All companies must conduct an induction to new personnel The company induction will vary from company to company. The company induction is a mandatory requirement. Company Induction

The form and layout of the induction will depend upon the company's activities and location of work.

Induction will be conducted for all trades in the coatings industry and activities including:

Company Induction

Every company will have their own method of conducting an induction.

• When conducting company induction, oral and written tests may be required.

• Medical and surveillance forms can also be completed.

• Medicals and drug and alcohol testing may also be conducted.

• Videos and general presentations can be used as part of the induction - as long as you

get the message over.

Tests and quizzes may be used to ensure personnel understand the briefings and induction etc.

The following is an example of a typical induction program:

• Variations will exist depending upon the company.• The paint and corrosion control industry is extensive and large variations will be found in

the different organisations.• One thing will be common to all:

New personnel should receive sufficient training before conducting any tasks and must bebriefed on the Health and Safety procedures to be adopted by the particular organisation.

Health and Safety Overview

This section should give an overview of the Health and Safety Regulations which affect thecompany.

• Regulations.

• Legislative.

• Codes of practices.

• Important issues to the specific organisation.

These items should be common to most organisations, however there will differences within differentcountries around the globe.

Company Safety Management System

This section should outline the safety organisation, Health and Safety policies and responsibilities ofpersonnel within the company.

This is an important issue and employees should fully understand the safety management systemand culture of the company.

Companies will have their own quality management system in place and how this is worked andaudited.

Details of specific Standards may be discussed such as ISO 9001 and ISO 18001. Someorganisations integrate two or three standards into one management system which may also includeISO 14001.

Safety Awareness

A general overview on safety awareness should be conducted relating to the following:

Site Safety Guidelines

A review of the general site safety guidelines.

This section will be adapted depending upon the type of site and location.

• PPE and RPE requirements for the site.

• Training requirements for the site.

• Specific site inductions which may be customer conducted or delivered.

• General company procedures if applicable for the site.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health ( COSHH )

A thorough outline of the COSHH regulations and implications should be given.

A review of the COSHH document and COSHH assessments should be covered.

An understanding of the way COSHH assessments are conducted within the company should alsobe covered.

All employees should be aware of the COSHH regulations.

There may be similar regulations outside Europe, however the the overall assessment process willbe similar.

Noise at Work Act

The noise at work act requires companies to carry out assessments for all areas where noise isproduced.

This section of an induction should outline the noise levels for different tasks and requirement forPPE and RPE.

The types of equipment should be discussed and demonstrated as necessary.

Examples of noise levels and controls should be given specific to the tasks or working environment.

Details of Company noise monitoring may also be discussed.

Driving Regulations

The company should outline it's rules and company regulations on driving which could include:

• The types of vehicles used.

• The licence and age requirement of personnel allowed to drive company vehicles.

• The company training requirement or qualifications on driving.

• Any specific information relating with company driving and general regulations.

Vehicles include road transport, fork trucks, wagons etc.

Environmental Issues

Regulations exist for the duty of care for companies to minimise solvents and dust emissions intothe atmosphere.

The company should outline the procedures on solvent, dust emissions and waste disposal.

Specific procedures and standards may be discussed along with company policy.

Details of ISO 14001 or other standards may be discussed also.

Manual Handling

The company should outline the basic procedures for manual handling.

Procedures could include:

• How to lift.

• Company guidelines on lifting and responsibility of the employee.

All manual workers should have to attend a manual handling course.

Accident and Incident Reporting

• Accident reporting is essential to a company and procedures will be available.

• A review of these procedures should be conducted.

• A review of 'near-misses' should also be conducted.

• A full outline on the role of the employee in the event of a near-miss should be outlined.

Investigation procedures may also be addressed in the induction.

First Aid

• Details of first aid and aiders within the company should be given.• First aid posts and training requirements should be discussed.

• Roles and responsibilities of first aiders and personnel should be discussed.

The first aid course will not be covered as this is conduced by specialist external organisations.

Emergency Muster Points

• If the company has a fixed location or specific site, there will be muster points.

• In the event of an emergency, or alarm all personnel shall go to the muster point.

• The exact procedure for emergencies and use of muster points should be outlined.

• The customer or client will have their own site muster points which must also be detailed.

Site inductions will detail the specific muster points on that site, platform etc.

• It may not always be practical to conduct full induction.• Some organisations allow a 'one-to-one' (interim) for new employees until the next full

induction is conducted.

• This 'one-to-one' may restrict the employee to limited work scope until the full induction is

conducted.

Company Instructions

The company will have a list of safety instructions available.

A review of these instructions may be conducted, or a review of specific instructions to meet specifictasks.

Examples of instructions for painters and coating operatives could include:

• Paint mixing.

• Paint application.• Working with compressed air.

• Working in confined space working.

• Working with lead and other hazardous pigments and chemicals.

• The various types of surface preparation.

• Working on scaffold and access etc.
