first showopened on June 23, 1967 and heran the theatre successfully for 22years. In 1988, FourQuest Enter-tainment, which consisted ofLaura Harris, (who had previouslyworked at the theatre for 11 sum-mers), Renny Serre and RichardEricson, came on board. Followingextensive renovations, FourQuestreopened the theater in thespring of 1989 and continued pro-ducing high quality summer the-ater in Matunuck until the fall of2003. The theatre went dark onceagain until 2007, when entrepre-neur Bill Hanney purchased theproperty and, with producingpartners, successfully mounted aproduction of A Funny Thing Hap-pened on the Way to the Forum, just six weeks later, reopening thehistoric theatre on August 8, 2007.Theatre By The Sea continues toproduce a successful four-musicalsubscription season annually.
