Protocol for exchange of technical data for shipping community

™™

Working together

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™ is an international protocol developed to standardize electronic exchange of the technical data among shipping industry. The scope of this standard protocol is to rationalize the proliferation of technical information, currently supplied in various formats. The ShipdexTM protocol is born from the co-operation of two Ship Owner company Grimaldi Group Naples and Intership Navigation Co Ltd.

™™

• Strict requirements by authorities and legislation (ISM, TMSA, Marpol, ISPS,...)

• Quality requirements from customers• Environmental requirements• Absolute need for top efficient operations

(profitability)• Use of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems to

manage the fleet

Where does it lead?

Today’s scenario

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

Huge amount of data to register and manage

What does it practically mean in aspect of computerised maintenance, purchasing and Quality management

systems...

Today’s scenario

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™™

...ship owner’s nightmare!

• 80-100 different makers for one vessel• 700-900 different components per vessel• up 1.000 different parts in one component• up to 33.000 different general stores• 2-4 month of manual data inputting for each

new vessel• Poor quality of data and even wrong data

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™™

From “Frustration” to “The idea”

• Grimaldi and Intership – ship-owners which control close to 200 vessels got frustrated (from doing again and again for every new building the same avoidable work)

Let’s help ourselves!• Let’s speak with our Key Suppliers to jointly develop a

standard to make everybody’s life easier!• We want to make use of up-to-date technology

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™™

The standard – how to?What are the authorities saying?• Solas Chapt. 12 only mentions - ships have to be equipped with

certain manuals• IMO - GBS (goal based standards) project - better and standardized

manuals (like in the aerospace industry?)– MSC.1/Circ.1253 - Shipboard technical operating and maintenance

manuals IMO GBO MSC 1 Circ 1253 26-10-2007

Worth to notice!

• Shipping is slowly adopting aerospace-like standards (e.g. IMO English vocabulary, GMDSS, a VDR, AIS and VTS areas)

Why an aviation standard for technical data shall not be tailored and reused in shipping? So…

Fundamentals• We want to achieve a win-win situation for

everybody• We want to develop an open standard for all• We want this standard to be expandable in the

future• Initial scope

– Equipment list– Maintenance procedures– Parts catalogue

• Adhere to already existing industry standards

Shipdex™ Protocol

• Exchange of data related to the information currently supplied in the form of Technical Manuals

• Data exchange in a neutral and standardized format; platform and software independent

• Documentation (www.shipdex.com)– Shipdex ™ – Introduction to the protocol (free)– Shipdex ™ – Business Rules (registration required; fee)– Shipdex ™ – Writing Rules (registration required; fee)

Shipdex™ - Main features 1

• Shipdex Protocol makes reference to the “ASD S1000D International specification for technical publications utilising a Common Source Data Base”

• Information produced in accordance with Shipdex Protocol are collected in XML macro-elements (true small data bases) called Data Modules (DM)

• DM is defined as a “self contained unit of information” (e.g. all the information related to a maintenance task are collected in a single, re-usable, well structured XML DM)

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™™

Shipdex™ - Main features 2

• Each DM is structured in accordance with the relevant XML Schema:– Descriptive (for descriptive and operational information)– Procedural (for maintenance tasks description)– IPD (for Illustrated Parts catalogues)

• Each DM contains data supplied in XML format and can refer external “information objects”, e.g. other DMs, other documents (in Word, PDF, etc. format), illustrations, multimedia objects

• DM presentation layout is automatically generated applying style sheets for displaying on screen and for printing

Data Quality Manufacturer responsibility

Data Quality Customer and Solution Provider responsibility

™™

Expected benefits – Ship Owners• Receive well structured quality data

– Avoid retyping of manufacturers data – easy deployment of PMS for new vessels

– Same format and structure for all technical data supplied by different manufacturers

– Possibility to check/validate data sets - data accuracy– Correct and up-to-date maintenance procedures

Suppliers are NOT responsible for onsite implementation/deployment!

– Order right spare parts in right time• Finally a standard available for new building

contracts

™™

Expected benefits

Manufacturers• Possible data reusability• Better service to the customer• Improved data in RFQ/PO from customers• Increased sales

Software companies• Deliver industry standard solutions• Competitive advantage• Increased sales

06 February 2008 Digital Ship Cyprus 2008

™™

Shipdex™ - The future

• Possibility to share the “equipment installation information” (ship configuration, e.g. IMO/SFI/PN/SN)

• Possibility to exchange field data to improve the service (various readings as reported during maintenance)

• Possibility to supply Shipdex Service Letter/Service Bulletin to ship-owners on the basis of received “equipment installation information”

• Possibility to automatically process technical changes received as Shipdex Service Letter/Service Bulletin from manufacturers
