The school has teamed up with The Hawthorns School in Bletch- ingley to secure over £4,000 in government funding to create the new facility for outdoor learning. The launch event was the culmination of a series of conservation days for parents and children of both schools. The project was the brainchild of head of science at Hillcroft, Tom Holloway. During his presentation to the guests at the launch event he said: “Although Darwin is famed for going to places like the Gala- pagos Islands, he did a lot of his experimentation and dis- covery in his own back gar- den. We want the children of Hillcroft to look upon this gar- den in a similar light, as a place of both enjoyment and education. Age is no barrier

to football fun!You might think it’s all over…but with the new sport ofWalking Football it doesn’thave to be time to hang upyour boots.Walking Football is a slow-paced version of the beauti-ful game aimed at the over50s and it is about to kick-off at Whyteleafe Commu-nity Sports Centre thisSeptember. It is designed to help peoplekeep active, as well as get-ting former players, maleand female, back on thepitch to recapture the ex-citement of competitivesport. At the same timethey will be improving car-diovascular fitness, musclestrength, joint mobility andconcentration skills. As the name suggests,Walking Football is non-con-tact and anyone whosprints, runs or jogs whilethe ball is in play will be pe-nalised with a free-kickawarded to the other team.Run in conjunction with theSurrey FA and Astrosoc-cer4u, one hour sessionswill take place every Thurs-day between 4pm and 5pm

Walking Football.

from 3rd September on the latest 3G arti-ficial surface, used by Whyteleafe FC for itsRyman League One home matches.Whyteleafe Community Sports CentreManaging Director, Clive Davis, said:“Walking Football is ideally for men andwomen aged 50+ and can be played re-gardless of physical ability and experience.“There are many older adults who lovesport, and in particular football, but feelthat they can’t participate in traditionalprogrammes due to falling health and fit-ness levels. It’s ideal for that particulargroup. Walking Football in Whyteleafe willattract a great mix of people to get to-gether for fitness and fun. And it reallydoesn’t matter if you’ve never played be-fore.”To register or to find out more about Walk-ing Football at Whyteleafe CommunitySports Centre, Church Road, Whyteleafe,CR3 0AR, ring us on 0208 660 5491 oremail [email protected].

Diary of a

Plantaholicby Sue Baines

Sue Baines

A job in time saves 99 (wellalmost!). The bugs seem tobe growing every bit as fastas the flowers at this time ofyear. The main culprits in mygarden seem to be the ants. Ialways investigate if I seethem walking up a stem, asants always have a purpose. They take black fly and care-fully place them on eachstem, or leaf, knowing thatwithin hours the black fly willhave multiplied. The black flyare then milked by the ants, causing the plant to sufferdramatically. In hot weatherthe process seems to be ex-acerbated. I often look at aplant with dark stems andwonder why it is suddenly ail-ing. I have particularly no-ticed black fly, but greenflyand Lupin aphids (that are socleverly disguised as part ofthe new flowers) will all bejust as damaging. I try andsquidge them when I seethem, but if you do use aspray, make sure it is earlymorning, or late eveningonce the bees have finished.

Ants in the ground can also bequite destructive, as they ‘siftthe soil’ drying out the plantroots. I have used ant nema-todes, and this appeared towork in the soil. It does not killthem, but encourages them tomove away from that area.Sadly it did not work in theconservatory, and I resortedto Antstop, which was moreeffective.Cutting back, watering andfeeding continues, as doestying up plants, hopefully be-fore damage occurs. Thisyear seems to have been par-ticularly windy. Wet growthcan be extremely heavy, socut any surplus growth beforea deluge, if possible.Despite the challenges, the garden is still lookinggorgeous.

New President

for ‘COGS’

On Saturday 20th June,Caterham, Oxted and God-stone Lions (‘COGS’) held afundraising Garden Party inaid of Caterham Dene Hospi-tal. During the party the clubheld its ‘handover’ ceremonywhich saw Fran Pavely, whohas been president for twoyears, hand over the reins toLesley Day.As part of handover tradi-tions, some awards werehanded out. A brick was awarded to TonyGordon for his reliability in set-ting up the monthly meetings, and a pane of glass went toJohn Quincey for always makingthings clear to all members, new and long-standing.

Welcome to all our newreaders in Godstone!

This month sees the latest increase in the circulation of

The Caterham and District Independent, this time to residents

and businesses in Caterham’s neighbouring village of God-

stone. We look forward to keeping our readers informed of

special events happening in the village and issues of local con-

cern. To welcome Godstone aboard, this month we are featur-

ing photos from the recent Centenary Celebration with Flowers

at St. Nicholas Church. The very special event, held from 3rd-

7th July, celebrated the completion of the recent works to the

spire and the 100th anniversary of the clock and re-hanging of

the bells. We also feature photos from the popular RSPCA

South Godstone Fun Day held on Sunday 12th July. The entrance to St. Nicholas Church,

pupils race for LilyPutting their resourcefulnessinto practise, WarlinghamPark School pupils raisedmoney for their ‘Charity ofthe Year’ by completing onelap of the playing field in themost original way. On Mon-day 6th July the playing fieldwas awash with childrenwearing The Lily Founda-tion’s logo colours of pink, green and purple. The In-fants set off first skipping, hopping and jumping andwere swiftly followed by theJuniors on stilts, crawling, jumping in sacks, cartwheel-ing and even pushing anempty pram!Every year, the pupils atWarlingham Park School sup-port a charity of the pupils’choice. They are encouragedto support a child-focusedcharity to help them relate tothe cause and a charity witha local focus to help themunderstand the meaning ofCommunity. This year theircharity is The Lily Founda-tion, which is committed tofinding a cure for Mitochon-drial Disease through fundingresearch, raising awarenessand providing family support. Deputy Head Teacher, MrsGravett, said: “It was a

perfect celebration to a year of raising moneyfor The Lily Foundation. We are absolutelydelighted to be able to offer the organisationour support this year.” The day’s fundraising raised £250 for The LilyFoundation through donations and the pur-chase of merchandise and refreshments.

TV chef hosts

‘Ready Steady

Cook’ session

at OasisOn Wednesday 15th July TVChef Paul Rankin spent allday sharing his knowledge, expertise and some tastyrecipes with the studentsand staff at Oasis AcademyCoulsdon. The chef of ‘Ready SteadyCook’ fame hosted a versionof the competition with Year7 students, creating a tan-talisingly tasty stuffed pep-per and ratatouille from theingredients chosen by FoodTechnology Teacher MrsBuckingham, which stu-dents then spent the rest ofthe lessons copying andperfecting with Paul’s help.Mrs Buckingham said: “Weare very fortunate that ChefRankin gave up his time tojoin us for the day and pro-vided this amazing experi-ence for our students tolearn from, and work along-side of him.“Many of them recognisedwho Paul was when theywere told he would be visit-ing, and were really excited

to welcome him to the Academy”. Whilst in the Academy, Paul also workedwith the kitchen team to inspire sometasty dishes for students to try at theirbreak times, including confit chicken legand dauphinoise potatoes. Kitchen Manager, John Roper, said: “Stu-dents had the chance to sample the foodof a Michelin starred chef, which is agreat opportunity to be able to give tothem. It was great to hear him talkingto the students about the importance ofhealthy eating and how easy it is to makesimple, wholesome ingredients come tolife and be full of flavour and excitement.Students were really interested to hearwhat he had to say and I hope we havegone some way to inspire the next gen-eration of budding chefs”.

Paul Rankin demonstrates some culinaryskills to the enthusiastic Oasis Academystudents.

Steakhouse -

Now at BambinosOn Friday and Saturdayevenings and all day Sundays, the popular ‘Caffe Bambino’ inCroydon Road, Caterham nowtransforms into Caterham’s onlyArgentine steakhouse! Majid, the owner of Caffe Bam-bino, has brought in César, whoused to own La Braza Latina inSouth Croydon, to manage thesteakhouse and César’s delight-ful daughter Nathaly is the chef.Together, they make a superbteam producing authentic Ar-gentinian cuisine and a greatservice. My partner Roger and I visitedon a Friday evening, lookingforward to seeing how the fa-miliar cafe venue worked as asteakhouse at night. Anyonefamiliar with Majid’s legendaryhospitality will not be surprisedto know that it worked very welland we immediately felt happy, relaxed and ready for a greatevening. We were recommended thePinca la Colonia Malbec red winefrom the ‘small but well chosen’

wine list, a lovely, smooth winewith a sweet and spicy aroma(£17.95). I chose the Empanadas (Pat-ties) for my starter and Rogerchose the Ribs. My vegetarianpattes were made with Quornmince, chopped olives, egg, raisins and spring onions andwere very tasty. Roger said thespecial sauce on his Ribs had“quite a spicy kick” and werenice and meaty. Nathaly saidthe sauce is called ‘ChimmiChurri’, made to their own spe-cial recipe. I had a large portion of one ofthe starters for my main course, the lovely cheesy ‘AubergineMendosa’ but there was also theoption of the ‘Crespolini’ (home-made crepes) on the maincourse choices, which I look for-ward to trying another time. There were also chicken andseabass/salmon options on themenu for those not wantingsteak. The Chargrilled Specialities of-fers a Mixed Grill for two people,a Fillet Steak Burger, a butterflycut Churrasco steak and Filletsteak, which had the option of300g for £19.95 or 400g for£25.50. The photo shows the400g Fillet steak that Rogerhad, which represents greatvalue compared with steak-houses elsewhere, especially asthe vegetables, including fries, are included in the price.

All the food was freshly cookedby Nathaly and was superb.Like other diners in the restau-rant, Roger and I will definitelybe returning customers! Seebelow for steakhouse openingtimes.
